Technology and economic inequality effects on international trade

The notion that technology plays a key role in explaining trade performed was supported in the last decades by many empirical studies. In this paper we use a different perspective trying to analyse the effects of technology and economic inequalities on international trade inequalities. The theoretical framework where we built our empirical analysis is the technological gap aproach. We considered eight European countries and 13 manufacture industries in the time period 1995-2002. We made a panel data model with a cross-sectional unit of analysis: the Euclidean distance among countries in each industry. We considered the Euclidian distance as a proxy of inequality among countries in each industry. We observed that technology and economic inequalities affect trade inequality and that the effect depends on the technological contend of each industry.Technology inequality, trade inequality, Euclidean distance, technological contend.

Presupuesto, tecnología e industria de defensa: una ecuación con tres incógnitas

La reducción de los presupuestos de defensa afecta no sólo a las capacidades de las Fuerzas Armadas, sino al futuro de las empresas que forman la base industrial y tecnológica de la defensa. Las variaciones presupuestarias de defensa afectan positiva o negativamente según su sentido a las industrias que se relacionan con el Ministerio de Defensa. En las circunstancias actuales, y debido a la crisis financiera, las reducciones presupuestarias que se venían produciendo se han acelerado drásticamente, por lo que su impacto es ya no sólo incremental sino que pone la continuidad del negocio del sector industrial y tecnológico en una situación de riesgo. Este ARI describe el alcance de las reducciones y su impacto sobre el sector industrial, la I+D, la innovación y la tecnología para concluir con algunas posibles soluciones para preservar el tejido empresarial, la ventaja tecnológica adquirida y el servicio público de la defensa

Revisión bibliográfica sobre los principales tratamientos en la anorexia nerviosa

Treball final de Grau en Psicología. Codi: PS1048. Curs acadèmic 2015-2016El objetivo de este estudio es realizar una revisión bibliográfica de los tratamientos más utilizados en adolescentes con anorexia nerviosa. Se ha llevado a cabo una revisión sistemática de las publicaciones científicas publicadas en los últimos 5 años (2011 – 2016) incluidas en las diversas bases de datos. La búsqueda se ha realizado a través de las siguientes bases de datos en línea PubMED, psyARTICLES y psyNET de la Universidad Jaime I, además se ha complementado con el buscador de internet Google Académico, libros y otras páginas web de interés. La búsqueda ha incluido los siguientes criterios de inclusión: población adolescente (12 – 18 años); estudios con seguimiento de al menos 6 meses; tratamientos conductuales y farmacológicos, y estudios realizados con muestras aleatorias de pacientes diagnosticadas con anorexia en base al DSM-IV-R o al DSM-V. De este modo, se han obtenido diferentes tipos de intervenciones que pueden ser clasificadas en tres grupos: los tratamientos psicológicos como la Terapia Cognitivo Conductual, la Terapia Familiar y los Programas Hospitalarios. El segundo grupo pertenece a la Rehabilitación Nutricional y Asesoramiento y finalmente el Tratamiento Farmacológico. Las principales investigaciones sobre el tratamiento de la anorexia nervosa se han centrado en la Terapia Cognitivo Conductual, y más recientemente en la Terapia Familiar. Estas intervenciones psicológicas tienen por objetivo ayudar a los pacientes con anorexia nerviosa a modificar la conducta y las actitudes relacionadas con el trastorno alimentario.The aim of this study is to carry out a literature review to identify the most commonly treatment for anorexia nervosa in young adolescents. A systematic review of the scientific literature published during the last 5 years (2011-2016) retrieved from different data bases has been carried out. The study was conducted using the online database PubMed (MEDLINE), psycARTICLES and psycNET accessed through the database platform of the University Jaime I, and also Internet search engine Google Scholar, books and other websites of interest. The research has included the following criteria: adolescent patients (12 to 18 years old), follow-up studies of at least 6 months; behavioral and pharmacological treatments, and studies with random samples of patients diagnosed with anorexia based on the DSM-IV-R or DSM-V. Following this search, we have chosen different interventions, they can be classified in three groups: psychological interventions, as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Family Based Treatment and Treatment in Inpatient, Residential, or Day Programs. We have also included Nutritional advice and counseling and the last group is about pharmacological treatment. Research on the treatment of eating disorders has focused primarily on Cognitive–Behavioral Therapy and, more recently, in Family Based Treatment. The goals of psychological interventions are to help patients with anorexia nervosa to understand and to change their behaviors and dysfunctional attitudes related to their eating disorder

