An 11,000-year record of depositional environmental change based upon particulate organic matter and stable isotopes (C and N) in a lake sediment in southeastern Brazil
The aim of this paper is to reconstruct an 11,000-year history of depositional environmental change in southeastern Brazil, based upon the integration of particulate organic matter and stable isotope (C and N) data from a 136-cm sediment core from Lake Canto Grande. These proxies are used to explore the evolution of terrestrial and marine influence on the lake. Isotopic (δ13C: -7.8‰ to -31.9‰; δ15N: -0.07‰ to 4.9‰) and elemental (total organic carbon - TOC: 0.58% to 37.19%; total nitrogen - TN: 0.08% to 1.73%; C/N: 0.3 to 54.7) values recorded in Lake Canto Grande suggest that the sedimentary organic matter was derived from mostly C3 land plants and freshwater phytoplankton. Particulate organic matter and cluster analyses distinguished four associations characterized by the predominance of amorphous organic matter, followed by phytoclasts and palynomorphs. These results indicate two different phases of lake evolution. The first phase (136 - 65 cm; ~10,943 cal yr. B.P. to ~8,529 cal yr. B.P.) is recorded by sand layers interbedded with mud, which contain amorphous organic matter (AOM, 45-59%) and phytoclasts (opaques - OP: 6-18%; non-opaques – NOP: 17-23%) which indicate a floodplain area. The second phase (65 – 0 cm; ~8,529 cal yr. B.P. to ~662 cal yr. B.P.) comprises mud, AOM (68-86%) and palynomorphs (PAL, 8-16%) related to lake establishment comparable to modern conditions. Thus, characterizing particulate organic matter, in combination with stable isotopes, proved to be invaluable proxies for lacustrine paleoenvironmental change through the Holocene
GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION OF EREMOTHERIUM (XENARTHRA, MEGATHERIIDAE) RECORDS IN MIDWEST BRAZIL
The aim of this article was to present the current fossil record and geographical distribution of Eremotherium in midwest Brazil. The methodology employed here included a bibliographic survey and mapping of specimens. On the last years, new information has been revealed on these ground sloths mainly due to new fossil discoveries in the western region of Goiás and Mato Grosso states. The temporal distribution shows that these records range from the Pliocene to Holocene. This taxon is an important representative of the Brazilian megafauna, and despite its wide Pan-American distribution during the Pliocene-Holocene, there are few known Eremotherium records from this large geographic region of Brazil

Cold and humid Atlantic forest during the late glacial, northern Espírito Santo state, southeastern Brazil
The Atlantic Rainforest, covering the area from the northern Espirito Santo to Southern Bahia states, has been considered as a stable forest during Pleistocene Glacial times. Despite the modelling and phylogenetic studies, this hypothesis has never been tested with empirical paleo-data and vegetation reconstruction. By using palynology, radiocarbon dating, carbon and nitrogen elemental and isotope of organic matter, we reconstructed the vegetation dynamics and inferred climatic changes since Late Pleistocene in the centre of this global biodiversity hotspot. Our results show that the forest biome was resilient to Last Glacial Maximum - LGM conditions, but floristics has changed when compared to nowadays. Since late glacial, the dense forest changed from cold to warm specimens. Major vegetation changes also occurred during early and mid-Holocene less humid conditions, with an opening of the forest, suggesting that future drought may have negative impacts and highlighting the importance of forest conservation to keep the Atlantic Rainforest biodiversity
Desenvolvimento da vegetação e morfologia da foz do Amazonas-PA e rio Doce-ES durante o Quaternário tardio
This work compares the vegetation and morphological changes occurred along the littoral of
the Marajó Island, Amazonian littoral, and the coastal plain of the Rio Doce, southeastern
Brazil, during the Holocene and late Pleistocene/Holocene, respectively, focused specifically
on the response of mangroves to sea-level fluctuations and climate change, which have been
identified in several studies along the Brazilian coast. This integrated approach combined
radiocarbon dating, description of sedimentary features, pollen data, and organic geochemical
