    Estimating the Effects of Lenght of Exposure to Traning Program: The Case of Job Corps

    Length of exposure to a training program is important in determining the labor market outcomes of participants. Employing methods to estimate the causal effects from continuous treatments, we provide insights regarding the effects of different lengths of enrollment to Job Corps (JC)— America’s largest and most comprehensive job training program for disadvantaged youth. We semiparametrically estimate average causal effects (on the treated) of different lengths of exposure to JC, using the “generalized propensity score” under the assumption that selection into different lengths is based on a rich set of observed covariates. “Placebo tests” are performed to gauge the plausibility of this assumption. We find that the estimated effects are increasing in the length of training, and that the marginal effects of additional training are decreasing with length of enrollment. We also document differences in the estimated effects of length of exposure across different demographic groups, which are particularly large between males and females. Finally, our results suggest an important “lock-in” effect in JC training.Training Programs, Continuous Treatments, Generalized Propensity Score, Dose-Response Function

    Improvement and analysis of a pseudo random bit generator by means of cellular automata

    In this paper, we implement a revised pseudo random bit generator based on a rule-90 cellular automaton. For this purpose, we introduce a sequence matrix H_N with the aim of calculating the pseudo random sequences of N bits employing the algorithm related to the automaton backward evolution. In addition, a multifractal structure of the matrix H_N is revealed and quantified according to the multifractal formalism. The latter analysis could help to disentangle what kind of automaton rule is used in the randomization process and therefore it could be useful in cryptanalysis.     A study on dynamics of mechanical systems including joints with clearance and lubrication

    In this work a methodology for the dynamical analysis of mechanical systems considering realistic joint characteristics, namely, joints with clearance and lubrication is presented. For the case of the joints with clearance modelled as a contact pair with dry contact, a technique using a continuous approach for the evaluation of the contact force is applied, in which the energy dissipation in form of hysteresis damping is considered. The friction forces are calculated using a modified Coulomb’s friction law. For the lubricated case, the hydrodynamic theory for dynamically loaded journal–bearings is used to compute the forces generated by lubrication action. The numerical results point out that the existence of dry joint clearances causes high peaks on the kinematic and dynamic system’s characteristics due to contact–impact forces when compared to those obtained with lubricated model.     Se evaluaron las siguientes características de la vacuna 9R contra tifoidea aviar: Capacidad de estimular la producción de anticuerpos aglutinantes contra S. pullorum, eliminación a través del huevo y las heces, influencia sobre la capacidad de producción de huevo y peso del mismo y efectividad para prevenir la infección experimental. La vacunación de aves a las nueve semanas y revacunación a las 18 semanas de edad no estimuló la producción de aglutininas. No se aisló la cepa vacunal a partir de huevo y heces de animales vacunados. No produjo disminución de la producción de huevo y ni del peso del mismo. La vacunación protegió cuando menos al 70% (<0.01) de las aves vacunadas

    Full wave modelling of hts dual mode patch filters and staggered coupled-line filters

    In order to obtain high-power handling, dual-mode patch HTS filters have been analyzed through Green's function and desegmentation techniques. A precise circuit model has been obtained and applied to the filter design process, and useful design curves relating filter parameters and physical dimensions of the square patch have been plotted. Several designs have been made using them and then optimized with the Method of Moments in the Spectral Domain. For higher order circuits, staggered coupled-line HTS filters have been considered. The designs have been made using the method of moments to compute the coupling capacitances, and then optimized with the Method of Moments in the Spectral Domain. One dual-mode patch filter and one staggered coupled-line filter have been fabricated on a YBCO film. Measurements agree well with simulationsPeer Reviewe

    Producción CientíficaThe promises of SDN and NFV technologies to boost innovation and to reduce the time-to-market of new services is changing the way in which residential networks will be deployed, managed and maintained in the near future. New user-centric management models for residential networks combining SDN-based residential gateways and cloud technologies have already been proposed, providing flexibility and ease of deployment. Extending the scope of SDN technologies to optical access networks and bringing cloud technologies to the edge of the network enable the creation of advanced residential networks in which complex service function chains can be established to provide traffic differentiation.     Structural and magnetic characterization of the intermartensitic phase transition in NiMnSn Heusler alloy ribbons

    "Phase transitions and structural and magnetic properties of rapidly solidified Ni50Mn38Sn12 alloy ribbons have been studied. Ribbon samples crystallize as a single-phase, ten-layered modulated (10M) monoclinic martensite with a columnar-grain microstructure and a magnetic transition temperature of 308 K. By decreasing the temperature, martensite undergoes an intermartensitic phase transition around 195 K. Above room temperature, the high temperature martensite transforms into austenite. Below 100 K, magnetization hysteresis loops shift along the negative H-axis direction, confirming the occurrence of an exchange bias effect. On heating, the thermal dependence of the coercive field H-C shows a continuous increase, reaching a maximum value of 1017 Oe around 50 K. Above this temperature, H-C declines to zero around 195 K. But above this temperature, it increases again up to 20 Oe falling to zero close to 308 K. The coercivity values measured in both temperature intervals suggest a significant difference in the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the two martensite phases.
