A customizable multi-agent system for distributed data mining

We present a general Multi-Agent System framework for distributed data mining based on a Peer-to-Peer model. Agent protocols are implemented through message-based asynchronous communication. The framework adopts a dynamic load balancing policy that is particularly suitable for irregular search algorithms. A modular design allows a separation of the general-purpose system protocols and software components from the specific data mining algorithm. The experimental evaluation has been carried out on a parallel frequent subgraph mining algorithm, which has shown good scalability performances

The Effects of Bullying on Identity

This paper will explore the impact that bullying has on identity formation. Peers play a crucial role in identity formation for they encourage or discourage exploration of identity. The area of interest is identifying the types of bullying, potential targets and its effects on academics, mental health and prevention. Bullying negatively affects identity, academics, and has severe mental health and long-term consequences for the victim, bully and witnesses. Bullying can be prevented if awareness is raised on the issue. Educating the children and parents on bullying is an important step in prevention. Children need to be taught not only what bullying is but also what they should do if they see it happening or are the target. By educating parents, they can not only discuss the topics with the children, but also be aware of potential signs of bullying and get the child the appropriate help. Another method to prevent bullying is school-based intervention

Envejecimiento demográfico en México. Evaluación de los datos censales por edad y sexo, 1970-2000

El artículo analiza las modificaciones en la estructura de edad, y enfatiza sobre la plausibilidad de la hipótesis de sobreestimación de la población en edades avanzadas, a partir de la evaluación de la calidad de la información censal en cuanto a la declaración de la edad de dicha población en México a nivel de entidad federativa. Este último aspecto se cubre a partir de la aplicación del índice de Whipple modificado a la población adulta mayor proveniente de los censos de población de 1970 a 2000. En la actualidad existen personas que cuando se refieren a la enseñanza de las matemáticas lo hacen en términos de contenidos. Valoran el currículo matemático a partir de la inclusión o ausencia de contenidos. Consideran que una persona tiene formación matemática cuando muestra conocimiento y manejo de temas diversos de matemáticas. De este modo se constata la poca importancia que se da a los beneficios potenciales que se pueden obtener con el aprendizaje de la matemática en diversos niveles educativos. Se prefiere la acumulación de información, en vez de la habilidad para procesar los contenidos y descubrir relaciones entre diferentes objetos matemáticos. Evaluation of a Smart Alarm for Intensive Care Using Clinical Data

We describe and report the results of an evaluation of a smart alarm algorithm for post coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) patients. The algorithm (CABG-SA) was applied to vital sign data streams recorded in a surgical intensive care unit (SICU) at a hospital in the University of Pennsylvania Health System. In order to determine the specificity of CABGSA, the alarms generated by CABG-SA were compared against the actual interventions performed by the staff of the critical care unit. Overall, CABG-SA alarmed for 55% of the time relative to traditional alarms while still generating alarms for 12 of the 13 recorded interventions

Las teorías implícitas en la formación ocupacional y profesional

En este artículo se analizan las teorías implícitas y su papel en el ámbito de la formación profesional y ocupacional. Además se presentan los resultados relatives a las mismas obtenidas dentro de la investigación sobre el Perfil del formador de formación profesional y ocupacional. Se concluye que las teorías implícitas de dichos profesionales son multivariadas y no atienden a un único paradigma pedagógico. De ahí que seria conveniente que los centros de formación incluyeran en sus planes de estudio orientaciones acerca del abanico paradigmático que representan las diferentes teorías implícitas.En aquest article s'analitzen les teories implícites i el seu paper en l'àmbit de la formació professional i ocupacional. A més a més es presenten els resultats que hi fan referència obtinguts dintre de la investigació sobre el Perfil del formador de formació professional i ocupacional. Es conclou que les teories implícites d'aquests professionals són multivariades i no fan referència a un únic paradigma pedagògic. És per això que fóra convenient que els centres de formació incloguessin en els seus plans d'estudi orientacions sobre el ventall paradigmàtic que representen les diferents teories implícites.This article analyzes the implicit theories and the paper of these theories in the vocational training trainers profile research in relation to these theories. This study concludes the implicit theories of these professionals are multi-mixed and these theories aren't based on sigle pedagogic paradigm. So then it will be advisable that training institutions will include some orientations about paradigmatic possibilities that the different implicit theories express in the programmes

Pemilihan dan Penataan Vegetasi dalam Mengurangi Emisi Karbon Kendaraan di Terminal Purabaya

Carbon emission is one of the global problems that many vehicles generate. This is because humans rely on vehicles as a means of facilitating mobility to their destination. One of the most widely used vehicles is the bus vehicle. Terminal Purabaya is a type A bus terminal located in Sidoarjo Regency, East Java, which is very busy. This makes the terminal a significant contributor to carbon emissions due to the high number of vehicles entering and exiting the area. There are various methods that can be employed to reduce carbon emissions, one of which is the most natural approach, utilizing vegetation with the best carbon absorption capacity to decrease the carbon content in the surrounding air. Therefore, the selection of suitable vegetation to reduce carbon emissions at Terminal Purabaya is carried out through data analysis of total carbon emissions and the carbon sequestration capacity of trees. The results will provide the most effective vegetation for carbon reduction at Terminal Purabaya, allowing for appropriate arrangements to be made to mitigate carbon emissions at this terminal.Emisi karbon adalah salah satu masalah global yang banyak dihasilkan oleh kendaraan. Hal ini dikarenakan oleh manusia yang mengandalkan kendaraan sebagai sarana mempermudah mobilitas ke tempat tujuan mereka. Salah satu kendaraan yang banyak digunakan adalah kendaraan Bus. Terminal Purabaya adalah terminal bus tipe A yang ada di Jawa Timur tepatnya di Kabupaten Sidoarjo yang sangat sibuk. Hal ini menjadikan terminal ini penyumbang emisi karbon yang besar karena banyaknya kendaraan yang keluar masuk area ini. Ada berbagai cara yang dapat dilakukan untuk mengurangi emisi karbon salah satunya dengan cara paling alami yaitu memanfaatkan vegetasi yang memiliki penyerapan karbon terbaik sehingga kadar karbon di udara sekitar akan berkurang. Untuk itu, pemilihan vegetasi yang sesuai untuk mengurangi emisi karbon pada Terminal Purabaya dilakukan dengan analisa data perhitungan total emisi karbon dan daya serap pohon. Hasilnya, akan memperoleh efektifitas yang terbaik untuk vegetasi dalam pengurangan karbon pada Terminal Purabaya sehingga dapat diperoleh penataan yang sesuai untuk mengurangi emisi karbon pada terminal ini
