Research Areas: Immunology ; Research & Experimental MedicineThe recent emergence of a new myxoma virus capable of causing disease in the Iberian hare (Lepus granatensis) has resulted in numerous outbreaks with high mortality leading to the reduction, or even the disappearance, of many local populations of this wild species in the Iberian Peninsula. Currently, the available vaccines that prevent myxomatosis in domestic rabbits caused by classic strains of myxoma virus have not been assessed for use in Iberian hares. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of commercial rabbit vaccines in Iberian hares and wild rabbits against the natural recombinant myxoma virus (ha-MYXV), bearing in mind its application in specific scenarios where capture is possible, such as genetic reserves. The study used a limited number of animals (pilot study), 15 Iberian hares and 10 wild rabbits. Hares were vaccinated with Mixohipra-FSA vaccine (Hipra) and Mixohipra-H vaccine (Hipra) using two different doses, and rabbits were vaccinated with the Mixohipra-H vaccine or the Nobivac Myxo-RHD PLUS (MSD Animal Health) using the recommended doses for domestic rabbits. After the vaccination trials, the animals were challenged with a wild type strain of ha-MYXV. The results showed that no protection to ha-MYXV challenge was afforded when a commercial dose of Mixohipra-FSA or Mixohipra-H vaccine was used in hares. However, the application of a higher dose of Mixohipra-FSA vaccine may induce protection and could possibly be used to counteract the accelerated decrease of wild hare populations due to ha-MYXV emergence. The two commercial vaccines (Mixohipra-H and Nobivac Myxo-RHD PLUS) tested in wild rabbits were fully protective against ha-MYXV infection. This knowledge gives more insights into ha-MYXV management in hares and rabbits and emphasises the importance of developing a vaccine capable of protecting wild populations of Iberian hare and wild rabbit towards MYXV and ha-MYXV strainsinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

23 páginas, 2 figuras.[EN] This paper presents a revision of 819 herbarium collections of Gasteromycetes from Costa Rica. One hundred and three taxa were identified, two of them are new records for America: Cyathus africanus and Morganella compacta; and 44 are new to Costa Rica: Bovista aestivalis, B. cunninghamii, B. dermoxantha, B. dominicensis, B. longispora, Calostoma lutescens, C. ravenelii, Calvatia candida, C. excipuliformis, Chlamydopus meyenianus, Crucibulum laeve, Cyathus earlei, C. berkeleyanus, C. helenae, C. julietae, C. limbatus, C. montagnei, C. nova-zealandiae, C. pallidus, C. poeppigii, C. setosus, Geastrum badium, G. fimbriatum, G. fimbriatum var. pseudohieronimii var. nov., G. javanicum, G. lageniforme, G. minimum, G. rufescens, G. smardae, G. striatum, Langermannia bicolor, L. gigantea, Lycogalopsis solmsii, Lycoperdon echinatum, L. eximium, L. juruense, Phallogaster saccatus, Scleroderma bovista, S. cepa, S. verrucosum, Vascellum endotephrum, V. floridanum,V. pratense and V. texense. Five genera are new to Costa Rica: Chlamydopus, Langermannia, Lycogalopsis, Phallogaster and Vascellum. Comments related with their taxonomy, ecology and distribution are also included. Based on the results, we conclude that the Gasteromycetes flora of Costa Rica is one of the richest in America, if we take into account the small area of the country. Richness may be due to more intensive sampling than in other neotropical countries, as well as to a range of altitudes from sea level to 3820 m.[ES] Este trabajo presenta una revisión taxonómica de 819 colecciones de herbario pertenecientes a Gasteromycetes de Costa Rica.

Geastrum pleosporus sp. nov., a new species of Geastraceae identified by morphological and molecular phylogenetic data

    Get PDF
[EN] An unusual species of Geastrum was found growing on decayed wood debris and leaves of Triplochiton scleroxylon in the Mbalmayo Forest Reserve, Cameroon. The species morphologically resembles G. saccatum and G. fimbriatum in having sessile endosperidium partly enclosed by the saccate base of the exoperidium. Microscopically, it is characterized by and distinguished from all other known species of the genus, in having subsmooth, punctate to moderately verruculose, slightly thick- to distinctly thick-walled polymorphous, constricted to eight-shaped, mostly oblong, ovoid, cylindrical, elliptic to clubshaped basidiospores. G. pleosporus was studied from a collection of about fifteen basidiomata covering different stages of development. It is described as new based on morphological analyses and phylogenetic inferences made from large ribosomal DNA sequence alignments. Phylogenetic relationship of G. pleosporus is investigated. In parsimony analyses of partial sequences of the large subunit rDNA from selected Gasteromycetes species, G. pleosporus is closely related to G. saccatum within the strongly supported clade of Geastrum species. The cluster of G. pleosporus and G. saccatum is well supported in parsimony analysis of the dataset with Geastrum species and related taxa using parsimony and maximum likelihood analysis.Peer reviewe

Calvatia oblongispora sp. nov. from Brazil, with close affinities to C. sporocristata from Costa Rica

    Get PDF
A new species of Calvatia from Manaus in Amazonas State, Brazil, is proposed, which is very close to Calvatia sporocristata, recently described from Costa Rica. The two species have been compared macroscopically and examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. The proposed new species, C. oblongispora, possesses a distinctly two-layered exoperidium consisting of a hyphal outer layer and an inner pseudoparenchymatous layer. This contrasts to the single pseudoparenchymatous exoperidium possessed by C. sporocristata. A table comparing the main exoperidial, basidiospore, and capillitial differences between both species is provided.Peer reviewe

[EN]DNA sequencing techniques confirm the identity between Zelleromyces hispanicus and Lactarius aurantiacus. The similarity of macroscopic, microscopic and ecological characters, suggests that the first may be the gasteroid phase of the second.[ES]Se confirma en este trabajo, mediante técnicas de biología molecular, la identidad taxonómica entre Zelleromyces hispanicus y Lactarius aurantiacus. Teniendo en cuenta, además, la similitud de caracteres macroscópicos, microscópicos y ecológicos, es muy posible que el primero sea la fase gasteroide del segundo.Peer reviewe
