Quarry Waste: Chances of a Possible Economic and Environmental Valorisation of the Montorfano and Baveno Granite Disposal Sites
The Montorfano and Baveno granite ore bodies are located in the Lake District (VCO-NE Piedmont). They were and are still quarried as dimension stones, with a consequent production of a huge volume of “waste.” In 1995, an Italian company (GMM S.p.A) decided to invest in the valorisation of granite quarry waste as a secondary raw material. An in situ geological prospecting was carried out in order to evaluate the characteristics of the material and the thickness and volume of the useful disposal sites that could be used (by means of geophysical surveys). As a consequence of the field work, the amount of quarry waste was estimated as nearly 2 Mm3. Chemical analysis was carried out on 75 granite samples, in order to individuate the Fe2O3 grade: from 1.321–2.593% of the original waste to 0.160–0.228% after the “dry process” treatment. Three different detailed maps that show the typology, the locations, and the quality distribution of the material in the dumping areas have been drawn up
Implementing a Video Framework based on IIIF: A Customized Approach from Long-Term Preservation Video Formats to Conversion on Demand
This paper addresses the issue of elaborating a structure for digital video assets based on the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) concepts for the use in archival environments. With a view to tailoring a solution to fit the end user's needs, the dissemination copies of video material could be automatically converted on demand from their master files. Such a reduced data structure simplifies access to digital video sources but leads as well to simplified preservation due to reduced data volume and data complexity. Dissemination copies do not require specific dispositions for digital archiving anymore. Memory institutions would greatly benefit from a technology that can be integrated into a Web-based infrastructure. In such a way video content can for example be embedded into flexible Virtual Research Environments which allow scholars to work and cite more accurately video resources using IIIF
Joint multi-baseline SAR interferometry
We propose a technique to provide interferometry by combining multiple images of the same area. This technique differs from the multi-baseline approach in literature as (a) it exploits all the images simultaneously, (b) it performs a spectral shift preprocessing to remove most of the decorrelation, and (c) it exploits distributed targets. The technique is mainly intended for DEM generation at centimetric accuracy, as well as for differential interferometry. The problem is framed in the contest of single-input multiple-output (SIMO) channel estimation via the cross-relations (CR) technique and the resulting algorithm provides significant improvements with respect to conventional approaches based either on independent analysis of single interferograms or multi-baselines phase analysis of single pixels of current literature, for those targets that are correlated in all the images, like for long-term coherent areas, or for acquisitions taken with a short revisit time (as those gathered with future satellite constellations)
Full characterization of Gaussian bipartite entangled states by a single homodyne detector
We present the full experimental reconstruction of Gaussian entangled states
generated by a type--II optical parametric oscillator (OPO) below threshold.
Our scheme provides the entire covariance matrix using a single homodyne
detector and allows for the complete characterization of bipartite Gaussian
states, including the evaluation of purity, entanglement and nonclassical
photon correlations, without a priori assumptions on the state under
investigation. Our results show that single homodyne schemes are convenient and
robust setups for the full characterization of OPO signals and represent a tool