The role of networking in the competitiveness profile of Spanish firms

Two main forces coincide nowadays in the characterisation of productive systems. On the one hand, the internationalisation of markets and economic activities has resulted in an increasing competition worldwide and a new and more global division of labour. On the other, the greater complexity of technology makes innovation a key factor in manufacturing firms’ competitiveness. Cooperative network relationships seem to be important in both processes. This paper aims to explore this aspect in the competitiveness behaviour of four Spanish manufacturing industries: food, chemicals, electronics and vehicles. Data has been obtained from a survey conducted specifically for this purpose at the firm level. Findings from the empirical analysis, based on the application of the Polytomus Logit Universal Model (PLUM), confirm the positive effects of the ability to network on company performance, particularly, intra-firm cooperation, cooperation between competitors and user-producer relationships.La internacionalización de mercados, de actividades económicas y la creciente competencia global son algunos de los factores que caracterizan los sistemas productivos actuales. A ello se suma una intensa complejidad tecnológica que afecta tanto a productos como a procesos productivos, concediéndole a la innovación un papel clave en la competitividad de las empresas manufactureras. En ambos procesos, las relaciones de cooperación empresarial se erigen como forma organizativa de creciente importancia. En este documento se explora la relación entre cooperación y comportamiento competitivo en cuatro industrias manufactureras: alimentación, química, electrónica y automóviles. La información estadística se ha obtenido a partir de una encuesta realizada a nivel microeconómico y diseñada específicamente con este fin en España. Los resultados que se derivan del análisis empírico, basados en la aplicación de un modelo Logit Universal (PLUM), confirman los efectos positivos de las relaciones cooperativas en los resultados empresariales, concretamente las relaciones intra-empresa, la cooperación entre competidores y las relaciones usuario-proveedor.Co-operation, Networking, Innovation, Competitiveness.

Panorámica de la problemática medioambiental en el mundo y en España

As energy resources become scarce and pollution increases, fundamental and often irreversible changes are affecting our global ecosystem, and these changes are already having an influence on countries’ potential for economic growth and development. In this article we examine the principal environmental problems worldwide and how such problems are affected by inequality between countries. In Spain’s case, the basic problems are greenhouse gas emissions, problems relating to water management and issues concerning territory and biodiversity. We also call for the application of economic funding mechanisms to implement environmental policies.Environmental problems, inequality and the environment, climate change, water management, biodiversity.

¿Valencia medieval: Continuidad o Ruptura?

En este trabajo se recoge todo lo trabajado a lo largo del Máster de Profesor de Educación Secundaria. Se trata de una Unidad Didáctica destinada a alumnos/as de 2º de ESO y donde se trabajan contenidos referidos a la Edad Media. Como se podrá observar no se trata de una unidad basada en la explicación del profesor sino que, basándonos en los principios del Constructivismo, serán los propios alumnos los que vayan construyendo los conocimientos con ayuda del profesor/a. Por lo tanto, se romperá la base de la educación tradicional de explicación del profesor/a y memorización de contenidos por parte de los alumnos/as. Con esto, se pretende, que no sean tan importantes los contenidos a tratar sino que los alumnos/as puedan llegar a ser críticos con el mundo que les rodea y obtengan, en definitiva, una educación para la vida. Respecto a la Unidad Didáctica, está centrada en el momento de la conquista cristiana de la ciudad de Valencia y la caída de los musulmanes. En ella, se intentará demostrar el gran legado cultural, económico y social que dejaron los musulmanes en la ciudad de Valencia y que fue adoptado por los cristianos, en la mayoría de los casos. Así, intentaremos romper con la dicotomía tradicional de cristianos buenos y musulmanes malos, tan extendida por la cultura europea

Channelrhodopsin unchained: Structure and mechanism of a light-gated cation channel

AbstractThe new and vibrant field of optogenetics was founded by the seminal discovery of channelrhodopsin, the first light-gated cation channel. Despite the numerous applications that have revolutionised neurophysiology, the functional mechanism is far from understood on the molecular level. An arsenal of biophysical techniques has been established in the last decades of research on microbial rhodopsins. However, application of these techniques is hampered by the duration and the complexity of the photoreaction of channelrhodopsin compared with other microbial rhodopsins. A particular interest in resolving the molecular mechanism lies in the structural changes that lead to channel opening and closure. Here, we review the current structural and mechanistic knowledge that has been accomplished by integrating the static structure provided by X-ray crystallography and electron microscopy with time-resolved spectroscopic and electrophysiological techniques. The dynamical reactions of the chromophore are effectively coupled to structural changes of the protein, as shown by ultrafast spectroscopy. The hierarchical sequence of structural changes in the protein backbone that spans the time range from 10−12s to 10−3s prepares the channel to open and, consequently, cations can pass. Proton transfer reactions that are associated with channel gating have been resolved. In particular, glutamate 253 and aspartic acid 156 were identified as proton acceptor and donor to the retinal Schiff base. The reprotonation of the latter is the critical determinant for channel closure. The proton pathway that eventually leads to proton pumping is also discussed.
