The relationship between adiposity, bone density and microarchitecture is maintained in young women irrespective of diabetes status
Background:
The relationship between bone health and adiposity and how it may be affected in people with chronic metabolic conditions is complex.
Methods:
17 women with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and 9 age-matched healthy women with a median age of 22.6 yrs (range, 17.4, 23.8) were studied by 3T-MRI and MR spectroscopy to assess abdominal adiposity, tibial bone microarchitecture and vertebral bone marrow adiposity. Additional measures included DXA-based assessments of total body (TB), femoral neck (FN) and lumbar spine (LS) bone mineral density (BMD) and fat mass (FM).
Results:
Although women with T1DM had similar BMI and bone marrow adiposity to the controls, they had higher visceral and subcutaneous adiposity on MRI (p<0.05) and total body FM by DXA (p=0.03). Overall, in the whole cohort, a clear inverse association was evident between bone marrow adiposity and BMD at all sites (p<0.05). These associations remained significant after adjusting for age, BMI, FM, and abdominal adiposity. In addition, visceral adiposity, but not subcutaneous adiposity, showed a positive association with bone marrow adiposity (r,0.4, p=0.03), and a negative association with total body BMD (r,0.5, p=0.02). Apparent trabecular separation as assessed by MRI showed an inverse association to total body BMD by DXA (r,–0.4, p=0.04).
Conclusion:
Irrespective of the presence of an underlying metabolic condition, young women display a negative relationship between MRI-measured bone marrow adiposity and DXA-based assessment of bone mineral density. Furthermore, an association between bone marrow adiposity and visceral adiposity supports the notion of a common origin of these two fat depots
A note on resistance to Hessian fly (Mayetiola destructor) [Diptera : Cecidomyidae] biotype L in tribe Triticeae
Quarante et une accessions de blés primitifs et indigènes (Triticum spp.), 16 accessions du genre Aegilops et 20 accessions ou cultivars du genre Agropyron ont été évaluées pour la première fois pour leur réaction au biotype L de la mouche de Hesse (Mayetiola destructor). Trois accessions du Triticum monococcum, 13 accessions du genre Aegilops et 13 accessions ou cultivars du genre Agropyron ont été trouvées résistantes de façon homogène. L'antibiose s'est manifestée dans certains cas mais dans certains autres, il est apparu une résistance physique attribuable à la présence de la pubescence foliaire ou de la ligule. La pubescence du Triticum boeoticum n'a pas été efficace afin de procurer de la résistance.Forty-one accessions of primitive and wild wheats (Triticum species), 16 accessions of Aegilops species, and 20 accessions or cultivars of Agropyron species were evaluated for the first time for reaction to biotype L of Hessian fly (Mayetiola destructor). Three accessions of Triticum monococcum, 13 accessions of Aegilops species, and 13 accessions or cultivars of Agropyron species were found homogeneously resistant. Antibiosis was operative in some cases but in others there appeared to be physical resistance due to the presence of leaf pubescence or ligule. Inter-study reproducibility of arterial spin labelling magnetic resonance imaging for measurement of renal perfusion in healthy volunteers at 3 Tesla
Background:
Measurement of renal perfusion is a crucial part of measuring kidney function. Arterial spin labelling magnetic resonance imaging (ASL MRI) is a non-invasive method of measuring renal perfusion using magnetised blood as endogenous contrast. We studied the reproducibility of ASL MRI in normal volunteers.<p></p>
Methods:
ASL MRI was performed in healthy volunteers on 2 occasions using a 3.0 Tesla MRI scanner with flow-sensitive alternating inversion recovery (FAIR) perfusion preparation with a steady state free precession (True-FISP) pulse sequence. Kidney volume was measured from the scanned images. Routine serum and urine biochemistry were measured prior to MRI scanning.<p></p>
Results:
12 volunteers were recruited yielding 24 kidneys, with a mean participant age of 44.1 ± 14.6 years, blood pressure of 136/82 mmHg and chronic kidney disease epidemiology formula estimated glomerular filtration rate (CKD EPI eGFR) of 98.3 ± 15.1 ml/min/1.73 m2. Mean kidney volumes measured using the ellipsoid formula and voxel count method were 123.5 ± 25.5 cm3, and 156.7 ± 28.9 cm3 respectively. Mean kidney perfusion was 229 ± 41 ml/min/100 g and mean cortical perfusion was 327 ± 63 ml/min/100 g, with no significant differences between ASL MRIs. Mean absolute kidney perfusion calculated from kidney volume measured during the scan was 373 ± 71 ml/min. Bland Altman plots were constructed of the cortical and whole kidney perfusion measurements made at ASL MRIs 1 and 2. These showed good agreement between measurements, with a random distribution of means plotted against differences observed. The intra class correlation for cortical perfusion was 0.85, whilst the within subject coefficient of variance was 9.2%. The intra class correlation for whole kidney perfusion was 0.86, whilst the within subject coefficient of variance was 7.1%.<p></p>
Conclusions:
ASL MRI at 3.0 Tesla provides a repeatable method of measuring renal perfusion in healthy subjects without the need for administration of exogenous compounds. We have established normal values for renal perfusion using ASL MRI in a cohort of healthy volunteers.<p></p>

Developmentally appropriate transitional care during the Covid-19 pandemic for young people with juvenile-onset rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases : the rationale for a position statement
Background
The importance of developmentally appropriate transitional care in young people with juvenile-onset rheumatic and musculoskeletal disease is well recognised. The Paediatric Rheumatology European Society (PReS) / European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) Taskforce has developed international recommendations and standards for transitional care and a growing evidence base supports the positive benefits of such care. However, there is also evidence that universal implementation has yet to be realised. In 2020, against this background the COVID-19 pandemic arrived with significant impact on all our lives, young and old, patient, public and professional alike. The unfortunate reality of the pandemic with potential for unfavourable outcomes on healthcare provision during transition was acknowledged by the PReS working groups in a position statement to support healthcare professionals, young people and their caregivers.
