An integrated study of structures, aerodynamics and controls on the forward swept wing X-29A and the oblique wing research aircraft
The results of an integrated study of structures, aerodynamics, and controls using the STARS program on two advanced airplane configurations are presented. Results for the X-29A include finite element modeling, free vibration analyses, unsteady aerodynamic calculations, flutter/divergence analyses, and an aeroservoelastic controls analysis. Good correlation is shown between STARS results and various other verified results. The tasks performed on the Oblique Wing Research Aircraft include finite element modeling and free vibration analyses
Characters of graded parafermion conformal field theory
The graded parafermion conformal field theory at level k is a close cousin of
the much-studied Z_k parafermion model. Three character formulas for the graded
parafermion theory are presented, one bosonic, one fermionic (both previously
known) and one of spinon type (which is new). The main result of this paper is
a proof of the equivalence of these three forms using q-series methods combined
with the combinatorics of lattice paths. The pivotal step in our approach is
the observation that the graded parafermion theory -- which is equivalent to
the coset osp(1,2)_k/ u(1) -- can be factored as (osp(1,2)_k/ su(2)_k) x
(su(2)_k/ u(1)), with the two cosets on the right equivalent to the minimal
model M(k+2,2k+3) and the Z_k parafermion model, respectively. This
factorisation allows for a new combinatorial description of the graded
parafermion characters in terms of the one-dimensional configuration sums of
the (k+1)-state Andrews--Baxter--Forrester model.Comment: 36 page
Evolution of quantum observables: from non-commutativity to commutativity
A fundamental aspect of the quantum-to-classical limit is the transition from a non-
commutative algebra of observables to commutative one.However, this transition is not possible if we only consider unitary evolutions. One way to describe this transition is to consider the Gamow vectors, which introduce exponential decays in the evolution. In this paper, we give two mathematical models in which this transition happens in the infinite time limit. In the first one, we consider operators acting on the space of the Gamow vectors, which represent quantum resonances. In the second one, we use an algebraic formalism from scattering theory. Labour Supply, Work Effort and Contract Choice: Theory and Evidence on Physicians
We develop and estimate a generalized labour supply model that incorporates work effort into the standard consumption-leisure trade-off. We allow workers a choice between two contracts: a piece rate contract, wherein he is paid per unit of service provided, and a mixed contract, wherein he receives an hourly wage and a reduced piece rate. This setting gives rise to a non-convex budget set and an efficient budget constraint (the upper envelope of contract-specific budget sets). We apply our model to data collected on specialist physicians working in the Province of Quebec (Canada). Our data set contains information on each physician's labour supply and their work effort (clinical services provided per hour worked). It also covers a period of policy reform under which physicians could choose between two compensation systems: the traditional fee-for-service, under which physicians receive a fee for each service provided, and mixed remuneration, under which physicians receive a per diem as well as a reduced fee-for-service. We estimate the model using a discrete choice approach. We use our estimates to simulate elasticities and the effects of ex ante reforms on physician contracts. Our results show that physician services and effort are much more sensitive to contractual changes than is their time spent at work. Our results also suggest that a mandatory reform, forcing all physicians to adopt the mixed remuneration system, would have had substantially larger effects on physician behaviour than those observed under the voluntary reform.labour supply, effort, contracts, practice patterns of physicians, discrete choice econometric models, mixed logit
How to design and evaluate interventions to improve outcomes for patients with multimorbidity
Multimorbidity is a major challenge for patients and healthcare providers. The limited evidence of the effectiveness of interventions for people with multimorbidity means that there is a need for much more research and trials of potential interventions. Here we present a consensus view from a group of international researchers working to improve care for people with multimorbidity to guide future studies of interventions. We suggest that there is a need for careful consideration of whom to include, how to target interventions that address specific problems and that do not add to treatment burden, and selecting outcomes that matter both to patients and the healthcare system. Innovative design of these interventions will be necessary as many will be introduced in service settings and it will be important to ensure methodological rigour, relevance to service delivery, and generalizability across healthcare systems
Broadband multi-wavelength campaign on PKS 2005-489
The spectral energy distribution (SED) of high-frequency peaked BL Lac
objects (HBL) is characterized by two peaks: one in the UV-X-ray and one in the
GeV-TeV regime. An interesting object for analyzing these broadband
characteristics is PKS 2005-489, which in 2004 showed the softest TeV spectrum
ever measured. In 2009, a multi-wavelength campaign has been conducted with,
for the first time, simultaneous observations by H.E.S.S. (TeV), Fermi/LAT
(GeV), RXTE (keV), Swift (keV, UV, optical) and ATOM (optical) to cover the two
peaks of the SED. During this campaign PKS 2005-489 underwent a high state in
all wavebands which gives the opportunity to study in detail the emission

Scale without Conformal Invariance at Three Loops
We carry out a three-loop computation that establishes the existence of scale
without conformal invariance in dimensional regularization with the MS scheme
in d=4-epsilon spacetime dimensions. We also comment on the effects of scheme
changes in theories with many couplings, as well as in theories that live on
non-conformal scale-invariant renormalization group trajectories. Stability
properties of such trajectories are analyzed, revealing both attractive and
repulsive directions in a specific example. We explain how our results are in
accord with those of Jack & Osborn on a c-theorem in d=4 (and d=4-epsilon)
dimensions. Finally, we point out that limit cycles with turning points are

Structural network heterogeneities and network dynamics: a possible dynamical mechanism for hippocampal memory reactivation
The hippocampus has the capacity for reactivating recently acquired memories
[1-3] and it is hypothesized that one of the functions of sleep reactivation is
the facilitation of consolidation of novel memory traces [4-11]. The dynamic
and network processes underlying such a reactivation remain, however, unknown.
We show that such a reactivation characterized by local, self-sustained
activity of a network region may be an inherent property of the recurrent
excitatory-inhibitory network with a heterogeneous structure. The entry into
the reactivation phase is mediated through a physiologically feasible
regulation of global excitability and external input sources, while the
reactivated component of the network is formed through induced network
heterogeneities during learning. We show that structural changes needed for
robust reactivation of a given network region are well within known

Origin of the approximate universality of distributions in equilibrium correlated systems
We propose an interpretation of previous experimental and numerical
experiments, showing that for a large class of systems, distributions of global
quantities are similar to a distribution originally obtained for the
magnetization in the 2D-XY model . This approach, developed for the Ising
model, is based on previous numerical observations. We obtain an effective
action using a perturbative method, which successfully describes the order
parameter fluctuations near the phase transition. This leads to a direct link
between the D-dimensional Ising model and the XY model in the same dimension,
which appears to be a generic feature of many equilibrium critical systems and
