The Legal and the Literary: Cultural Perspectives on Brexit

    Get PDF
The essay introduces a special issue on Brexit. Instead of merely focusing on its legal implications, this issue undertakes an examination of the UK leaving the EU from a law-and-humanities perspective. The legal analysis is therefore complemented by a broader assessment of the social and cultural features of Brexit, also extending over the complexity of the present and the incertitude posed by its future. Brexit is also a matter of reimagination; constitutional and literary issues thus coalesce towards a transdisciplinary dialogue. To this extent, the collected essays engage with Brexlit, i.e. novels and essays, political pamphlets, and other writings prompted by Brexit. The aim is to explore the doubts, fears, and threats that still haunt the UK after leaving the EU, paying particular attention to the development of new narrative strategies and forms capable of reflecting and giving expression to the new Brexit identities

"Designing Identity: Technology, Media and Politics in Complexity"

During historical transitions, it is a common practice to question the boundaries of identity. Indeed it becomes strategically important to analyse and decodify both the new emerging symbols and the discourses on the Self which define the dynamics of identity representation. Since in our contemporary age contradiction and conflict permeate the categories of values and the mechanisms of representation of reality, it is interesting to investigate the following issues: - the ways in which literature connects cultural innovation, new kinds of knowledge, cognitive practice, and the ethical and the moral dimension of civil and social coexistence. If not fully identified, the 'new' takes on the character of the monstrous; - the renewed individual and/or collective narrative logic(s) and its(their) fields of action, as for example social media storytelling or unsettling web-culture phenomena such as digital after-death; - the complexity of contemporary social systems, including migration and terrorist policies which move the concept of inter/multiculturalism further and mark even more intensely a clear conflict with all those cultural key factors that we perceive as belonging to our cultural identity or heritage. Think, for example, about the sociological concept of ‘super-diversity.’ - the role law plays in describing these new collective dynamics in a renewed negotiation between rights and duties, and the necessity to repossess a strong ethical dimension. The panel aims at investigating the ways in which we can shape, enact/re-enact our existence and our being in the contemporary world within the design of culture, intended as a sense-making intellectual framework

«Si deve pertanto osare l’esperimento, tentare la fondazione». Nota sul metodo ipotetico- sperimentale di una religione della ragione

«The Experiment Must Be Undertaken, the Foundation Must Be Attempted». Notes on the Hypothetic-Experimental Method of a Religion of Reason · « The experiment must be undertaken, the foundation must be attempted » : these words testify to the crucial role played by the hypothetic- experimental method in the decisive pages of Religion of Reason chapter 11, where the religious point of view has to legitimate itself towards the sociological one, and religion has to establish its own « foundations ». The fact that the key concept of Grundlegung, in the whole work, only here occurs so frequently shows how Cohen entrusts his « non-foundationalist account of ‘foundations’ » with the task of promoting a « reflexive appropriation of religious contents »

A case of projectile trauma from the medieval Poulton Chapel, Cheshire, the United Kingdom

Excavations at the medieval cemetery of Poulton Chapel, Cheshire, have uncovered over 900 articulated human skeletal remains, with numbers predicted to reach as high as 1500 as excavations continue. The demographics of this archaeological site is typical of a medieval rural assemblage. However, SK535 provides a glimpse into some of the traumatic aspects of medieval life. The excavation of SK535 revealed a middle‐aged adult male around 168 cm in stature. His position of burial was typical of Christian burials with an east‐west orientation, but the positioning of his arms identified that this was not a typical burial. His right arm was flexed at the elbow crossing the thorax, whereas the left arm was in the extended position. This is different from the other arm positions observed at Poulton Chapel. A metal object, identified here as a Type M7 bodkin arrowhead, was recovered from underneath the right arm, from within the thorax. This arrowhead was potentially armour piercing, and the type was commonly used during the 12th–13th century. Radiocarbon dates obtained for SK535 coincide with the time of the use of this arrowhead. Following the initial assessment, the only other instance of trauma identified in SK535 was a healed transverse fracture to the right distal ulna. Due to the location of Poulton Chapel in Cheshire, SK535 could have been wounded by an arrow carrying the M7 bodkin during English‐Welsh border skirmishes, which occurred frequently during this time period. The demographic profile of this individual indicates a possible professional fighter of the medieval period; however, no firm skeletal evidence of occupation could be provided. Nonetheless, this case study not only highlights the violence experienced during the medieval period but also indicates the ability for the survival of some traumas
