A food chain ecoepidemic model: infection at the bottom trophic level
In this paper we consider a three level food web subject to a disease
affecting the bottom prey. The resulting dynamics is much richer with respect
to the purely demographic model, in that it contains more transcritical
bifurcations, gluing together the various equilibria, as well as persistent
limit cycles, which are shown to be absent in the classical case. Finally,
bistability is discovered among some equilibria, leading to situations in which
the computation of their basins of attraction is relevant for the system
outcome in terms of its biological implications
The mitigation role of collaterals and guarantees under Basel II
Under the Basel II framework for capital adequacy of banks, regulatory financial collateral and guarantees (C&G ) can affect lending policy in both a micro and a macro perspective.
This paper aims at assessing these effects throught the modelling of the impact of C&G on credit spreads. In doing this we assume the perspective of a bank adopting a Foundation Internal Rating Based approach to measure credit risk and we apply a comparative-static analysis to a pricing model, based on the intrinsic value pricing approach as in the loan arbitrage-free pricing model (LAFP) suggested by Dermine (1996).
Our results show that financial collaterals are more effective than guarantees in reducing credit spreads, this differential impact becoming greater as the borrower’s rating worsen.
Moreover, the effects of C&G on credit spreads can be more effective than an improvement of borrower’s rating, this possibly leading to negative outfits on credit industries’ allocative efficiency.JRC.G.1-Scientific Support to Financial Analysi
Deposit Insurance Schemes: target fund and risk-based contributions in line with Basel II regulation
This paper discusses a deposit insurance model recently developed by De Lisa et al. (2010), highlighting its policy implications.
Compared to existing ones, the model proposed by De Lisa et al. (2010) presents the important advantage of taking into account Basel 2 banking regulation, thus linking two pillars of financial safety net: banks' capital requirements and deposit insurance.
The model, which estimates the potential loss hitting a Deposit Insurance Scheme (DIS) under several economic scenarios, can be used to establish the target size of the fund, which is the amount of money that the DIS should have available in case of need.

The geography of creative industries in Europe: Comparing France, Great Britain, Italy and Spain
The creative economy is a holistic and multidisciplinary concept that deals with the interaction between economics, culture and technology, and centred on the production of creative contents in goods and services. One of the most relevant dimensions of creativity is the territorial one. Despite the emphasis put on the theoretical definition of creativity, the measurement of creative industries and the use of these concepts in macro units as well as in isolated case studies, it is necessary to strengthen comparative research for the identification and analysis of the kind of creativity embedded in the territory, its determinants and its patterns of concentration. This compared research relies on the measurement of the creative industries and the identification of their territorial patterns of distribution in the local production systems of five European countries: Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Spain and Portugal. Creative local production systems are identified in these countries departing from local labour markets as territorial units, firms and jobs in creative industries, and focusing on two different kinds of creative industries: traditional cultural industries and technology-related creative industries. The results show that creative industries are more important in some countries like Italy and the United Kingdom, and that their spatial patterns of distribution are significantly different across countries, where three basic models emerge: distributed, concentrated and polarized. The implications of these patterns on the analysis of creative industries as well as on the design and implementation of policies are discussed
Low temperature district heating networks for complete energy needs fulfillment
In order to reduce fossil fuels consumption and pollutant emissions, high contribution is given by district heating. In particular, the integration with renewable energy may lead to a significant increase in energy conversion efficiency and energy saving. Further benefits can be achieved with low temperature district heating, reducing the thermal dissipations through the network and promoting the exploitation of low enthalpy heat sources.
The aim of the paper is the analysis of the potential related to the conversion of existing district heating networks, to increase the exploitation of renewable sources and eliminate pollutant emissions in the city areas. Further aim, in this context, is the optimization – from both energy production and operation management viewpoints – of a low temperature district heating network for the fulfillment of the connected users’ energy needs. To this respect, a traditional network with a fossil fuel driven thermal production plant has been considered and compared with a low temperature district heating scenario, including geothermal heat pumps, photovoltaic panels and absorption chillers. These scenarios have been analyzed and optimized with an in-house developed software, allowing to demonstrate the reduction of primary energy consumption and CO2 pollutant emissions achievable with low temperature networks. In addition, a preliminary economic evaluation has been carried out to compare the proposed solution with traditional district heating
A Semi Rigid Novel Hydroxamate AMPED-Based Ligand for 89Zr PET Imaging
In this work, we designed, developed, characterized, and investigated a new chelator and
its bifunctional derivative for 89Zr labeling and PET-imaging. In a preliminary study, we synthesized
two hexadentate chelators named AAZTHAS and AAZTHAG, based on the seven-membered heterocycle
AMPED (6-amino-6-methylperhydro-1,4-diazepine) with the aim to increase the rigidity of the
89Zr complex by using N-methyl-N-(hydroxy)succinamide or N-methyl-N-(hydroxy)glutaramide
pendant arms attached to the cyclic structure. N-methylhydroxamate groups are the donor groups
chosen to efficiently coordinate 89Zr. After in vitro stability tests, we selected the chelator with longer
arms, AAZTHAG, as the best complexing agent for 89Zr presenting a stability of 86.4 5.5% in
human serum (HS) for at least 72 h. Small animal PET/CT static scans acquired at different time
points (up to 24 h) and ex vivo organ distribution studies were then carried out in healthy nude
mice (n = 3) to investigate the stability and biodistribution in vivo of this new 89Zr-based complex.
