Large deviations

Treballs finals del Màster en Matemàtica Avançada, Facultat de Matemàtiques, Universitat de Barcelona: Curs: 2019-2020. Director: Marta Sanz-Solé[en] The objective of this project is to give an introduction to the theory of large deviations (LDP), a topic in stochastic analysis that can be described as the asymptotic evaluation of small probabilities at exponential scale. We start with the fundamental and initial result by Cramér (1938) and then, we formulate general LDP principles. A basic result in the field of large deviations for stochastic processes is Schilder’s Theorem regarding Brownian motion. A proof of this result is given in Chapter 4. Finally, we develop part of the Freidlin-Wentzell theory and give an application to LDPs for stochastic differential equations. Large deviations is a very active research area with many applications namely, in statistics, finance, engineering, statistical mechanics and applied probability. Nevertheless, because of time and space constrains applications are not considered in this work

Barcodes, motricity and aesthetics. The embodiment of cashier work

Few empirical studies have analysed the process of formation and/or transformation of dispositions from the perspective of Bourdieu's analytical framework or the closely related one of Lahire. This article helps alleviate this problem by studying the embodiment of work organization by new cashiers in a hypermarket. This question is approached from the dual perspective of Bourdieu's analysis of body care and dispositional dynamics. The data were obtained from an ethnographic study with participant observation that closely followed Wacquant's carnal sociology proposal. The article shows that two processes take place as the cashiers strive to learn: first, the adaptation of generic dispositions to the new situations of the hypermarket; and second, the incorporation of new specific gestural and motor dispositions and the memorization of technical procedures, protocols and barcodes.Existen muy pocos estudios empíricos que analicen el proceso de formación y/o transformación de disposiciones desde el marco analítico de Bourdieu o el cercano de Lahire. El artículo contribuye a paliar este problema con un estudio sobre el proceso de corporeización de la organización del trabajo por parte de las nuevas cajeras de un hipermercado. La cuestión se aborda desde la doble dimensión de análisis de Bourdieu del cuidado corporal y las dinámicas disposicionales. Los datos provienen de una etnografía con observación participante que siguió de cerca la propuesta de sociología carnal de Wacquant. El artículo muestra que durante el aprendizaje de las cajeras, que exige de su esfuerzo, tienen lugar dos procesos. Primero, una adaptación de disposiciones genéricas que se tenían a las nuevas situaciones del hipermercado. Segundo, una incorporación de nuevas disposiciones específicas gestuales y motrices y la memorización de procedimientos técnicos, protocolos y códigos de barras

Aportacions de Pierre Bourdieu a la "teoria de la ideologia"

El present escrit pretén fer un petit balanç de les aportacions que la perspectiva de l'estructuralisme genètic de Pierre Bourdieu ens ofereix per a l'estudi de les ideologies o per a la teoria de la ideologia. En concret, l'objectiu és valorar el potencial analític d'aquesta perspectiva, dels conceptes i models proposats, per comprendre aquella temàtica, més que no pas valorar les proposicions concretes de l'autor. L'escrit consta de tres apartats. El primer (el més breu) pretén una breu introducció a l'obra de Bourdieu que ajudi a entendre millor l'aproximació de l'autor a la nostra temàtica. En el segon (el més extens) s'ofereix una panoràmica de l'aproximació de Bourdieu a l'anàlisi de les ideologies, allò que ell en diu dominació simbòlica. Ens entretindrem a explicitar què entenia amb els seus principals conceptes i acabarem posant l'exemple pràctic de com es podria analitzar la dominació simbòlica del neoliberalisme des de l'òptica bourdeniana. I, finalment, al tercer apartat, conclourem valorant conquestes i virtuts, alhora que alguns punts crítics, que la perspectiva ens ofereix per a l'anàlisi de la temàtica

Yes, it is possible! Framing processes and social resonance of Spain’s anti-eviction movement

There are few empirical studies on the cultural consequences of social movements. This article contributes to alleviating this problem, examining the cultural outcomes produced by the action of the Platform for People Affected by Mortgages (PAH), one of the most important social movement organizations to appear in Spain in the 2010s. Concretely, through qualitative methods, we analyse the content and form of the PAH's discourse and the communicative practices developed to disseminate it to the population. Following, we examine this diffusion using quantitative methods. The article shows that PAH activists produced a discourse with a form and content that sought to achieve alignment with the common sense of the majority of the population, that their communicative practices took advantage of the opportunities offered by social and mass media, and, lastly, that the PAH's diagnosis and proposals resonated among a majority of the population