indicators (δ13C, δ1₵N and C/N). On coastal plain of the Doce River between ~47,500 and
~29,400 cal yr BP, a deltaic system was developed in response mainly to sea-level fall. The
post-glacial sea-level rise caused a marine incursion with invasion of embayed coast and
broad valleys, and it favored the evolution of a lagoonal/estuary system with wide tidal mud
flats occupied by mangroves between at least ~7400 and ~5100 cal yr BP. Considering the
Marajó Island during the early and middle Holocene (~7500 and ~3200 cal yr BP) mangrove
area increased over tidal mud flats with accumulation of estuarine/marine organic matter. It
was a consequence of the marine incursion caused by post-glacial sea-level rise, further
driven by tectonic subsidence. Dry conditions in the Amazon region during this time led to a
rise is tidal water salinity and contributed to mangrove expansion. Therefore the effect of
relative sea-level (RSL) rise was determinant to the mangrove establishment in the
southeastern and northern region. During the late Holocene (~3050 – 1880 cal yr BP) the
mangroves in both regions were retracted to a small area, with some areas replaced by
freshwater vegetation. This was caused by the increase in river discharge associated to a wet
period recorded in the Amazon region, and considering the coastal plain of the Doce River
(southeastern Brazil), the mangroves shrank in response to an increase in fluvial sediment
resposta principalmente à diminuição do nível do mar. O aumento do nível do mar pós-glacial
sudeste do Brasil.
The integration of palynological, chemical, isotopic and stratigraphic data with radiocarbon
dating, obtained from two cores, allowed the identification of two periods during the last
millennium in the coastal plain of the Soure in Marajó Island. The first period, from 1275-
1165 cal yr BP to 760-480 cal years BP, indicates the expansion of herbaceous vegetation,
characterized by the presence of the Cyperaceae, Poaceae and Fabaceae. During this period it
was recorded the largest continental influence through the relationship δ
13C (-30 and -25 ‰)
and C/N ratio (20-40). During the last 500 years the mangrove vegetation has expanded, being
represented by the Rhizophora and Avicennia pollens. The C/N ratio decreased to values <20,
indicating an increase in the contribution of aquatic organic matter (phytoplankton). This
aquatic influence was observed on the lithology and sediment structure, indicated by the
predominance of silt-clay sediments with parallel-laminated and some millimetrics lens of
clay, which may have their origin associated to tidal flat. This trend during the last centuries
on the Marajó Island may be associated to the eustatic sea-level rise, changes in the Amazon
13C (-30 e -25 ‰) e a razão C/N (20-40). A partir
Evaluating decadal space-temporal mangrove dynamics using geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) on the Doce River delta-ES, southeastern Brazilian coast
Mangroves are ecosystems present in a large part of the Brazilian coastal zone that are home to a wide diversity of organisms, providing direct and indirect resources, as well as nursery and foraging habitats. Using images in 5-year intervals (2010, 2015, and 2020), the present study carried out a decadal mapping of the remaining mangroves of the Doce River delta along the tidal flats of the Mariricu River, in the coastal region of the city of São Mateus-ES. In this context, object-oriented classification methodology (GEOBIA) was used, which allowed the generation of high-resolution data. This methodology achieved excellent results, as evidenced by the global accuracy numbers and Kappa index, which gave an average of 96.78% and 93.5% respectively; and by low values of disagreement, with an average of 3.22%. The change detection analysis showed alterations in the landscape over time, with 9% of the mangrove areas becoming extinct, 12% of the areas expanding, and 79% of the areas remaining preserved. Therefore, our mapping data are consistent with the data published by the State Institute for the Environment and Water Resources of the State of Espírito Santo (IEMA), as well as with scientific works that recorded areas of reduction and expansion for mangroves, but mostly with large preserved areas. With that, our results demonstrate the highly effective application of geotechnologies for coastal environmental analyses with low cost and high speed
