Silicide formation with bilayers of Pd-Pt, Pd-Ni, and Pt-Ni

Evaporated two-layered thin films of Pd-Ni, Pt-Ni, and Pt-Pd on single-crystal Si have been vacuum annealed in the temperature range 200–900°C. The sequence of films as well as substrate orientation have been varied. The silicide formation has been studied by MeV He + backscattering spectrometry and glancing angle x-ray diffraction. The silicide layers are highly inhomogeneous in the elemental depth distribution for annealing below 600°C. Above 700°C, the distributions become homogeneous. The silicide-substrate interface shows varying sharpness depending upon substrate orientation and evaporation sequence. We suggest the existence of ternary monosilicides of the type Pt1–xPdxSi, Pt1–xNixSi, and Pd1–xNixSi. The Pt1–xPdxSi ternary silicide is stable up to 900°C; the others are not

Growth of Ge Nanoparticles on SiO2/Si interfaces during Annealing of Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposited Thin Films

Cataloged from PDF version of article.Multilayer germanosilicate (Ge:SiO2) films have been grown by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. Each Ge:SiO2 layer is separated by a pure SiO2 layer. The samples were heat treated at 900 degrees C for 15 and 45 min. Transmission electron microscopy investigations show precipitation of particles in the layers of highest Ge concentration. Furthermore there is evidence of diffusion between the layers. This paper focuses mainly on observed growth of Ge particles close to the interface, caused by Ge diffusion from the Ge:SiO2 layer closest to the interface through a pure SiO2 layer and to the interface. The particles grow as spheres in a direction away from the interface. Particles observed after 15 min anneal time are 4 nm in size and are amorphous, while after 45 min anneal time they are 7 nm in size and have a crystalline diamond type Ge structure. Structural and electrical transport properties of superconducting Au{0.7}In{0.3} films: A random array of superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junctions

The structural and superconducting properties of Au{0.7}In{0.3} films, grown by interdiffusion of alternating Au and In layers, have been studied. The films were found to consist of a uniform solid solution of Au{0.9}In{0.1}, with excess In precipitated in the form of In-rich grains of various Au-In phases (with distinct atomic compositions), including intermetallic compounds. As the temperature was lowered, these individual grains became superconducting at a particular transition temperature (Tc), determined primarily by the atomic composition of the grain, before a fully superconducting state of zero resistance was established. From the observed onset Tc, it was inferred that up to three different superconducting phases could have formed in these Au{0.7}In{0.3} films, all of which were embedded in a uniform Au{0.9}In{0.1} matrix. Among these phases, the Tc of a particular one, 0.8 K, is higher than any previously reported for the Au-In system. The electrical transport properties were studied down to low temperatures. The transport results were found to be well correlated with those of the structural studies. The present work suggests that Au{0.7}In{0.3} can be modeled as a random array of superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junctions. The effect of disorder and the nature of the superconducting transition in these Au{0.7}In{0.3} films are discussed.Comment: 8 text pages, 10 figures in one separate PDF file, submitted to PR

Ovarian hormones and reproductive risk factors for breast cancer in premenopausal women: the Norwegian EBBA-I study

BACKGROUND: Ovarian hormones, parity and length of 'menarche-to-first birth' time interval are known risk factors for breast cancer, yet the associations between I 7β\beta-estradiol, progesterone and these reproductive factors remain unclear. METHODS: A total of 204 women (25-35 years) who participated in the Norwegian EBBA-I study collected daily saliva samples for one complete menstrual cycle, and filled in a reproductive history questionnaire. Anthropometry was measured and saliva samples were analyzed for ovarian hormones. Associations between parity, the interval and ovarian hormones, and effects of hormone-related lifestyle factors were studied in linear regression models. RESULTS: Mean age was 30.7 years, and age of menarche 13.1 years. Parous women had on average 1.9 births, and age at first birth was 24.5 years. No association was observed between parity and ovarian steroids. In nulliparous women, higher waist circumference (\ge)77.75 cm) and longer oral contraceptive (OC) use (\ge)3 years) were associated with higher levels of I 7β\beta-estradiol. Short (13.5 years) 'menarche-to-first birth' interval was associated with higher overall mean (Ptrend_{trend} = 0.029), 47% higher maximum peak and 30% higher mid-cycle levels of I 7β\beta-estradiol. We observed a 2.6% decrease in overall mean salivary I 7β\beta-estradiol with each 1-year increase in the interval. CONCLUSIONS: Nulliparous women may be more susceptible to lifestyle factors, abdominal overweight and past OC use, influencing metabolic and hormonal profiles and thus breast cancer risk. Short time between 'menarche-to-first birth' is linked to higher ovarian hormone levels among regularly cycling women, suggesting that timing of first birth is related to fecundity.Human Evolutionary Biolog

Impact of parasites on salmon recruitment in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean

Parasites may have large effects on host population dynamics, marine fisheries and conservation, but a clear elucidation of their impact is limited by a lack of ecosystem-scale experimental data. We conducted a meta-analysis of replicated manipulative field experiments concerning the influence of parasitism by crustaceans on the marine survival of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.). The data include 24 trials in which tagged smolts (totalling 283 347 fish; 1996-2008) were released as paired control and parasiticide-treated groups into 10 areas of Ireland and Norway. All experimental fish were infectionfree when released into freshwater, and a proportion of each group was recovered as adult recruits returning to coastal waters 1 or more years later. Treatment had a significant positive effect on survival to recruitment, with an overall effect size (odds ratio) of 1.29 that corresponds to an estimated loss of 39 per cent (95% CI: 18-55%) of adult salmon recruitment. The parasitic crustaceans were probably acquired during early marine migration in areas that host large aquaculture populations of domesticated salmon, which elevate local abundances of ectoparasitic copepods-particularly Lepeophtheirus salmonis. These results provide experimental evidence from a large marine ecosystem that parasites can have large impacts on fish recruitment, fisheries and conservation

    A COMPARISON BETWEEN 1.5µm PHOTOLUMINESCENCE FROM Er-DOPED Si-RICH SiO2 FILMS AND (Er,Ge) CO-DOPED SiO2 FILMS

photoluminescence, nanoclusters, erbium, Transmission electron microscopyWe have studied the 1.5 µm photoluminescence (PL) from Er ions after annealing two different sample sets in the temperature range 500 °C to 1100 °C. The different sample sets were made by magnetron sputtering from composite targets of Si+SiO2+Er and Ge+SiO2+Er respectively for the different sample sets. The annealing induces Si - and Ge-nanoclusters respectively in the different film sets. The PL peak reaches its maximum intensity after annealing at 700 °C for samples with Ge nanoclusters and after annealing at 800 °C for samples with Si. No luminescence from nanoclusters was detected in neither sample sets. This is interpreted as an energy transfer from the nanocluster to Er atoms. Transmission electron microscopy shows that after annealing to the respective temperature yielding the maximum PL intensity both the Ge and Si clusters are non-crystalline. Here we mainly compare the spectral shape of Er luminescence emitted in these different nanostructured matrixes. The PL spectral shapes are clearly different and witness a different local environment for the Er ions
