This paper analyzes the exposition of information in websites through the virtual press room, and its possibility of feedback. With the analysis results given, we consider the adjustment to Grunig and Hunt´s communicative behavior business models. The results demonstrates an appropriate management regarding the exposure of information. Although there is information feedback systems, it could be suggested that its management is could be improved, due a limited presence and expressive capability. Consequently, a structural asymmetry between systemic exposure systems (highly developed) and feedback (with a more limited development) should be considered, which generates a synchronous system and fits the behavior model to the bidirectional asymmetric one

Abstract: This dissertation analyses prepositioned verb complements in European Portuguese and the problems posed by these in the context of translation. It particularly focuses on prepositions introducing these complements, which are often omitted, substituted or affected by a process of insertion. Since this is a critical area for European Portuguese speakers, it is also relevant in the scope of translation. In this context, prepositions in the source language do not always match those in the target language, which may therefore interfere in the process of translation, leading to non-grammatical structures. Considering the prepositions occurring with these complements and by describing and analysing the European Portuguese data with problems of preposition insertion, omission and substitution, this work aimed at: (i) the identification of the most occurring problem; (ii) the identification of the prepositions more often used in deviations and those which would be correct in that context to form a grammatical sequence; (iii) the identification of the predominant verbal class in the three types of analysed deviations; (iv) the analysis of the original’s tracing extent in both languages, as well as in relation to each of the languages; (v) the comparison between published and unpublished translations, especially in relation to the more often occurring deviation in each of these translation types. Regarding the corpus of this work, two published translations – one in English and the other in French – were analysed, as well as ca. 60 unpublished translations, also in both languages. The non-grammatical sequences founded in the above-mentioned translations constitute this dissertation’s database

Focal cortical dysplasias (FCD) are the main cause of refractory focal epilepsy in children and the third most frequent in adults. Epilepsy surgery can be an effective option in some of these cases. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain is key to the preoperative diagnosis of lesions, but it is often challenging, as the anomalies of FCD are often subtle and variable. However, its detection is crucial, since even small lesions can cause highly disabling epilepsies and because they often have a favorable post-surgical outcome. Aim: To review notions of the histopathology and pathophysiology, as well as the clinical manifestations, diagnostic methods and different therapies for FCD, maintaining a particular focus on the study protocol and the characterization of its imaging aspects on MRI. Methods: Retrospective analysis of cases of patients with histological diagnosis of FCD and managed by the epilepsy surgery group at Centro Hospitalar Universitário Lisboa Norte. The data used were obtained by consulting data bases and clinical files. Results: Between 1998 and 2021, 49 patients who underwent surgery for refractory epilepsy had a histological diagnosis of FCD. The most prevalent FCD subtype was IIIa (33%). The most frequently identified MRI findings were subcortical white matter hyperintensity on T2/FLAIR and hypointensity on T1 (22%) and blurring of the corticosubcortical interface (22%). Location in the temporal lobe was the most common, according to the most prevalent subtype (IIIa). Six patients were described in greater detail: two with FCD IIIa, given its high prevalence; a newborn, due to its distinct imagiological characteristics; two with FCD II and obvious MRI findings and one patient with FCD I and subtle imaging findings. Conclusion: FCD is a relevant cause of refractory focal epilepsy, diagnosed essentially by imaging, and its post-surgical results are positively influenced by the detection of the lesion on MRI - so it is essential to recognize its classic signs and pay attention to the future potential of new diagnostic tools

Determinants of Internationalization as Levers for Sustainability: A Study of the Portuguese Pharmaceutical Sector

    Get PDF
The pharmaceutical industry is facing the pressure of a global economy, loss of value in local markets and the highly intense innovation that characterizes this sector. This has a heavy impact, particularly in smaller economies. With this investigation, we intend to identify the determinants of internationalization as levers for sustainability in the pharmaceutical export sector of a small economy. Data was collected from a sample representing 63% of the total universe, Portuguese pharmaceutical organizations with exporting activity. A contextualization of the sector and a bibliographic review were previously carried out, which laid the groundwork for the empirical framework. This study revealed a deeply internationalized sector conditioned by a few shortcomings, namely a certain lack of sustainable competitive advantages, relatively low investment in research and development (R&D), insufficient innovation in internationalization strategies as well as scarce institutional support. Our findings may help pave the way for a more complete understanding of the dynamics of internationalization in highly competitive sectors.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Get PDF
In recent years, tourism has experienced remarkable growth worldwide. This sector is rapidly becoming the main export activity and the most important source of GDP growth in several countries. In Portugal, it represented around 19.7% of exports in 2019. The internet and online platforms contributed decisively to this growth. Generation Z already represents a considerable portion of society and, in the coming years, will become the central consumer segment. With this research, we intend to identify the key factors in the decision to purchase online, in Generation Z individuals, in the Portuguese tourism sector. We carried out a characterization of the sector, a bibliographic review and the identification of key variables. We applied a structured questionnaire to a sample of 233 individuals aged between 10 and 25 years. Subsequently, the data were processed using descriptive methodologies and association tests between variables. The key factors in the decision to purchase tourism products/services in Generation Z are Trust, Price, the use of aggregating websites, WOM/EWOM, the Offer of products/services online and the Online experience. In the opposite direction, it was given less importance to Convenience, Reviews on tourism websites, Tourism Advertising, Social networking and the possibility of Canceling the reservation. This study allows us to establish the bases for future research, to help researchers to understand Generation Z consumption habits.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Functionalized Cyclopentenones with Low Electrophilic Character as Anticancer Agents

