    Early pulmonary response in rats infected with Trichinella spiralis

    The migratory stage of Trichinella spiralis, the newborn larva, travels along the pulmonary microvascular system on its way to the striated muscle cells. In the present study, an important inflammatory reaction was observed on days 5 and 14 p.i. in the lungs of infected rats. This inflammation was characterized by a Th2 cell phenotype of an hyperplasic bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue and by goblet cells hyperplasia. Among the inflammatory cells were eosinophils and mast cells scattered over the pulmonary parenchyma. On day 5 p.i. the number of IgE+, CD4+ and CD5+ cells in the bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue were increased and IgE-secreting lung cells were also detected. At the end of the migratory phase of the infection (day 14 p.i.), only IgE+ cells were detected in high numbers and in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, an increment in the total IgE levels as well as the presence of IgE and IgA anti-larvae surface were also detected. In cytotoxicity assays, cells from the bronchoalveolar lavage had considerable biological activity since they were able to kill the larvae even in absence of specific antibodies. These results show that the lung is an organ involved in the immune response developed early during a T. spiralis infection and suggest its importance in the protection of the host.Fil: Venturiello, Stella Maris.     Candida tropicalis antifungal cross-resistance is related to different azole target (Erg11p) modifications

    ABSTARCT: Candida tropicalis ranks between third and fourth among Candida species most commonly isolated from clinical specimens. Invasive candidiasis and candidemia are treated with amphotericin B or echinocandins as first-line therapy, with extended-spectrum triazoles as acceptable alternatives. Candida tropicalis is usually susceptible to all antifungal agents, although several azole drug-resistant clinical isolates are being reported. However, C. tropicalis resistant to amphotericin B is uncommon, and only a few strains have reliably demonstrated a high level of resistance to this agent. The resistance mechanisms operating in C. tropicalis strains isolated from clinical samples showing resistance to azole drugs alone or with amphotericin B cross-resistance were elucidated. Antifungal drug resistance was related to mutations of the azole target (Erg11p) with or without alterations of the ergosterol biosynthesis pathway. The antifungal drug resistance shown in vitro correlated very well with the results obtained in vivo using the model host Galleria mellonella. Using this panel of strains, the G. mellonella model system was validated as a simple, nonmammalian minihost model that can be used to study in vitro-in vivo correlation of antifungals in C. tropicalis. The development in C. tropicalis of antifungal drug resistance with different mechanisms during antifungal treatment has potential clinical impact and deserves specific prospective studies

    Evaluation of phosphatidylserine-dependent antiprothrombin antibody testing for the diagnosis of antiphospholipid syndrome: results of an international multicentre study.

    OBJECTIVE: A task force of scientists at the International Congress on Antiphospholipid Antibodies recognized that phosphatidylserine-dependent antiprothrombin antibodies (aPS/PT) might contribute to a better identification of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). Accordingly, initial and replication retrospective, cross-sectional multicentre studies were conducted to ascertain the value of aPS/PT for APS diagnosis. METHODS: In the initial study (eight centres, seven countries), clinical/laboratory data were retrospectively collected. Serum/plasma samples were tested for IgG aPS/PT at Inova Diagnostics (Inova) using two ELISA kits. A replication study (five centres, five countries) was carried out afterwards. RESULTS: In the initial study (n = 247), a moderate agreement between the IgG aPS/PT Inova and MBL ELISA kits was observed (k = 0.598). IgG aPS/PT were more prevalent in APS patients (51%) than in those without (9%), OR 10.8, 95% CI (4.0-29.3), p < 0.0001. Sensitivity, specificity, positive (LR+) and negative (LR-) likelihood ratio of IgG aPS/PT for APS diagnosis were 51%, 91%, 5.9 and 0.5, respectively. In the replication study (n = 214), a moderate/substantial agreement between the IgG aPS/PT results obtained with both ELISA kits was observed (k = 0.630). IgG aPS/PT were more prevalent in APS patients (47%) than in those without (12%), OR 6.4, 95% CI (2.6-16), p < 0.0001. Sensitivity, specificity, LR + and LR- for APS diagnosis were 47%, 88%, 3.9 and 0.6, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: IgG aPS/PT detection is an easily performed laboratory parameter that might contribute to a better and more complete identification of patients with APS.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Se propone plantear en este trabajo de grado el juego teológico que se da al comparar el rostro de Jesús que se encuentra en la vivencia de las primeras comunidades cristianas, tal y como lo recoge la Sagrada Escritura, con lo que plasmaron los integrantes de las mismas, en lo que hoy llamamos el primitivo arte cristiano o arte paleocristiano. La Teología no solo se fundamenta en la razón, sino también en la fe. La fe es una experiencia que atraviesa la historia, no es algo que aparece por generación espontánea en nuestra experiencia personal, sino algo que recibimos como testimonio y legado de generaciones anteriores que han tenido una experiencia de fe y que como nosotros, han descubierto un rostro de Dios y que, también como nosotros, han descubierto que una parte de su misión es contar y transmitir esa fe