Aim
The aim of this review is to present the literature which provides the rationale for the recommendations in the PReS Position Statement.
Summary
The following areas are specifically addressed: the prime importance of care coordination; the impact of the pandemic on the various aspects of the transition process; the importance of ensuring continuity of medication supply; the pros and cons of telemedicine with young people; ensuring meaningful involvement of young people in service development and the importance of core adolescent health practices such as routine developmental assessment psychosocial screening and appropriate parental involvement during transitional care
The biology and behavior of the longhorned beetle, Dectes texanus on sunflower and soybean
The biology and behavior of the longhorned beetle Dectes texanus LeConte (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) was studied on two host plants that suffer economic losses from this pest; sunflower, Helianthus annuus, and soybean, Glycines max. Reciprocal crosses of D. texanus collected from the two plants all produced viable progeny, indicating that conspecific insects attack both crops. Pupae from soybean stalks weighed about 40% less than those from sunflower, and adults fed on soybean lived a mean of 23 days, compared to a mean of 53 days (males) and 76 days (females) for those fed sunflower. A female's larval host plant had no effect on her tendency to ovipuncture plants of either type in a greenhouse trial. A field-tested population collected exclusively from sunflower contained three types of females in similar proportions: those that laid eggs only on sunflower, those that laid only on soybean, and those that laid equally on both host plants. Females in field trials fed more on the plant they had fed on in the laboratory, but soybean-fed females fed more on soybean than did sunflower-fed females. Females fed soybean also made more ovipunctures on soybean plants in field trials than sunflower-fed females, but their responses to sunflower plants were similar. Females displayed higher total ovipositional activity when they encountered sunflower first in the field, and lower total activity when they encountered soybean first. Feeding scores were significantly correlated with ovipunctures and eggs on both plant types. We conclude that sunflower is the preferred host plant, although females will accept soybean when it is the only available food. The results suggest that D. texanus is still in the initial stages of a host range expansion with female host selection behavior demonstrating both genetic influences and phenotypic flexibility. Sunflower represents a nutritionally superior, ancestral host plant and relatively high fitness costs are still associated with utilization of the novel host plant, soybean, costs that may be offset by benefits such as reduced intraspecific competition. These potential benefits and their consequent implications for D. texanus host range evolution are hypothesized and discussed
What do young athletes implicitly understand about psychological skills?
One reason sport psychologists teach psychological skills is to enhance performance in sport; but the value of psychological skills for young athletes is questionable because of the qualitative and quantitative differences between children and adults in their understanding of abstract concepts such as mental skills. To teach these skills effectively to young athletes, sport psychologists need to appreciate what young athletes implicitly understand about such skills because maturational (e.g., cognitive, social) and environmental (e.g., coaches) factors can influence the progressive development of children and youth. In the present qualitative study, we explored young athletes’ (aged 10–15 years) understanding of four basic psychological skills: goal setting, mental imagery, self-talk, and relaxation. Young athletes (n = 118: 75 males and 43 females) completed an open-ended questionnaire to report their understanding of these four basic psychological skills. Compared with the older youth athletes, the younger youth athletes were less able to explain the meaning of each psychological skill. Goal setting and mental imagery were better understood than self-talk and relaxation. Based on these findings, sport psychologists should consider adapting interventions and psychoeducational programs to match young athletes’ age and developmental level
