A new dawn? The Roman Catholic Church and environmental issues
This is a PDF version of an article published in New Blackfriars© 1997. The definitive version is available at www.blackwell-synergy.com.This article discusses the stance of the Roman Catholic Church on environmental issues and argues that the Church tends to stay on the fringe rather than get involved. Some of the ways in which Roman Catholic theologians have incorporated environmental issues into theological reflection is discussed, as are environmental challenges facing the Church in Britain (conservation, resources, biodiversity, animal welfare, biotechnology, cooperate/individual ethics, environmental justice, economics/policy development, and global issues)
Equivalence and Stooge Strategies in Zero-Sum Games
Classes of two-person zero-sum games termed "equivalent games" are defined. These are games with identical value and identical optimal mixed-strategies but with different matrix entries and thus different opportunities for exploiting a nonrational opponent. An experiment was conducted to investigate the strategy-choice behavior of subjects playing pairs of these "equivalent games." Also investigated was the extent to which subjects would exploit a programmed stooge as a function of the degree to which the stooge departed from his optimal strategy mix. The results indicated that subjects learned to exploit the nonrational play of the stooge opponent. The game factor, on the other hand, seemed to have no significant effect upon the strategy-choice behavior of the players. The implications of these results are discussed in light of questions raised by previous research on decision-making in 2 x 2 zero-sum games.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/67183/2/10.1177_002200277301700306.pd
Breaking of general rotational symmetries by multi-dimensional classical ratchets
We demonstrate that a particle driven by a set of spatially uncorrelated,
independent colored noise forces in a bounded, multidimensional potential
exhibits rotations that are independent of the initial conditions. We calculate
the particle currents in terms of the noise statistics and the potential
asymmetries by deriving an n-dimensional Fokker-Planck equation in the small
correlation time limit. We analyze a variety of flow patterns for various
potential structures, generating various combinations of laminar and rotational
flows.Comment: Accepted, Physical Review
Analytical and numerical investigation of escape rate for a noise driven bath
We consider a system-reservoir model where the reservoir is modulated by an
external noise. Both the internal noise of the reservoir and the external noise
are stationary, Gaussian and are characterized by arbitrary decaying
correlation functions. Based on a relation between the dissipation of the
system and the response function of the reservoir driven by external noise we
numerically examine the model using a full bistable potential to show that one
can recover the turn-over features of the usual Kramers' dynamics when the
external noise modulates the reservoir rather than the system directly. We
derive the generalized Kramers' rate for this nonequilibrium open system. The
theoretical results are verified by numerical simulation.Comment: Revtex, 25 pages, 5 figures. To appear in Phys. Rev.
Decaying Dark Matter can explain the electron/positron excesses
PAMELA and ATIC recently reported excesses in e+ e- cosmic rays. Since the
interpretation in terms of DM annihilations was found to be not easily
compatible with constraints from photon observations, we consider the DM decay
hypothesis and find that it can explain the e+ e- excesses compatibly with all
constraints, and can be tested by dedicated HESS observations of the Galactic
Ridge. ATIC data indicate a DM mass of about 2 TeV: this mass naturally implies
the observed DM abundance relative to ordinary matter if DM is a quasi-stable
composite particle with a baryon-like matter asymmetry. Technicolor naturally
yields these type of candidates.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figure
Generalized quantum Fokker-Planck, diffusion and Smoluchowski equations with true probability distribution functions
Traditionally, the quantum Brownian motion is described by Fokker-Planck or
diffusion equations in terms of quasi-probability distribution functions, e.g.,
Wigner functions. These often become singular or negative in the full quantum
regime. In this paper a simple approach to non-Markovian theory of quantum
Brownian motion using {\it true probability distribution functions} is
presented. Based on an initial coherent state representation of the bath
oscillators and an equilibrium canonical distribution of the quantum mechanical
mean values of their co-ordinates and momenta we derive a generalized quantum
Langevin equation in -numbers and show that the latter is amenable to a
theoretical analysis in terms of the classical theory of non-Markovian
dynamics. The corresponding Fokker-Planck, diffusion and the Smoluchowski
equations are the {\it exact} quantum analogues of their classical
counterparts. The present work is {\it independent} of path integral
techniques. The theory as developed here is a natural extension of its
classical version and is valid for arbitrary temperature and friction
(Smoluchowski equation being considered in the overdamped limit).Comment: RevTex, 16 pages, 7 figures, To appear in Physical Review E (minor

The functional role of biodiversity in ecosystems: incorporating trophic complexity
Understanding how biodiversity affects functioning of ecosystems requires integrating diversity within trophic levels (horizontal diversity) and across trophic levels (vertical diversity, including food chain length and omnivory). We review theoretical and experimental progress toward this goal. Generally, experiments show that biomass and resource use increase similarly with horizontal diversity of either producers or consumers. Among prey, higher diversity often increases resistance to predation, due to increased probability of including inedible species and reduced efficiency of specialist predators confronted with diverse prey. Among predators, changing diversity can cascade to affect plant biomass, but the strength and sign of this effect depend on the degree of omnivory and prey behaviour. Horizontal and vertical diversity also interact: adding a trophic level can qualitatively change diversity effects at adjacent levels. Multitrophic interactions produce a richer variety of diversityâfunctioning relationships than the monotonic changes predicted for single trophic levels. This complexity depends on the degree of consumer dietary generalism, tradeâoffs between competitive ability and resistance to predation, intraguild predation and openness to migration. Although complementarity and selection effects occur in both animals and plants, few studies have conclusively documented the mechanisms mediating diversity effects. Understanding how biodiversity affects functioning of complex ecosystems will benefit from integrating theory and experiments with simulations and networkâbased approaches
Gamma-ray and radio tests of the e+e- excess from DM annihilations
PAMELA and ATIC recently reported an excess in e+e- cosmic rays. We show that
if it is due to Dark Matter annihilations, the associated gamma-ray flux and
the synchrotron emission produced by e+e- in the galactic magnetic field
violate HESS and radio observations of the galactic center and HESS
observations of dwarf Spheroidals, unless the DM density profile is
significantly less steep than the benchmark NFW and Einasto profiles.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures; v2: normalizations fixed in Table 2 and typos
