    Bearing defect signature analysis using advanced nonlinear signal analysis in a controlled environment

    Utilizing high-frequency data from a highly instrumented rotor assembly, seeded bearing defect signatures are characterized using both conventional linear approaches, such as power spectral density analysis, and recently developed nonlinear techniques such as bicoherence analysis. Traditional low-frequency (less than 20 kHz) analysis and high-frequency envelope analysis of both accelerometer and acoustic emission data are used to recover characteristic bearing distress information buried deeply in acquired data. The successful coupling of newly developed nonlinear signal analysis with recovered wideband envelope data from accelerometers and acoustic emission sensors is the innovative focus of this research

    International audienceIn this paper, decisional models are introduced aiming at defining a general framework for natural disaster mitigation. More specifically, an integrated approach based on system modelling and optimal resource assignment is presented in order to support the decision makers in pre-operational and real-time management of forest fire emergencies. Some strategies for pre-operative and real time risk management will be described and formalized as optimal resource assignment problems. To this end, some models capable to describe the resources dynamics will be introduced, both in pre-operative phase and in real-time phase

    Absolute Magnitude Calibration for Red Giants based on the Colour-Magnitude Diagrams of Galactic Clusters. III-Calibration with 2MASS

    We present two absolute magnitude calibrations, MJM_{J} and MKsM_{K_s}, for red giants with the colour magnitude diagrams of five Galactic clusters with different metallicities i.e. M92, M13, M71, M67, and NGC 6791. The combination of the absolute magnitudes of the red giant sequences with the corresponding metallicities provides calibration for absolute magnitude estimation for red giants for a given colour. The calibrations for MJM_{J} and MKsM_{K_s} are defined in the colour intervals 1.3(VJ)02.81.3\leq(V-J)_{0}\leq2.8 and 1.75(VKs)03.801.75 \leq (V-K_{s})_{0}\leq 3.80 mag, respectively, and they cover the metallicity interval 2.15[Fe/H]+0.37-2.15 \leq \lbrack Fe/H \rbrack \leq +0.37 dex. The absolute magnitude residuals obtained by the application of the procedure to another set of Galactic clusters lie in the intervals 0.08<ΔMJ+0.34-0.08<\Delta M_{J}\leq +0.34 and 0.10<ΔMKs+0.27-0.10< \Delta M_{K_s}\leq +0.27 mag for MJM_{J} and MKsM_{K_s}, respectively. The means and standard deviations of the residuals are =0.137= 0.137 and σMJ=0.080\sigma_{M_J}=0.080, and =0.109=0.109 and σMKs=0.123\sigma_{M_{K_{s}}}=0.123 mag.     Inhibition of acetylpolyamine and spermine oxidases by the polyamine analogue chlorhexidine

    ""Acetylpolyamine and spermine oxidases are involved in the catabolism of polyamines. The discovery of selective. inhibitors of these enzymes represents an important tool for the development of novel anti-neoplastic drugs. Here, a. comparative study on acetylpolyamine and spermine oxidases inhibition by the polyamine analogue chlorhexidine. is reported. Chlorhexidine is an antiseptic diamide, commonly used as a bactericidal and bacteriostatic agent.. Docking simulations indicate that chlorhexidine binding to these enzymes is compatible with the stereochemical. properties of both acetylpolyamine oxidase and spermine oxidase active sites. In fact, chlorhexidine is predicted. to establish several polar and hydrophobic interactions with the active site residues of both enzymes, with binding. energy values ranging from −7.6 to −10.6 kcal\\\/mol. In agreement with this hypothesis, inhibition studies indicate that. chlorhexidine behaves as a strong competitive inhibitor of both enzymes, values of Ki being 0.10 μM and 0.55 μM for. acetylpolyamine oxidase and spermine oxidase, respectively."

    Multiband optical polarimetry of BL Lac objects with the Nordic Optical Telescope

    Optical polarization of seven selected BL Lac objects in UBVRI bands was studied with the Nordic Optical Telescope from December 10-14, 1999. Two of them, 3C 66A and PKS 0735+178, were monitored for 4 nights for a total integration time of 4.75 and 5.5 hours, respectively. Other objects (1Jy 0138-097, H 0414+009, PKS 0823-223, OJ287 and BL Lac) were observed sparsely during the run. Apart from PKS 0823-223 (more polarized than observed in the past), the sources show levels of flux and polarization consistent with results at previous epochs. 3C 66A and PKS 0735+178 were intensively observed during December 11 and 12 and exhibited variability of polarization, both on internight and intranight time scales. Wavelength dependence of polarization has been investigated, as well as circular polarization.     The Orbital Period and Negative Superhumps of the Nova-Like Cataclysmic Variable V378 Pegasi

    A radial velocity study is presented of the cataclysmic variable V378 Pegasi (PG 2337+300). It is found to have an orbital period of 0.13858 +/- 0.00004 d (3.32592 +/- 0.00096 hours). Its spectrum and long-term light curve suggest that V378 Peg is a nova-like variable, with no outbursts. We use the approximate distance and position in the Galaxy of V378 Peg to estimate E(B-V) = 0.095, and use near-infrared magnitudes to calculate a distance of 680 +/- 90 pc and M_V = 4.68 +/- 0.70, consistent with V378 Peg being a nova-like. Time-resolved photometry taken between 2001 and 2009 reveals a period of 0.1346 +/- 0.0004 d (3.23 +/- 0.01 hours). We identify this photometric variability to be negative superhumps, from a precessing, tilted accretion disk. Our repeated measurements of the photometric period of V378 Peg are consistent with this period having been stable between 2001 and 2009, with its negative superhumps showing coherence over as many as hundreds or even thousands of cycles.Comment: 24 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in New Astronom

    The 40s Omega-loop plays a critical role in the stability and the alkaline conformational transition of cytochrome c

    The structural and redox properties of a non-covalent complex reconstituted upon mixing two non-contiguous fragments of horse cytochrome c, the residues 1 - 38 heme-containing N-fragment with the residues 57 - 104 C-fragment, have been investigated. With respect to native cyt c, the complex lacks a segment of 18 residues, corresponding, in the native protein, to an omega ( W)loop region. The fragment complex shows compact structure, native-like alpha-helix content but a less rigid atomic packing and reduced stability with respect to the native protein. Structural heterogeneity is observed at pH 7.0, involving formation of an axially misligated low-spin species and consequent partial displacement of Met80 from the sixth coordination position of the heme-iron. Spectroscopic data suggest that a lysine ( located in the Met80-containing loop, namely Lys72, Lys73, or Lys79) replaces the methionine residue. The residues 1 - 38/57 - 104 fragment complex shows an unusual biphasic alkaline titration characterized by a low (pK(a1)= 6.72) and a high pK(a)-associated state transition (pK(a2)= 8.56); this behavior differs from that of native cyt c, which shows a monophasic alkaline transition ( pK(a)= 8.9). The data indicate that the 40s Omega-loop plays an important role in the stability of cyt c and in ensuring a correct alkaline conformational transition of the protein
