Theoretical framework: The knowledge on spirituality in Nursing has increased in Portugal, but there is still low evidence on the nurses’ perception of this dimension of care, as well as limited instruments in portuguese which allow measuring related phenomena. The Spirituality and Spiritual Care Rating Scale (SSCRS) allows assessing the nurses’ perception of spirituality and spiritual care. Objectives: To translate, adapt and validate the SSCRS into portuguese in a sample of portuguese palliative care nurses. Methodology: Methodological study using a sample composed of 94 palliative care nurses.
Results: The original structure of the 17-item scale was maintained during the scale validation process. A Cronbach’s alpha between 0.59 and 0.69 in the subscales and 0.76 in the total scale was obtained. These values are indicators of the scale’s reasonable reliability to be used in the population under study. Conclusion: The portuguese version of the SSCRS proved to be a reliable scale with content validity to assess the nurses’ perception of spirituality and spiritual care. Entrepreneurship in higher education students of the social area
In higher education (IE), entrepreneurship education traditionally occurs in areas of the business world (economics, management). The uncertainty of the labor market requires an entrepreneurial profile, also in the social area. Innovation is increasingly necessary in a social context and the promotion of creativity and design-thinking in the creation of business ideas in these students is crucial. 41 students, 97.5% female, finalists of the Social Education degree, explored their own job creation. An ad hoc questionnaire was used, and responses were submitted to content analysis. The majority (92.6%) showed interest in starting a new company and the others were motivated to innovate existing companies. The investment intention focused on supporting elderly in the community (32.6%) or in institutions (10.8) and people with disabilities (21.7%). Support for the community in general and for minority groups emerged with 10.8% each. The development of community intervention projects and home support services registered, respectively, 46.3% and 36.5%. The majority of students intend to support the business through foreign capital, namely bank loans (41.4%). With less representativeness, own capital (eg anticipation of unemployment benefits - 12.1%) emerged and 36.5% of students did not anticipate the financial support of creating their own jobs. The results are encouraging in relation to students with signs of entrepreneurship in less common areas (social area). Doubts about financial support may result from less investment in these students, highlighting an important path to be taken by higher education institutions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Response of vertebrate scavengers to power line and road rights-of-way and its implications for bird fatality estimates
Linear infrastructures, such as power lines and roads, are an important source of bird mortality.
However, little is known on the potential effect of these infrastructures on local scavenger guilds, their
foraging activity and the resulting bird carcass removal patterns. This is an important source of bias in
studies aiming to quantify bird fatalities due to linear infrastructures. We used camera-traps to record
scavenger identity and persistence patterns of bird carcasses placed close to linear infrastructure
and nearby controls in two Mediterranean agricultural regions. We found that linear infrastructure
influence on scavenger identity varied depending on the region. Contrary to expectations, linear
infrastructure presence had either none or a positive effect on carcass persistence, meaning that
carcasses placed within power line or road rights-of-way were not removed faster than the ones
placed in controls. We conclude that linear infrastructure effect on vertebrate scavenging patterns is
likely to be region-specific, and that reliable correction factors for carcass removal-bias in bird fatality
estimates require site-specific experiments to characterize local scavenging processesinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Contrasts in genetic structure and historical demography of marine and riverine populations of Atherina at similar geographical scales
In this paper, we compare the genetic structure and the historical demography of two populations of the sand smelt Atherina boyeri from the
rivers Tagus and Mondego (Portugal) with two groups of samples of the closely related marine Atherina presbyter collected on the shore at
comparable latitudes. A. presbyter is a pelagic marine inshore fish, while A. boyeri is typically found in coastal lagoons, estuaries and freshwaters
bodies. Analysis of mtDNA control region sequences showed that the marine A. presbyter did not display signs of genetic differentiation between
sites some hundreds of kilometers apart. On the contrary, A. boyeri showed clear differences between populations. The populations of A. boyeri
showed a much lower genetic diversity and younger coalescence times when compared with A. presbyter. We suggest that these differences
reflect the interplay between differences in ecology between the two species and the historical impact of the glaciations. While A. presbyter
likely moved to the south evading the cold periods, A. boyeri probably went extinct and its populations in Western Europe are recent recolonizations
from western Mediterranean refugia

Multilocus phylogenetic analysis of the genus Atherina (Pisces: Atherinidae)
Sand-smelts are small fishes inhabiting inshore, brackish and freshwater environments and with a distribution
in the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea, extending south into the Indian Ocean. Here, we
present a broad phylogenetic analysis of the genus Atherina using three mitochondrial (control region,
12S and 16S) and two nuclear markers (rhodopsin and 2nd intron of S7). Phylogenetic analyses fully support
the monophyly of the genus. Two anti-tropical clades were identified, separating the South African
Atherina breviceps from the north-eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Atherina’ species. In European
waters, two groups were found. The first clade formed by a well supported species-pair: Atherina presbyter
(eastern Atlantic) and Atherina hepsetus (Mediterranean), both living in marine waters; a second clade
included Atherina boyeri (brackish and freshwater environments) and two independent lineages of marine
punctated and non-punctated fishes, recently proposed as separate species. Sequence divergence values
strongly suggest multiple species within the A. boyeri complex
The use of artificial benthic collectors for assessment of spatial patterns of settlement of megalopae of Carcinus maenas (L.) (Brachyura: Portunidae) in the lower Mira Estuary, Portugal
Artificial benthic collectors have been widely used for the assessment of settlement rates of decapod
crustaceans. However, to date no consistent works have addressed spatial patterns of settlement in different
estuarine habitats, and no specific studies targeted the interaction of artificial surfaces with the surrounding
natural substrate. It may be expected that the artificial surface may produce a different thigmotactic
response when compared to the natural substrate, which may limit the use of this technique for assessment
of natural settlement rates. In this study the settlement rates of megalopae of the estuarine crab Carcinus
maenas were addressed, specifically deploying artificial benthic collectors in different habitats both intertidal
and subtidal in the lower Mira estuary. A number of experiments were performed concerning stratification
and temporal fluctuations of settlement. Further, the interaction of collector surface with the
surrounding substrate was investigated, by comparing settlement rates in natural and artificial substrates in
different habitats. Results have shown significant differences in settlement between different estuarine
habitats, both in spatially replicated experiments and in a high-resolution temporal experiment. However,
comparison between settlement rates in artificial and natural substrates has shown that there is a strong
interference between collectors and surrounding substrate, limiting interpretation of results concerning
settlement rates in artificial substrate alone
