    Effects of 14 Day E-Cigarette Exposure on Ventilation and Circulating Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines in Adolescent Rats

    Electronic nicotine delivery systems or e-cigarettes are devices used to deliver vaporized liquids often containing nicotine and other chemicals. These devices were originally created as a way to assist with smoking cessation in adults; however, use of these devices is increasing in adolescent and young adult populations. Recent research suggests that exposure to the chemicals in e-cigarette vapor may cause harm to adolescent lung tissue and promote a proinflammatory immune response in the lungs. These molecular changes may lead to functional changes in terms of lung volumes or gas exchange at the respiratory membrane. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 14 days of e-cigarette vapor exposure in adolescent rats on lung function and lung tissue proinflammatory cytokine expression, specifically IL-1β. METHODS: Using random assignment, 20 adolescent male Long Evans rats were assigned to vape (experimental) or air (control) groups. The animals were exposed to either air (n = 10) or 5% nicotine vapor (n=10) using a whole-body exposure chamber, once a day for ten minutes for fourteen consecutive days. Ventilation recordings were completed on day 0 (before exposure) and day 15 (after exposure) using unrestrained whole-body plethysmography. Minute ventilation/100g, tidal volume/100g, and breathing frequency were assessed. Blood was collected on day 15 and processed to serum. Serum samples were analyzed for circulating levels of the nicotine metabolite, cotinine, and the proinflammatory cytokine, IL-1β, using enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). RESULTS: Cotinine was found to be present in the serum samples of the vape groups (20.71 ng/ml +/- 6.875 ng/mL) but not the air groups (0.007 +/- 0.019 ng/mL) confirming nicotine and vapor exposure. Baseline ventilation data collected on day 0 and post-exposure ventilation data collected on day 15 were compared between air and vape groups across three different parameters: minute ventilation/100g , frequency, and tidal volume/100 g. These parameters were compared resulting in three distinct 2x2 (time x treatment) Mixed Model ANOVAs. Between baseline and post-treatment measurements, for both groups, there was a significant decrease in values in minute ventilation (F(1,15) = 5.647, p = 0.0312) and tidal volume (F(1,15) = 12.38, p = 0.0031). Between treatment groups there was also a significant difference in minute ventilation (F(1,15) = 7.979, p = 0.0128) and frequency (F(1,15) = 11.35, p = 0.0042). There was also significantly lower levels observed in the inflammatory cytokine IL-1β (p \u3c 0.0136) for the vape group (22.13 +/- 19.96 pg/mL) in comparison to the air group (3.28 +/- 3.52 pg/mL). CONCLUSIONS: Following 14 days of e-cigarette vapor exposure, ventilation patterns were altered in the vapor exposed animals, specifically decreasing tidal volume and minute ventilation. Additionally, in these same vapor exposed animals, circulating levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine, IL-1ꞵ, was decreased suggesting dysregulation of immune pathways. Taken together these results suggest that the use of e-cigarettes may lead to both functional and molecular changes in adolescent lungs, interfering with pulmonary function and affecting one’s quality of life

    Vegetation water use based on a thermal and optical remote sensing model in the mediterranean region of Doñana

    Terrestrial evapotranspiration (ET) is a central process in the climate system, is a major component in the terrestrial water budget, and is responsible for the distribution of water and energy on land surfaces especially in arid and semiarid areas. In order to inform water management decisions especially in scarce water environments, it is important to assess ET vegetation use by differentiating irrigated socio-economic areas and natural ecosystems. The global remote sensing ET product MOD16 has proven to underestimate ET in semiarid regions where ET is very sensitive to soil moisture. The objective of this research was to test whether a modified version of the remote sensing ET model PT-JPL, proven to perform well in drylands at Eddy Covariance flux sites using the land surface temperature as a proxy to the surface moisture status (PT-JPL-thermal), could be up-scaled at regional levels introducing also a new formulation for net radiation from various MODIS products. We applied three methods to track the spatial and temporal characteristics of ET in the World Heritage UNESCO Doñana region: (i) a locally calibrated hydrological model (WATEN), (ii) the PT-JPL-thermal, and (iii) the global remote sensing ET product MOD16. The PT-JPL-thermal showed strong agreement with the WATEN ET in-situ calibrated estimates (ρ = 0.78, ρ1month-lag = 0.94) even though the MOD16 product did not (ρ = 0.48). The PT-JPL-thermal approach has proven to be a robust remote sensing model for detecting ET at a regional level in Mediterranean environments and it requires only air temperature and incoming solar radiation from climatic databases apart from freely available satellite products

    Promoting Spiritual Wellness on a College Campus through Community Based Participatory Research

    This case study describes an initiative to promote spiritual wellness on a public state college campus and demonstrates evidence of the effectiveness of taking a community-based approach. We employed the community readiness model to develop an initiative to promote spiritual wellness in a Midwestern state university. We recruited informants through purposeful sampling and conducted interviews, both pre- and post-initiative launch. Baseline data was used to inform initiative efforts. The community’s level of readiness to promote spiritual wellness increased from stage three, vague awareness, at baseline to stage six, initiation, at follow up. Although these findings are specific to our community, this communitybased participatipatory research approach may be an effective way of developing appropriate strategies to promoting spiritual practices throughout higher education

    Upstream watershed condition predicts rural children\u27s health across 35 developing countries

    Diarrheal disease (DD) due to contaminated water is a major cause of child mortality globally. Forests and wetlands can provide ecosystem services that help maintain water quality. To understand the connections between land cover and childhood DD, we compiled a database of 293,362 children in 35 countries with information on health, socioeconomic factors, climate, and watershed condition. Using hierarchical models, here we find that higher upstream tree cover is associated with lower probability of DD downstream. This effect is significant for rural households but not for urban households, suggesting differing dependence on watershed conditions. In rural areas, the effect of a 30% increase in upstream tree cover is similar to the effect of improved sanitation, but smaller than the effect of improved water source, wealth or education. We conclude that maintaining natural capital within watersheds can be an important public health investment, especially for populations with low levels of built capital

    Identifying Ancient Settlement Patterns through LiDAR in the Mosquitia Region of Honduras

    The Mosquitia ecosystem of Honduras occupies the fulcrum between the American continents and as such constitutes a critical region for understanding past patterns of socio-political development and interaction. Heavy vegetation, rugged topography, and remoteness have limited scientific investigation. This paper presents prehistoric patterns of settlement and landuse for a critical valley within the Mosquitia derived from airborne LiDAR scanning and field investigation. We show that (i) though today the valley is a wilderness it was densely inhabited in the past; (ii) that this population was organized into a three-tiered system composed of 19 settlements dominated by a city; and, (iii) that this occupation was embedded within a human engineered landscape. We also add to a growing body of literature that demonstrates the utility of LiDAR as means for rapid cultural assessments in undocumented regions for analysis and conservation. Our ultimate hope is for our work to promote protections to safeguard the unique and critically endangered Mosquitia ecosystem and other similar areas in need of preservation
