    MSAT-X electronically steered phased array antenna system

    A low profile electronically steered phased array was successfully developed for the Mobile Satellite Experiment Program (MSAT-X). The newly invented cavity-backed printed crossed-slot was used as the radiating element. The choice of this element was based on its low elevation angle gain coverage and low profile. A nineteen-way radial type unequal power divider and eighteen three-bit diode phase shifters constitute the beamformer module which is used to scan the beams electronically. A complete hybrid mode pointing system was also developed. The major features of the antenna system are broad coverage, low profile, and fast acquisition and tracking performance, even under fading conditions. Excellent intersatellite isolation (better than 26 dB) was realized, which will provide good quality mobile satellite communication in the future

    Dramatically Increased Rearrangement and Peripheral Representation of Vβ14 Driven by the 3′Dβ1 Recombination Signal Sequence

    AbstractV(D)J recombination is targeted by short recombination signal (RS) sequences that are relatively conserved but exhibit natural sequence variations. To evaluate the potential of RS sequence variations to determine the primary and peripheral TCRβ repertoire, we generated mice containing specific replacement of the endogenous Vβ14 RS with the 3′Dβ1 RS (Vβ14/3′DβRS). These mice exhibited a dramatic increase in Vβ14+ thymocyte numbers at the expense of thymocytes expressing other Vβs. In addition, the percentage of peripheral Vβ14+ αβ T lymphocytes was similarly increased. Strikingly, this altered Vβ repertoire resulted predominantly from a higher relative level of primary Vβ14/3′DβRS rearrangement to DβJβ complexes, despite the ability of the 3′Dβ1 RS to break B12/23 restriction and allow direct rearrangement of Vβ14/3′DβRS to Jβ segments

    Stellar Iron Abundances: non-LTE Effects

    We report new statistical equilibrium calculations for Fe I and Fe II in the atmosphere of Late-Type stars. We used atomic models for Fe I and Fe II having respectively 256 and 190 levels, as well as 2117 and 3443 radiative transitions. Photoionization cross-sections are from the Iron Project. These atomic models were used to investigate non-LTE effects in iron abundances of Late-Type stars with different atmospheric parameters. We found that most Fe I lines in metal-poor stars are formed in conditions far from LTE. We derived metallicity corrections of about 0.3 dex with respect to LTE values, for the case of stars with [Fe/H] ~ -3.0. Fe II is found not to be affected by significant non-LTE effects. The main non-LTE effect invoked in the case of Fe I is overionization by ultraviolet radiation, thus classical ionization equilibrium is far to be satisfied. An important consequence is that surface gravities derived by LTE analysis are in error and should be corrected before final abundances corrections. This apparently solves the observed discrepancy between spectroscopic surface gravities derived by LTE analyses and those derived from Hipparcos parallaxes.     International audienceExploratory field measurements in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area (MCMA) in February 2002 set the stage for a major air quality field measurement campaign in the spring of 2003 (MCMA-2003). Involving over 100 scientists from more than 30 institutions in Mexico, the United States and Europe, MCMA-2003 revealed important new insights into the meteorology, primary pollutant emissions, ambient secondary pollutant precursor concentrations, photochemical oxidant production and secondary aerosol particle formation in North America's most populated and polluted megacity. A description of meteorological and atmospheric chemistry and aerosol microphysics measurements performed during MCMA-2003 is presented. More than three dozen published or submitted MCMA-2003 research papers are reviewed and key discoveries pertinent to understanding and improving air quality in Mexico City and similar megacities in the developing world are summarized
