Lithium-6 : Evolution from Big Bang to Present
The primordial abundances of Deuterium, he4, and li7 are crucial to
determination of the baryon density of the Universe in the framework of
standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). li6 which is only produced in tiny
quantities and it is generally not considered to be a cosmological probe.
However, recent major observational advances have produced an estimate of the
li6/li7 ratio in a few very old stars in the galactic halo which impacts the
question whether or not the lithium isotopes are depleted in the outer layers
of halo stars, through proton induced reactions at the base of (or below) the
convective zone. li6 is a pure product of spallation through the major
production reactions, fast oxygen and alphas interacting on interstellar H, He
(especially in the early Galaxy). The rapid nuclei are both synthesized and
accelerated by SN II. In this context, the \li6 evolution should go in step
with that of beryllium and boron, recently observed by the Keck and HST
telescopes. Li6 adds a new constraint on the early spallation in the Galaxy. In
particular, if confirmed, the Li6/Be9 ratio observed in two halo stars (HD
84937, BD +263578) gives strong boundary conditions on the composition and the
spectrum of the rapid particles involved. We show that Li6 is essentially
intact in halo stars, and a fortiori \li7. We can define a range of the Li6
abundance in the very early Galaxy consistent with Big Bang nucleosynthesis
(5.6 10(-14) to 3. 10(-13) . Following the evolution at increasing metallicity,

A review of the processes and effects of droughts and summer floods in rivers and threats due to climate change on current adaptive strategies
Europe is expected to experience a greater frequency of floods and droughts as precipitation and evapotranspiration patterns are modified by climate change in future. Several large scale drought and flooding events have occurred in Europe since 2000. Studies of drought are rare but indicate important impacts on freshwater habitats, water quality, plants and animals, which may have wider consequences for ecosystem functioning. The main factors determining the impacts of droughts and floods are event duration and seasonality of the event. A diverse habitat distribution and the presence of refugia at the reach scale confer the most resilience against droughts and floods. Management measures will also be impacted particularly with regard to riparian zones, channel morphology, flow and floodplain connectivity. However there is a conflict between management actions that target the effects of drought, and those that target floods.
This report reviews information on droughts and aseasonal floods (summer floods) published since 2000 with a principal focus on small lowland rivers. Using several recent (post 2000) reviews on these topics, we describe abiotic and biotic effects of droughts and floods, providing recent European examples where possible. We explain the current status of droughts and summer floods in Europe, and where the main sources of data can be found. We highlight the threats posed by these phenomena to some of the most common current adaptive management strategies in place in the EU. To this end we use measures already described within REFRESH under Deliverables 1.1 and 1.2, and we focused solely on adaptive measures relating to riparian zones, channel morphology, flow and floodplain connectivity

Do tests devised to detect recent HIV-1 infection provide reliable estimates of incidence in Africa?
International audienceThe objective of this study was to assess the performance of 4 biologic tests designed to detect recent HIV-1 infections in estimating incidence in West Africa (BED, Vironostika, Avidity, and IDE-V3). These tests were assessed on a panel of 135 samples from 79 HIV-1-positive regular blood donors from Abidjan, C?d'Ivoire, whose date of seroconversion was known (Agence Nationale de Recherches sur le SIDA et les H?tites Virales 1220 cohort). The 135 samples included 26 from recently infected patients (180 days), and 15 from patients with clinical AIDS. The performance of each assay in estimating HIV incidence was assessed through simulations. The modified commercial assays gave the best results for sensitivity (100% for both), and the IDE-V3 technique gave the best result for specificity (96.3%). In a context like Abidjan, with a 10% HIV-1 prevalence associated with a 1% annual incidence, the estimated test-specific annual incidence rates would be 1.2% (IDE-V3), 5.5% (Vironostika), 6.2% (BED), and 11.2% (Avidity). Most of the specimens falsely classified as incident cases were from patients infected for >180 days but <1 year. The authors conclude that none of the 4 methods could currently be used to estimate HIV-1 incidence routinely in C?d'Ivoire but that further adaptations might enhance their accuracy
Sources of dissolved inorganic carbon to the Canada Basin halocline : a multitracer study

Hydrographic and geochemical samples were collected in the upper 500 m of the southwestern Canada Basin water column in the summer of 2008 and fall of 2009. These observations were used to identify conservative and nonconservative processes that contribute dissolved inorganic carbon to halocline source waters, including shelf sediment organic matter remineralization, air-sea gas exchange, and sea-ice brine export. Our results indicate that the remineralization of organic matter that occurs along the Bering and Chukchi Sea shelves is the overwhelming contributor of dissolved inorganic carbon to Pacific Winter Water that occupies the middle halocline in the southwestern Canada Basin. Nonconservative contributions from air-sea exchange and sea-ice brine are not significant. The broad salinity range associated with the DIC maximum, compared to the narrow salinity range of the nutrient maximum, is due to mixing between Pacific and Atlantic water and not abiotic addition of DIC.NSERC;

