    Algorithm for efficient symbolic analysis of large analogue circuits

    An algorithm is presented that generates simplified symbolic expressions for the small-signal characteristics of large analogue circuits. The expressions are approximated while they are computed, so that only the most significant terms are generated which remain in the final expression. This principle leads to dramatic savings in CPU time and memory compared to existing techniques, significantly increasing the maximum size of circuits that can be analysed. By taking into account a range for the value of a circuit parameter rather than one single number the generated symbolic expressions are also generally valid

    A novel algorithm is presented that generates approximate symbolic expressions for small-signal characteristics of large analog integrated circuits. The method is based upon the approximation of an expression while it is being computed. The CPU time and memory requirements are reduced drastically with regard to previous approaches, as only those terms are calculated which will remain in the final expression. As a consequence, the maximum circuit size amenable to symbolic analysis has largely increased. The simplification procedure explicitly takes into account variation ranges of the symbolic parameters to avoid inaccuracies of conventional approaches which use a single value. The new approach is also able to take into account mismatches between the symbolic parameters

    A Family of matroid intersection algorithms for the computation of approximated symbolic network functions

    In recent years, the technique of simplification during generation has turned out to be very promising for the efficient computation of approximate symbolic network functions for large transistor circuits. In this paper it is shown how symbolic network functions can be simplified during their generation with any well-known symbolic network analysis method. The underlying algorithm for the different techniques is always a matroid intersection algorithm. It is shown that the most efficient technique is the two-graph method. An implementation of the simplification during generation technique with the two-graph method illustrates its benefits for the symbolic analysis of large analog circuits

    Solving Scheduling Problems with Genetic Algorithms using a Priority Encoding Scheme

    Scheduling problems are very hard computational tasks with several applications in multitude of domains. In this work we solve a practical problem motivated by a real industry situation, in which we apply a genetic algorithm for finding an acceptable solution in a very short time interval. The main novelty introduced in this work is the use of a priority based chromosome codification that determines the precedence of a task with respect to other ones, permitting to introduce in a very simple way all problem constraints, including setup costs and workforce availability.     RiceWrist Robotic Device for Upper Limb Training: Feasibility Study and Case Report of Two Tetraplegic Persons with Spinal Cord Injury

    Regaining upper extremity function is the primary concern of persons with tetraplegia caused by spinal cord injury (SCI). Robotic rehabilitation has been inadequately tested and underutilized in rehabilitation of the upper extremity in the SCI population. Given the acceptance of robotic training in stroke rehabilitation and SCI gait training, coupled with recent evidence that the spinal cord, like the brain, demonstrates plasticity that can be enhanced by repetitive movement training such as that available with robotic devices, it is probable that robotic upper extremity training of persons with SCI could be clinically beneficial. The primary goal of this pilot study was to test the feasibility of using a novel robotic device –the RiceWrist Exoskeleton- for rehabilitation of the upper limbs (UL) of two tetraplegic persons with incomplete SCI. Two pilot experiments were conducted. Experiment 1was the first novel attempt to administer treatment with the RiceWrist. The left UL of a tetraplegic subject was treated during seven therapy sessions. The subject’s feedback and the investigator’s obser-vations were used to enhance the robotic device and the corresponding graphical-interface. In Experiment 2, a second tetra-plegic subject underwent 10 three-hour training sessions administered by a physical therapist. Smoothness factor (FS) –a new measure developed in Experiment 1- was used as the primary outcome to test the subject’s performance before and after the training. The RiceWrist was modified according to the feedback obtained in Experiment 1. Thereafter, the device was suc-cessfully administered for upper limb training of the tetraplegic individual. Noticeable improvements in FS were observed for the stronger arm of the subject who completed 10 sessions of training. Improvements were also observed in the subject’s hand according to the Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test. Results from this study suggest a potential application of the RiceWrist for rehabilitation of SCI individuals and offer valuable information regarding development of UL robotic devices for this population

    Late Pleistocene palaeoproductivity patterns during the last climatic cycle in the Guyana Basin as revealed by calcareous nannoplankton

    Variations in the assemblage and abundance of coccoliths reveal changes in oceanic and atmospheric dynamics in the Guyana Basin over the last climatic cycle, mainly linked to latitudinal variations in the ITCZ (Intertropical Convergence Zone). Records of the N ratio (a palaeoproductivity index of coccolithophores) allowed us to monitor nutri-thermocline fluctuations. Nannofossil accumulation rates (NAR) vary closely with the N ratio, indicating a strong correlation between these two palaeoproductivity proxies. Decreases in the N ratio and NAR values suggest lower palaeoproductivity during glacial substages, indicating a deep nutri-thermocline (deep stratification of the mixed layer) as a consequence of the piling up of warm water dragged by the NEC. This setting was favoured by the southern shift of the ITCZ and Trade winds which blew perpendicular to the Guyana coast. By contrast, increases in the N ratio and NAR values revealed higher palaeoproductivity during interglacial substages, suggesting a shoaling of the nutri-thermocline. This scenario is favoured by a northward displacement of the ITCZ with the southeast Trade winds blowing alongshore. Additionally, palaeoproductivity changes during substages of Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6-5 are of much higher amplitude than those recorded in substages of MIS 4-2 and the early Holocene. Similarities between the palaeoproductivity and the 65° N summer insolation records, suggest a link between the depth of nutri-thermocline, the latitudinal migration of the ITCZ and ice-sheet changes in the Northern Hemisphere

    The ReWalk ReStore™ soft robotic exosuit: a multi-site clinical trial of the safety, reliability, and feasibility of exosuit-augmented post-stroke gait rehabilitation

    BACKGROUND: Atypical walking in the months and years after stroke constrain community reintegration and reduce mobility, health, and quality of life. The ReWalk ReStore™ is a soft robotic exosuit designed to assist the propulsion and ground clearance subtasks of post-stroke walking by actively assisting paretic ankle plantarflexion and dorsiflexion. Previous proof-of-concept evaluations of the technology demonstrated improved gait mechanics and energetics and faster and farther walking in users with post-stroke hemiparesis. We sought to determine the safety, reliability, and feasibility of using the ReStore™ during post-stroke rehabilitation. METHODS: A multi-site clinical trial (NCT03499210) was conducted in preparation for an application to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The study included 44 users with post-stroke hemiparesis who completed up to 5 days of training with the ReStore™ on the treadmill and over ground. In addition to primary and secondary endpoints of safety and device reliability across all training activities, an exploratory evaluation of the effect of multiple exposures to using the device on users' maximum walking speeds with and without the device was conducted prior to and following the five training visits. RESULTS: All 44 study participants completed safety and reliability evaluations. Thirty-six study participants completed all five training days. No device-related falls or serious adverse events were reported. A low rate of device malfunctions was reported by clinician-operators. Regardless of their reliance on ancillary assistive devices, after only 5 days of walking practice with the device, study participants increased both their device-assisted (Δ: 0.10 ± 0.03 m/s) and unassisted (Δ: 0.07 ± 0.03 m/s) maximum walking speeds (P's < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: When used under the direction of a licensed physical therapist, the ReStore™ soft exosuit is safe and reliable for use during post-stroke gait rehabilitation to provide targeted assistance of both paretic ankle plantarflexion and dorsiflexion during treadmill and overground walking.
