On the electrostatic field created at ground level by a halo
We investigate the effect of halo activity on the electrostatic field measured at ground level. We use electrostatic arguments as well as self-consistent simulations to show that, due to the screening charge in the ionosphere, the distant electrostatic field created by the uncompensated charge in a thundercloud decays exponentially rather than as the third power of the distance. Furthermore, significative ionization around the lower edge of the ionosphere slightly reduces the electrostatic field at ground level. We conclude that halos do not extend the range of detectability of lightning-induced electrostatic fields. This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, MINECO under projects ESP2013-48032-C5-5-R, FIS2014-61774-EXP, and ESP2015-69909-C5-2-R and by the EU through the FEDER program. Micro-computed tomography and histology to explore internal morphology in decapod larvae
Traditionally, the internal morphology of crustacean larvae has been studied using destructive
techniques such as dissection and microscopy. The present study combines advances in microcomputed
tomography (micro-CT) and histology to study the internal morphology of decapod larvae,
using the common spider crab (Maja brachydactyla Balss, 1922) as a model and resolving the individual
limitations of these techniques. The synergy of micro-CT and histology allows the organs to be easily
identified, revealing simultaneously the gross morphology (shape, size, and location) and histological
organization (tissue arrangement and cell identification). Micro-CT shows mainly the exoskeleton,
musculature, digestive and nervous systems, and secondarily the circulatory and respiratory systems,
while histology distinguishes several cell types and confirms the organ identity. Micro-CT resolves a
discrepancy in the literature regarding the nervous system of crab larvae. The major changes occur in
the metamorphosis to the megalopa stage, specifically the formation of the gastric mill, the shortening
of the abdominal nerve cord, the curving of the abdomen beneath the cephalothorax, and the
development of functional pereiopods, pleopods, and lamellate gills. The combination of micro-CT and
histology provides better results than either one alone.Financial support was provided by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness through the INIA

Optically perceptible characteristics of sprites observed in Central Europe in 2007â2009
Sprites are luminous optical emissions accompanying electric discharges in the mesosphere. 489 sprite events have been observed with a TV frame rate video system in Central Europe from Sopron (47.68 °N, 16.58 °E, ~230m MSL), Hungary between 2007 and 2009. Characteristic sprite forms, i.e. column, wishbone, tree, angel, and carrot have been identified in the set of records. Characteristic morphological properties corresponding to each type are given; earlier definitions and observations as well as the related theoretical considerations are reviewed. Based on the knowledge and experience from high-speed imaging in sprite observations, probable time sequences of streamer propagation directions were associated with the characteristic sprite types. It is suggested that different streamer propagation sequences corresponding to different dynamic processes may result in similar sprite forms. Several occasionally detectable sprite features are noted and described: tendrils, glows, puffs, beads, and spots. Spots are distinguished from the similar beads by their characteristic brightness, size, and location relative to the bright body of the sprite. The events observed in Central Europe have been classified by the number of individual sprites and by the variety of types appearing in them. More than 90% of the recorded sprites were found to occur in clusters rather than alone, and more than half of the sprite clusters contained more than one sprite types. Jellyfish and dancing sprite events are described as being special subsets of sprite clusters. Statistical analysis of the occurrences of morphological types, various sprite features, and event durations indicated that jellyfish sprites and clusters of column sprites with glows and tendrils do not tend to have long optical lifetimes. Sprite events with more morphological types, on the other hand, more likely have extended durations. The maximum of the encountered event duration was lower for events with many sprite elements. Observed rates of glows and puffs may refer to the occupied height range of sprites. The importance of understanding the driving factors behind the development of various sprite types and sprite features is emphasized and some topics are suggested for further investigation

The James Webb Space Telescope Mission
Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies,
expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling
for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least .
With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000
people realized that vision as the James Webb Space Telescope. A
generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of
the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the
scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000
team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image
quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief
history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing
program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. We cite
detailed reports on the design and the measured performance on orbit.Comment: Accepted by PASP for the special issue on The James Webb Space