MERS-CoV at the animal–human interface: inputs on exposure pathways from an expert-opinion elicitation
Nearly 4 years after the first report of the emergence of Middle-East respiratory syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) and nearly 1800 human cases later, the ecology of MERS-CoV, its epidemiology, and more than risk factors of MERS-CoV transmission between camels are poorly understood. Knowledge about the pathways and mechanisms of transmission from animals to humans is limited; as of yet, transmission risks have not been quantified. Moreover the divergent sanitary situations and exposures to animals among populations in the Arabian Peninsula, where human primary cases appear to dominate, vs. other regions in the Middle East and Africa, with no reported human clinical cases and where the virus has been detected only in dromedaries, represents huge scientific and health challenges. Here, we have used expert-opinion elicitation in order to obtain ideas on relative importance of MERS-CoV risk factors and estimates of transmission risks from various types of contact between humans and dromedaries. Fourteen experts with diverse and extensive experience in MERS-CoV relevant fields were enrolled and completed an online questionnaire that examined pathways based on several scenarios, e.g., camels-camels, camels-human, bats/other species to camels/humans, and the role of diverse biological substances (milk, urine, etc.) and potential fomites. Experts believed that dromedary camels play the largest role in MERS-CoV infection of other dromedaries; however, they also indicated a significant influence of the season (i.e. calving or weaning periods) on transmission risk. All experts thought that MERS-CoV-infected dromedaries and asymptomatic humans play the most important role in infection of humans, with bats and other species presenting a possible, but yet undefined, risk. Direct and indirect contact of humans with dromedary camels were identified as the most risky types of contact, when compared to consumption of various camel products, with estimated 'most likely' incidence risks of at least 22 and 13% for direct and indirect contact, respectively. The results of our study are consistent with available, yet very limited, published data regarding the potential pathways of transmission of MERS-CoV at the animal-human interface. These results identify key knowledge gaps and highlight the need for more comprehensive, yet focused research to be conducted to better understand transmission between dromedaries and humans.published_or_final_versio

Clinical and Parasite Species Risk Factors for Pentavalent Antimonial Treatment Failure in Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Peru
Background. Treatment for cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) with standard pentavalent antimonial therapy is hampered by cumbersome administration, toxicity, and potential failure. Knowledge of factors influencing treatment outcome is essential for successful management. Methods. A case-control study of incident cases was performed with patients experiencing their first CL episode. The standard treatment for CL for these patients was 20 mg/kg/day of sodium stibogluconate for 20 days. Clinical and epidemiological data were recorded, and parasite isolates were species typed. Patients were followed up for 6 months to assess treatment outcome. Clinical cure was defined as complete wound closure and re-epithelization without inflammation or infiltration; new lesions, wound reopening, or signs of activity were classified as treatment failure. Descriptive, bivariate, and logistic regression analyses were performed. Results. One hundred twenty-seven patients were recruited; 63 (49.6%) were infected with Leishmania (Viannia) peruviana, 29 (22.8%) were infected with Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis, 27 (21.3%) were infected with Leishmania (Viannia) guyanensis, and 8 (6.3%) were infected with other species. Only patients infected with the 3 most common species were selected for risk-factor analysis (n=119). Final failure rate at 6 months was 24.4% (95% confidence interval [CI], 16.5%-32.1%), with 96% of failures occurring within the first 3 months of follow-up assessment. Risk factors for treatment failure identified in the final multivariate model were age (per year, odds ratio [OR], 0.95; 95% CI, 0.92-0.99; P=.017), stay of <72 months in area of disease acquisition (OR, 30.45; 95% CI, 2.38-389.25; P=.009), duration of disease <5 weeks (OR, 4.39; 95% CI, 1.12-17.23; P=.034), additional lesion (per lesion, OR, 2.06; 95% CI, 1.3-3.28; P=.002), infection with L. (V.) peruviana (OR, 9.85; 95% CI, 1.01-95.65; P=.049), and infection with L. (V.) braziliensis (OR, 22.36; 95% CI, 1.89-263.96; P=.014). Conclusions. Soft Gamma-ray Detector for the ASTRO-H Mission
ASTRO-H is the next generation JAXA X-ray satellite, intended to carry
instruments with broad energy coverage and exquisite energy resolution. The
Soft Gamma-ray Detector (SGD) is one of ASTRO-H instruments and will feature
wide energy band (40-600 keV) at a background level 10 times better than the
current instruments on orbit. SGD is complimentary to ASTRO-H's Hard X-ray
Imager covering the energy range of 5-80 keV. The SGD achieves low background
by combining a Compton camera scheme with a narrow field-of-view active shield
where Compton kinematics is utilized to reject backgrounds. The Compton camera
in the SGD is realized as a hybrid semiconductor detector system which consists
of silicon and CdTe (cadmium telluride) sensors. Good energy resolution is
afforded by semiconductor sensors, and it results in good background rejection
capability due to better constraints on Compton kinematics. Utilization of
Compton kinematics also makes the SGD sensitive to the gamma-ray polarization,
opening up a new window to study properties of gamma-ray emission processes.
The ASTRO-H mission is approved by ISAS/JAXA to proceed to a detailed design
phase with an expected launch in 2014. In this paper, we present science
drivers and concept of the SGD instrument followed by detailed description of
