    On the Relationship Between Time Management and Time Estimation

    The study explores the relationship between people's self-report of the use of time management practices and estimates of task duration. The hypothesis is that those who are good time managers will be good at estimating how long a future task will take (expected), how long a previously executed task has taken (retrospective) and how long a task is taking while in process (prospective). In the expected setting results indicate that those who perceive themselves as good time managers are most accurate at estimating the duration of a future task, of those who do not perceive themselves as good time managers some grossly overestimate and many underestimate to quite a considerable extent. The latter finding thus provides support for the 'planning fallacy' (Kahneman & Tversky,1979). In the prospective setting results indicate those who perceive themselves as good time managers tend to underestimate time passing. It is suggested that this is a motivational strategy designed to enhance a sense of control over time. Findings are discussed in relation to existing theories of time estimation

    Post-modernism has brought about changing demands with respect to time in work organisations. Whilst the impact of this has been given some attention at both the organisational and individual level far less has been given to a consideration of the extent to which individual differences might moderate the impact of such changes. In order to proceed with this line of enquiry it is necessary first to be able to measure individual differences related to time. This paper, through an analysis and synthesis of existing measures of individual attitudes/approaches to time, a subsequent qualitative study, and large quantitative survey study (N=683) identifies a five factor structure for time-related individual differences (Time Personality) and reports on the development of five complementary measurement scales : Leisure Time Awareness, Punctuality, Planning, Polychronicity and Impatience. A series of reliability and validity studies indicate that the scales are psychometrically sound. The findings are discussed in the context of the role Time Personality might play in moderating the effects that differing organisational structures and changing work demands might have in organisational settings

    Using marketing theory to inform strategies for recruitment : a recruitment optimisation model and the txt2stop experience

    Background: Recruitment is a major challenge for many trials; just over half reach their targets and almost a third resort to grant extensions. The economic and societal implications of this shortcoming are significant. Yet, we have a limited understanding of the processes that increase the probability that recruitment targets will be achieved. Accordingly, there is an urgent need to bring analytical rigour to the task of improving recruitment, thereby increasing the likelihood that trials reach their recruitment targets. This paper presents a conceptual framework that can be used to improve recruitment to clinical trials. Methods: Using a case-study approach, we reviewed the range of initiatives that had been undertaken to improve recruitment in the txt2stop trial using qualitative (semi-structured interviews with the principal investigator) and quantitative (recruitment) data analysis. Later, the txt2stop recruitment practices were compared to a previous model of marketing a trial and to key constructs in social marketing theory. Results: Post hoc, we developed a recruitment optimisation model to serve as a conceptual framework to improve recruitment to clinical trials. A core premise of the model is that improving recruitment needs to be an iterative, learning process. The model describes three essential activities: i) recruitment phase monitoring, ii) marketing research, and iii) the evaluation of current performance. We describe the initiatives undertaken by the txt2stop trial and the results achieved, as an example of the use of the model. Conclusions: Further research should explore the impact of adopting the recruitment optimisation model when applied to other trials

    A useful biological interpretation of diploid heterozygotes is in terms of the dose of the common allele (0, 1 or 2 copies). We have developed a PERL script that converts FASTA files into coded spreadsheets suitable for principal component analysis. In combination with R and R Commander, two- and three-dimensional plots can be generated for visualizing genetic relationships. Such plots are useful for characterizing plant genetic resources.     Is the Doppler interpretation of galaxy redshifts in a Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) model valid in the context of the approach to comoving spatial sections pioneered by de Sitter, Friedmann, Lemaitre and Robertson, i.e. according to which the 3-manifold of comoving space is characterised by both its curvature and topology? Holonomy transformations for flat, spherical and hyperbolic FLRW spatial sections are proposed. By quotienting a simply-connected FLRW spatial section by an appropriate group of holonomy transformations, the Doppler interpretation in a non-expanding Minkowski space-time, obtained via four-velocity parallel transport along a photon path, is found to imply that an inertial observer is receding from herself at a speed greater than zero, implying contradictory world-lines. The contradiction in the multiply-connected case occurs for arbitrary redshifts in the flat and spherical cases, and for certain large redshifts in the hyperbolic case. The link between the Doppler interpretation of redshifts and cosmic topology can be understood physically as the link between parallel transport along a photon path and the fact that the comoving spatial geodesic corresponding to a photon's path can be a closed loop in an FLRW model of any curvature.     Case report and literature review: transient Inab phenotype and an agglutinating anti-IFC in a patient with a gastrointestinal problem

    The Inab phenotype is a rare deficiency of all Cromer antigens. These antigens are carried on the decay-accelerating factor (DAF, CD55) molecule that is attached to the red blood cell (RBC) membrane by a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor. Although typically inherited, an acquired and transient form of the Inab phenotype also exists. A patient with the triad of transient Inab phenotype, a direct-agglutinating anti-IFC, and gastrointestinal (GI) abnormalities is reported. CASE REPORT: An 18-month-old boy with gastroesophageal reflux disease requiring a feeding tube, milk and soy intolerance, and severe growth retardation, as well as vision and hearing deficits from cytomegalovirus infection, was identified when pretransfusion testing revealed a potent panagglutinin (titer > 2000 at 4°C). This antibody did not react with Dr(a–) and IFC RBCs, and the autocontrol was negative. The patient’s RBCs lacked CD55 by flow cytometric techniques but had normal levels of CD59 and antigens such as Yt a and Emm, carried on GPI-linked proteins, thus excluding paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria. Several months after initial detection, the anti-IFC was virtually undetectable and his cells reacted weakly with anti-IFC, anti-Dr a , and anti-CD55. RBCs from the propositus’ parents and brother demonstrated normal CD55 and CD59 expression. CONCLUSION: This is the first example of a direct-agglutinating anti-IFC. The cause of the transient depression in CD55 protein (and thus Cromer system antigens) and appearance of anti-IFC remains unknown, as does the relationship between the patient’s GI system abnormalities and these serologic findings.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/71992/1/j.1537-2995.2006.00933.x.pd
