The relationship between Max Frisch and Ingeborg Bachmann is extensively documented, and traces of this relationship in the texts of both authors are undeniable. But one should be cautious to not make the positivistic mistake of presuming that writers always write about their own lives – or at least women writers. It is a biographical prejudice that women are not really able to objectify their experiences, to untie oeuvre from life. In this sense, Frisch’s and Bachmann’s story has become a topic of unpleasant gossip. But literary authors themselves have always overtaken such kinds of reductive interpretations: their work produces a project of subjectivity and autobiographical discourse, and rehearses the construction of ego and vita. One’s own autobiographical narration is at heart fictional: this is shown by ‘Gantenbein’, ‘Malina’ and ‘Montauk’. But these texts also make a point that takes us beyond the postmodern «anything goes»: the fact of offensiveness. Here, the most virtual image can deeply strike the real person. In reflecting this aggression however, the literary text leads it back to itself and accepts responsibility for it

Mörderisch illiterat: Kriminalität und Analphabetismus

peer-reviewed Literatur und Illettrismus verhalten sich naturgemäß antagonistisch. Diesen Gegensatz extrem zugespitzt hat die britische Autorin Ruth Rendell (1930–2015), die in ihrem Roman „Judgement in Stone“ (1977) eine Analphabetin zur Mörderin einer ganzen – exemplarisch bildungsbürgerlichen – Familie macht. Die nicht unproblematische Suggestion, erst das Lesen mache human, unterstützt der Text durch zahlreiche Zitate aus dem englischen Literaturkanon, meist von Shakespeare und Dickens: Intertextualität wird hier zum performativen Ausweis der Zugehörigkeit zu einer zivilisierten und empathischen Lese-Gemeinschaft. Der Zusammenhang von Analphabetismus und Kriminalität beruht aber nicht auf Kausalität, sondern besteht in einer Korrelation, in der Armut und Deklassierung Schlüsselfaktoren sind. On the refactoring of activity labels in business process models

Large corporations increasingly utilize business process models for documenting and redesigning their operations. The extent of such modeling initiatives with several hundred models and dozens of often hardly trained modelers calls for automated quality assurance. While formal properties of control flow can easily be checked by existing tools, there is a notable gap for checking the quality of the textual content of models, in particular, its activity labels. In this paper, we address the problem of activity label quality in business process models. We designed a technique for the recognition of labeling styles, and the automatic refactoring of labels with quality issues. More specifically, we developed a parsing algorithm that is able to deal with the shortness of activity labels, which integrates natural language tools like WordNet and the Stanford Parser. Using three business process model collections from practice with differing labeling style distributions, we demonstrate the applicability of our technique. In comparison to a straightforward application of standard natural language tools, our technique provides much more stable results. As an outcome, the technique shifts the boundary of process model quality issues that can be checked automatically from syntactic to semantic aspects
