Simulation of the hydrogen ground state in Stochastic Electrodynamics
Stochastic electrodynamics is a classical theory which assumes that the
physical vacuum consists of classical stochastic fields with average energy
in each mode, i.e., the zero-point Planck spectrum.
While this classical theory explains many quantum phenomena related to harmonic
oscillator problems, hard results on nonlinear systems are still lacking. In
this work the hydrogen ground state is studied by numerically solving the
Abraham -- Lorentz equation in the dipole approximation. First the stochastic
Gaussian field is represented by a sum over Gaussian frequency components, next
the dynamics is solved numerically using OpenCL. The approach improves on work
by Cole and Zou 2003 by treating the full problem and reaching longer
simulation times. The results are compared with a conjecture for the ground
state phase space density. Though short time results suggest a trend towards
confirmation, in all attempted modelings the atom ionises at longer times.Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures. Published version, minor change
Co-exposure of the organic nanomaterial fullerene C60 with benzo[a]pyrene in Danio rerio (zebrafish) hepatocytes: Evidence of toxicological interactions
Compounds from the nanotechnology industry, such as carbon-based nanomaterials, are strong candidates to contaminate aquatic environments because their production and disposal have exponentially grown in a few years. Previous evidence shows that fullerene C60, a carbon nanomaterial, can facilitate the intake of metals or PAHs both in vivo and in vitro, potentially amplifying the deleterious effects of these toxicants in organisms. The present work aimed to investigate the effects of fullerene C60 in a Danio rerio (zebrafish) hepatocyte cell lineage exposed to benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) in terms of cell viability, oxidative stress parameters and BaP intracellular accumulation. Additionally, a computational docking was performed to investigate the interaction of the fullerene C60 molecule with the detoxificatory and antioxidant enzyme πGST. Fullerene C60 provoked a significant (p 0.05) alter the enzyme activity when added to GST purified extracts from the zebrafish hepatocyte cells. These results show that fullerene C60 can increase the intake of BaP into the cells, decreasing cell viability and impairing the detoxificatory response by phase II enzymes, such as GST, and this latter effect should be occurring at the transcriptional level.Fil: Ribas Ferreira, Josencler L.. Spectral properties of stationary solutions of the nonlinear heat equation
In this paper, we prove that if ψ is a radially symmetric, signchanging stationary solution of the nonlinear heat equation (NLH) u - ∆u = │u │ α u, in the unit ball of RN, N=3, with Dirichlet boundary conditions, then the solution of (NLH) with initial value λψ blows up infinite time if │λ - 1│ > 0 is sufficiently small and if α > 0 is sufficiently small. The proof depends on showing that the inner product of ψ with the first eigenfunction of the linearized operator L= - ∆ - (α + 1) │ψ│α is nonzero

Estresse e Burnout entre residentes multiprofissionais
OBJECTIVE: To identify associations between high-stress and burnout syndrome in multidisciplinary residents from a federal university in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. METHOD: This is an analytical, cross-sectional and quantitative study. A socio-demographic questionnaire, the Work Stress Scale and the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Health Services Survey (MBI-HSS) were applied to 37 residents between April and June 2011. Inverse Power Law Quintessence with Non-Tracking Initial Conditions
A common property of popular models of quintessence dark energy is the
convergence to a common solution from a large range of the initial conditions.
We re-examine the popular inverse power-law model of quintessence (where the
common solution is dubbed as the 'tracker') with particular attention to the
initial conditions for the field and their influence on the evolution. We find
that previously derived limits on the parameters of the potential in this model
are valid only in a range of initial conditions. A reasonably sharp boundary
lies where the initial energy density of the scalar field is equal to that of
the background radiation component. An initial quintessence energy density
above this equipartition value lead to a solution that will not have joined the
tracker solution by the present epoch. These non-tracker solutions possess the
property that their present equation of state is very compatible with the
observed bounds and independent of the exponent of the potential.Comment: RevTEX4, 9 figure
