    Production and characterization of activated carbon from wood wastes

    Cedarwood (Cedrela Angustifolia) and teak (Tectona Grandis) woods are typically used for furniture manufacture because they have high durability, are light and easy to work. During these manufacturing process, large amount of these wastes is generated causing disposal environmental problems. In this paper, the residual wastes (sawdust) of Cedar (C) and Teak (T) are transformed into an activated material. The chemical composition of both biomass (C and T) was determinate by TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis). Activated materials were characterized in surface area following the BET (Brunauer, Emmett and Teller) method, morphology using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and to know their functional groups a FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) analysis was done.     Adsorption of arsenate on Fe-(hydr)oxide

    Adsorption using metal oxide materials has been demonstrated to be an effective technique to remove hazardous materials from water, due to its easy operation, low cost, and high efficiency. The high number of oxyanions in aquatic ecosystems causes serious pollution problems. Removal of arsenate (H2AsO4 -), is one of the major concerns, since it is a highly toxic anion for life. Within the metal oxides, the iron oxide is considered as a suitable material for the elimination of oxyanions. The adsorption of H2AsO4 - on Fe-(hydr)oxide is through the formation of inner or outer sphere complexes. In this work, through computational methods, a complete characterization of the adsorbed surface complexes was performed. Three different pH conditions were simulated (acidic, intermediate and basic), and it was found that, the thermodynamic favourability of the different adsorbed complexes was directly related to the pH. Monodentate complex (MM1) was the most thermodynamically favourable complex with an adsorption energy of -96.0kJ/mol under intermediate pH conditions. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd

    Dyes removal from water using low cost absorbents

    In this study, the removal capacity of low cost adsorbents during the adsorption of Methylene Blue (MB) and Congo Red (CR) at different concentrations (50 and 100mg•L-1) was evaluated. These adsorbents were produced from wood wastes (cedar and teak) by chemical activation (ZnCl2). Both studied materials, Activated Cedar (AC) and activated teak (AT) showed a good fit of their experimental data to the pseudo second order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherms. The maximum adsorption capacities for AC were 2000.0 and 444.4mg•g-1 for MB and CR, respectively, while for AT, maximum adsorption capacities of 1052.6 and 86.4mg•g-1 were found for MB and CR, respectively. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd

    Este estudio tuvo como objetivo identificar las asociaciones entre el consumo de alcohol en adolescentes del municipio de Chía, Colombia, y la percepción que estos tienen del consumo de sustancias por parte de los padres y de la permisividad parental. Mediante un estudio correlacional se midieron las variables de interés a partir de una encuesta diseñada por los autores y aplicada a una muestra de 326 adolescentes. Los resultados mostraron una asociación positiva y significativa entre el consumo de alcohol en adolescentes y la percepción del consumo de los padres y de la permisividad parental. Se discute la importancia de generar programas preventivos que tengan presente las actitudes favorables de los padres hacia el consumo de alcohol en los adolescentes

    Early effects of estrogen on the rat ventral prostate

    Complex interactions between androgen and estrogen (E2) regulate prostatic development and physiology. We analyzed the early effects of a high single dose of E2 (25 mg/kg body weight) and castration (separately or combined) on the adult 90-day-old male Wistar rat ventral prostate. Androgen levels, prostate weight, and the variation in the relative and absolute volume of tissue compartments and apoptotic indices were determined for 7 days. Castration and exogenous E2 markedly reduced ventral prostate weight (about 50% of the control), with a significant reduction in the epithelial compartment and increased stroma. The final volume of the epithelium was identical at day 7 for all treatments (58.5% of the control). However, E2 had an immediate effect, causing a reduction in epithelial volume as early as day 1. An increase in smooth muscle cell volume resulted from the concentration of these cells around the regressing epithelium. The treatments resulted in differential kinetics in epithelial cell apoptosis. Castration led to a peak in apoptosis at day 3, with 5% of the epithelial cells presenting signs of apoptosis, whereas E2 caused an immediate increase (observed on day 1) and a sustained (up to day 7) effect. E2 administration to castrated rats significantly increased the level of apoptosis by day 3, reaching 9% of the epithelial cells. The divergent kinetics between treatments resulted in the same levels of epithelial regression after 7 days (~30% of control). These results show that E2 has an immediate and possibly direct effect on the prostate, and anticipates epithelial cell death before reducing testosterone to levels as low as those of castrated rats. In addition, E2 and androgen deprivation apparently cause epithelial cell death by distinct and independent pathways.48749

    Inhalable spray-dried chondroitin sulphate microparticles: effect of different solvents on particle properties and drug activity

    Spray-drying stands as one of the most used techniques to produce inhalable microparticles, but several parameters from both the process and the used materials affect the properties of the resulting microparticles. In this work, we describe the production of drug-loaded chondroitin sulphate microparticles by spray-drying, testing the effect of using different solvents during the process. Full characterisation of the polymer and of the aerodynamic properties of the obtained microparticles are provided envisaging an application in inhalable tuberculosis therapy. The spray-dried microparticles successfully associated two first-line antitubercular drugs (isoniazid and rifabutin) with satisfactory production yield (up to 85%) and drug association efficiency (60%-95%). Ethanol and HCl were tested as co-solvents to aid the solubilisation of rifabutin and microparticles produced with the former generally revealed the best features, presenting a better ability to sustainably release rifabutin. Moreover, these presented aerodynamic properties compatible with deep lung deposition, with an aerodynamic diameter around 4 μm and fine particle fraction of approximately 44%.
