Spirituality for EAPI: Forming Pastoral Servants with Discerning Hearts

This paper articulates how the East Asian Pastoral Institute (EAPI) understands and seeks to foster spirituality. The ideas expressed here are the author’s attempt to convey his own understanding of what good spiritualityis and of how EAPI can foster it among its participants. After an introduction about the relevance of spirituality for the formation of pastoral workers, a general definition of spirituality is given. This is followed by a reflection on how some key elements typical of the Asia Pacific context can and should affect our spirituality. The central idea explored in the rest of the paper is that of spiritual maturity. This notion is defined and explained by means of a model which articulates how spiritual growth happens in stages. The author then suggests concrete characteristics proper of the spiritually mature person and gives ideas on how the EAPI formative context can help participants develop these aspects of maturity. Finally, it is argued that discernment can be seen as the central characteristic which makes it possible for pastoral workers to truly become servants of God’s Kingdom in today’s word

Time series analysis for minority game simulations of financial markets

The minority game (MG) model introduced recently provides promising insights into the understanding of the evolution of prices, indices and rates in the financial markets. In this paper we perform a time series analysis of the model employing tools from statistics, dynamical systems theory and stochastic processes. Using benchmark systems and a financial index for comparison, several conclusions are obtained about the generating mechanism for this kind of evolut ion. The motion is deterministic, driven by occasional random external perturbation. When the interval between two successive perturbations is sufficiently large, one can find low dimensional chaos in this regime. However, the full motion of the MG model is found to be similar to that of the first differences of the SP500 index: stochastic, nonlinear and (unit root) stationary.Comment: LaTeX 2e (elsart), 17 pages, 3 EPS figures and 2 tables, accepted for publication in Physica

Hallazgos tomográficos y diagnóstico histológico en pacientes con tumores rinossinusales atendidos en el servicio de ORL del Hospital Escuela Antonio Lenin Fonseca Martínez de Septiembre 2013 a Octubre 2014

El presente trabajo se realizó en el Hospital Antonio Lenin Fonseca Durante el periodo de septiembre 2013 a octubre 2014. Se trata de un estudio descriptivo de morbi-mortalidad para conocer los hallazgos radiológicos y determinar la concordancia con el diagnostico histopatológico en pacientes con tumores rinosinosales atendidos en el servicio de orl. La muestra se constituyó de los pacientes del universo que cumplían con los criterios de inclusión. Estuvo conformada por un total de 66 casos. Lo recolectado en la ficha de datos se procesó en una base de datos y se plasmaron los resultados en cuadros y gráficos en frecuencias absolutas y relativas. Se encontró que los casos se presentaban en mayor proporción en pacientes masculinos, de edad avanzada de procedencia urbana. El seno paranasales más afectado fue el etmoidal (66.66%).Seguido del seno maxilar (65.15%). El tumor benigno con amplia mayoría tanto en el diagnostico radiológico como histopatológico fue el papiloma invertido (27%). Le continúo el angiofibroma juvenil (18%). El tumor maligno con amplia mayoría tanto en el diagnostico radiológico como histopatológico fue el Linfoma (13.63%). Seguido del carcinoma nasosinusal (9%). El sitio de extensión más frecuente fue la órbita (25%).le continuo la fosa pterigopalatina (18%). Los hallazgos radiológicos que más prevalecieron fue la remodelación ósea (53%) seguido de la reacción periostica (33%) las calcificaciones con un (22%). La densidad mixta prevaleció con (50%). La coincidencia del diagnóstico radiológico según el histopatológico fue mayor del (82%

Parental Acceptance, Parental Stress, and Quality of Life: A study with parents of ADHD children

Adapting to a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) represents a great challenge for any family, and especially for the parents. Considering the psychological and behavioral issues inherent to this disorder, it’s no easy task to promote the child’s development, in a supportive way, while at the same time ensuring that it is well adjusted to all social contexts. More difficult yet is to achieve this while maintaining high quality of interpersonal relations and psychological health in the family. In this context, our research’s objectives were to assess and analyze possible connections between the perception of parental acceptance and rejection, parental stress and quality of family life, in families with children with ADHD. To achieve our goals we applied the Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire (PARQ, Rohner, 2005), the Quality of Life Scale (QOL, Barnes & Olson, 1982), and the Parental Stress Scale (PSS, Mixão, Leal & Maroco, 2007) to a sample of 57 Portuguese parents, both fathers and mothers, of, at least, one child diagnosed with ADHD. Our results show that parents of children with ADHD perceive themselves as accepting of their children, and the majority present low levels of parental stress. Also, we found that the more stressed parents feel about parenting, the less accepting they perceive themselves to be, as well as having lower levels of quality of life. These results leave interesting pointers for future research andintervention, suggesting the importance of helping parents of ADHD children to deal with stress as it seems to have an important role on key dimensions of family functioning and consequently on children’s socio-emotional adjustment and development

La posibilidad de mejorar la tolerancia de los cultivos al estrés salino ha sido objeto de investigación en los últimos 30 años pero son escasos los ejemplos donde una variedad mejorada haya sido empleada para la producción económica en ambientes salinos. Probablemente esto podría deberse al desconocimiento de los factores que proporcionan resistencia, y a la ausencia de un cálculo económico del rendimiento esperado en los genotipos mejorados (Blum, 1988) Considerando la gran variabilidad que presentan los suelos salinos, algunos investigadores indican que la mejor forma de mejorar la producción en ambientes salinos es elevando el potencial de producción y no mejorando la resistencia a salinidad (Richards, 1983). Esta conclusión se basa en el hecho de que la mayor proporción de producción en suelos salinos procede de las partes menos afectadas por salinidad.