In this study were synthesized non-Michael acceptor cyclopentenones (CP) from biomass derivative furfural as anticancer agents. Cyclic enones, both from natural sources and synthetic analogues, have been described as cytotoxic agents. Most of these agents were unsuccessful in becoming valuable therapeutic agents due to toxicity problems derived from unselective critical biomacromolecule alkylation. This may be caused by Michael addition to the enone system. Ab initio studies revealed that 2,4-substituted CPs are less prone to Michael additions, and as such were tested three families of those derivatives. We prepare the new CPs from furfural through a tandem furan ring opening/nazarov electrocyclization and further functionalization. Experimentally the 2,4-substituted CPs exhibited no reactivity towards sulphur nucleophiles, while maintaining cytotoxicity against HT-29, MCF-7, NCI-H460, HCT-116 and MDA-MB 231 cells lines. Moreover, the selected CP are non-toxic against healthy HEK 293T cell lines and present proper calculated drug-like properties

COMPETE Programme: SAICTPAC/0019/2015 IF/00780/2015 Project no. 022161Monocationic and dicationic cholinium ionic liquids (ILs) were synthesized and evaluated as acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors with in vitro and in silico models, and their cytotoxicity was assessed using human cell lines from skin (CRL-1502) and colon cancer (CaCo-2). The ILs with a longer alkyl chain were stronger AChE inhibitors, the dicationic ILs (DILs) being more active than the monocationic ILs. The best result was obtained for [N1,1,12,2(OH)]2Br2 at a concentration of 0.18 μM by reducing half enzyme activity without affecting the viability of tested cell lines. A saturation-transfer difference NMR (STD-NMR) binding study was carried out, demonstrating that [N1,1,12,2(OH)]2Br2 binds to AChE. STD-NMR competition binding experiments, using galanthamine as a reference ligand, clearly highlight that the IL displaces galanthamine in the AChE binding site pinpointing [N1,1,12,2(OH)]2Br2 inside the deep gorge of AChE. In order to obtain a three-dimensional (3D) view of the molecular recognition process, in silico molecular docking studies on the active site of AChE were carried out. The proposed 3D model of the AChE/DIL complex is in agreement with the STD-derived epitope mapping, which explains the competition with galanthamine and unveils key interactions in both peripheral and catalytic sites of AChE. These interactions seem essential to govern the recognition of DILs by the AChE enzyme. Our study provides a structural and functional platform that can be used for the rational design of choline-based ILs as potent AChE inhibitors.publishersversionpublishe

The impact of ABCDE bundle implementation on patient outcomes: a nationwide cohort study

    Get PDF
Background: The ABCDE bundle is a set of evidence-based practices to systematically reduce the risks of sedation, delirium, and immobility in intensive care patients. Implementing the bundle improves clinical outcome. Aims and Objectives: To investigate the association between patient outcomes and compliance with bundle components ABC (analgosedation algorithms), D (delirium protocol), and E (early mobilization protocol). Design: A Spanish multicentre cohort study of adult patients receiving invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) for ≥48 h until extubation. Methods: The primary outcome was pain level, cooperation to permit Medical Research Council Scale administration, patient days of delirium, and mobility. The secondary outcome was cumulative drug dosing by IMV days. Tertiary outcomes (ICU days, IMV days, bed rest days, ICU mortality, ICUAW) and independent variables (analgosedation, delirium, early mobilization protocols) were also studied. Results: Data were collected from 605 patients in 80 ICUs and 5214 patient days with IMV. Two-thirds of the ICUs studied applied no protocols. Pain was not assessed on 83.6% of patient days. Patient cooperation made scale administration feasible on 20.7% of days. Delirium and immobility were found on 4.2% and 69.9% of days, respectively. Patients had shorter stays in ICUs with bundle protocols and fewer days of IMV in ICUs with delirium and mobilization bundle components (P = 0.006 and P = 0.03, respectively). Analgosedation protocols were associated with more opioid dosing (P = 0.02), and delirium and early mobilization protocols with more propofol (P = 0.001), dexmedetomidine (P = 0.001), and lower benzodiazepine dosing (P = 0.008). Conclusions: The implementation rate of ABCDE bundle components was very low in our Spanish setting, but when implemented, patients had a shorter ICU stay, more analgesia dosing, and lighter sedation. Relevance to clinical practice: Applying some but not all the bundle components, there is increased analgesia and light sedation drug use, decreased benzodiazepines, and increased patient cooperation and mobility, resulting in a shorter ICU stay and fewer days of IMV