High stability in vivo, with low accumulation of free 89Zr in bones and kidneys, was measured.
Furthermore, an activated ester functionalized version of AAZTHAG was synthesized to allow the
conjugation with biomolecules such as antibodies. The bifunctional chelator was then conjugated
to the human anti-HER2 monoclonal antibody Trastuzumab (Tz) as a proof of principle test of
conjugation to biologically active molecules. The final 89Zr labeled compound was characterized via
radio-HPLC and SDS-PAGE followed by autoradiography, and its stability in different solutions was
assessed for at least 4 days
Retrospective evaluation and SEEG trajectory analysis for interactive multi-trajectory planner assistant
Purpose: Focal epilepsy is a neurological disease that can be surgically treated by removing area of the brain generating the seizures. The stereotactic electroencephalography (SEEG) procedure allows patient brain activity to be recorded in order to localize the onset of seizures through the placement of intracranial electrodes. The planning phase can be cumbersome and very time consuming, and no quantitative information is provided to neurosurgeons regarding the safety and efficacy of their trajectories. In this work, we present a novel architecture specifically designed to ease the SEEG trajectory planning using the 3D Slicer platform as a basis. Methods: Trajectories are automatically optimized following criteria like vessel distance and insertion angle. Multi-trajectory optimization and conflict resolution are optimized through a selective brute force approach based on a conflict graph construction. Additionally, electrode-specific optimization constraints can be defined, and an advanced verification module allows neurosurgeons to evaluate the feasibility of the trajectory. Results: A retrospective evaluation was performed using manually planned trajectories on 20 patients: the planning algorithm optimized and improved trajectories in 98% of cases. We were able to resolve and optimize the remaining 2% by applying electrode-specific constraints based on manual planning values. In addition, we found that the global parameters used discards 68% of the manual planned trajectories, even when they represent a safe clinical choice. Conclusions: Our approach improved manual planned trajectories in 98% of cases in terms of quantitative indexes, even when applying more conservative criteria with respect to actual clinical practice. The improved multi-trajectory strategy overcomes the previous work limitations and allows electrode optimization within a tolerable time span
Persistent neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio >3 during treatment with enzalutamide and clinical outcome in patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer
The baseline value of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been found to be prognostic in patients with metastatic castration resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). We evaluated the impact of baseline NLR and its change in patients receiving enzalutamide. We included consecutive metastatic CRPC patients treated with enzalutamide after docetaxel and studies the change of NLR (>3 vs ≤3) after week 4 and 12 weeks. Progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS) and their 95% Confidence Intervals (95% CI) were estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method and compared with the log-rank test. The impact of NLR on PFS and OS was evaluated by Cox regression analyses and on prostate-specific antigen response rates (PSA RR; PSA decline >50%) were evaluated by binary logistic regression. Data collected on 193 patients from 9 centers were evaluated. Median age was 73.1 years (range, 42.8–90.7). The median baseline NLR was 3.2. The median PFS was 3.2 months (95% CI = 2.7–4.2) in patients with baseline NLR >3 and 7.4 months (95% CI = 5.5–9.7) in those with NLR ≤3, p < 0.0001. The median OS was 10.4 months (95% CI = 6.5–14.9) in patients with baseline NLR >3 and 16.9 months (95% CI = 11.2–20.9) in those with baseline NLR ≤3, p < 0.0001. In multivariate analysis, changes in NLR at 4 weeks were significant predictors of both PFS [hazard ratio (HR) 1.24, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.07–1.42, p = 0.003, and OS (HR 1.29, 95% CI 1.10–1.51, p = 0.001. A persistent NLR >3 during treatment with enzalutamide seems to have both prognostic and predictive value in CRPC patients
Age and Gender Affect the Composition of Fungal Population of the Human Gastrointestinal Tract
The fungal component of the human gut microbiota has been neglected for long time due to the low relative abundance of fungi with respect to bacteria, and only recently few reports have explored its composition and dynamics in health or disease. The application of metagenomics methods to the full understanding of fungal communities is currently limited by the under representation of fungal DNA with respect to the bacterial one, as well as by the limited ability to discriminate passengers from colonizers. Here we investigated the gut mycobiota of a cohort of healthy subjects in order to reduce the gap of knowledge concerning fungal intestinal communities in the healthy status further screening for phenotypical traits that could reflect fungi adaptation to the host. We studied the fecal fungal populations of 111 healthy subjects by means of cultivation on fungal selective media and by amplicon-based ITS1 metagenomics analysis on a subset of 57 individuals. We then characterized the isolated fungi for their tolerance to gastrointestinal tract-like challenges and their susceptibility to antifungals. A total of 34 different fungal species were isolated showing several phenotypic characteristics associated with intestinal environment such as tolerance to body temperature (37°C), to acidic and oxidative stress and to bile salts exposure. We found a high frequency of azoles resistance in fungal isolates, with potential and significant clinical impact. Analyses of fungal communities revealed that the human gut mycobiota differs in function of individuals’ life stage in a gender-related fashion. The combination of metagenomics and fungal cultivation allowed an in-depth understanding of the fungal intestinal community structure associated to the healthy status and the commensalism-related traits of isolated fungi. We further discussed comparatively the results of sequencing and cultivation to critically evaluate the application of metagenomics-based approaches to fungal gut populations
