    Is the Scottish population living dangerously? Prevalence of multiple risk factors: the Scottish Health Survey 2003

    <b>Background:</b> Risk factors are often considered individually, we aimed to investigate the prevalence of combinations of multiple behavioural risk factors and their association with socioeconomic determinants.<p></p> <b>Methods:</b> Multinomial logistic regression was used to model the associations between socioeconomic factors and multiple risk factors from data in the Scottish Health Survey 2003. Prevalence of five main behavioural risk factors - smoking alcohol, diet, overweight/obesity, and physical inactivity, and the odds in relation to demographic, individual and area socioeconomic factors.<p></p> <b>Results:</b> Full data were available on 6,574 subjects (80.7% of the survey sample). Nearly the whole adult population (97.5%) reported to have at least one behavioural risk factor; while 55% have three or more risk factors; and nearly 20% have four or all five risk factors. The most important determinants for having four or five multiple risk factors were low educational attainment which conferred around a 3-fold increased odds compared to high education; and residence in the most deprived communities (relative to least deprived) which had greater than 3-fold increased odds.<p></p> <b>Conclusions:</b> The prevalence of multiple behavioural risk factors was high and the prevalence of absence of all risk factors very low. These behavioural patterns were socioeconomically determined. Policy to address factors needs to be joined up and better consider underlying socioeconomic circumstances.<p></p&gt

    Computing stationary free-surface shapes in microfluidics

    A finite-element algorithm for computing free-surface flows driven by arbitrary body forces is presented. The algorithm is primarily designed for the microfluidic parameter range where (i) the Reynolds number is small and (ii) force-driven pressure and flow fields compete with the surface tension for the shape of a stationary free surface. The free surface shape is represented by the boundaries of finite elements that move according to the stress applied by the adjacent fluid. Additionally, the surface tends to minimize its free energy and by that adapts its curvature to balance the normal stress at the surface. The numerical approach consists of the iteration of two alternating steps: The solution of a fluidic problem in a prescribed domain with slip boundary conditions at the free surface and a consecutive update of the domain driven by the previously determined pressure and velocity fields. ...Comment: Revised versio

    Testing the daytime oxidizing capacity of the troposphere: 1994 OH field campaign at the Izaña Observatory, Tenerife

    A field campaign was carried out during May 1994 at the Izaña station, Tenerife. This campaign was part of the program Environment and Climate sponsored by the European Commission to study the influence of European emissions on the oxidizing capacity of a clean tropospheric environment. Daytime and also nighttime measurements were made, covering the OH as well as the NO3 chemistry. This paper presents the OH measurements taken with a multipass optical absorption spectrometer (MOAS) and discusses the daytime chemistry in a statistical and therefore more preliminary way. All relevant parameters influencing the OH concentration were monitored. From the data the two main contributions to the OH production can clearly be discerned and are given by the primary production following the ozone photolysis and the O(1D)-H2O reaction and by the catalytic reactions of NOx in the recycling process. The latter processes prove to contribute a dominant part to the OH concentration. The measurements of the nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHC) especially of the biogenics, indicate a considerable influence of the NMHC on the absolute values of the OH concentration at Tenerife.This work has been financially supported by the European Commission (grant EV5V-CT93-0321), by the DFG, and by the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie, which is gratefully acknowledged

    Dopant-induced crossover from 1D to 3D charge transport in conjugated polymers

    The interplay between inter- and intra-chain charge transport in bulk polythiophene in the hopping regime has been clarified by studying the conductivity as a function of frequency (up to 3 THz), temperature and doping level. We present a model which quantitatively explains the observed crossover from quasi-one-dimensional transport to three-dimensional hopping conduction with increasing doping level. At high frequencies the conductivity is dominated by charge transport on one-dimensional conducting chains.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Nonlinear optical spectroscopy and two-photon excited fluorescence spectroscopy reveal the excited states of fluorophores embedded in a beetle's elytra

The final version is available via the DOI in this record.Upon illumination by ultraviolet light, many animal species emit light through fluorescence processes arising from fluorophores embedded within their biological tissues. Fluorescence studies in living organisms are however relatively scarce and so far limited to the linear regime. Multiphoton excitation fluorescence analyses as well as nonlinear optical techniques offer unique possibilities to investigate the effects of the local environment on the excited states of fluorophores. Herein, these techniques are applied for the first time to study of the naturally controlled fluorescence in insects. The case of the male Hoplia coerulea beetle is investigated because the scales covering the beetle's elytra are known to possess an internal photonic structure with embedded fluorophores, which controls both the beetle's coloration and the fluorescence emission. An intense two-photon excitation fluorescence signal is observed, the intensity of which changes upon contact with water. A third-harmonic generation signal is also detected, the intensity of which depends on the light polarization state. The analysis of these nonlinear optical and fluorescent responses unveils the multi-excited states character of the fluorophore molecules embedded in the beetle's elytra.     A unified approach for the solution of the Fokker-Planck equation

    This paper explores the use of a discrete singular convolution algorithm as a unified approach for numerical integration of the Fokker-Planck equation. The unified features of the discrete singular convolution algorithm are discussed. It is demonstrated that different implementations of the present algorithm, such as global, local, Galerkin, collocation, and finite difference, can be deduced from a single starting point. Three benchmark stochastic systems, the repulsive Wong process, the Black-Scholes equation and a genuine nonlinear model, are employed to illustrate the robustness and to test accuracy of the present approach for the solution of the Fokker-Planck equation via a time-dependent method. An additional example, the incompressible Euler equation, is used to further validate the present approach for more difficult problems. Numerical results indicate that the present unified approach is robust and accurate for solving the Fokker-Planck equation.Comment: 19 page

    Tedera: From a Promising Novel Species to a Commercial Pasture Option for Mediterranean Southern Australia

    Tedera (Bituminaria bituminosa var. albomarginata and var. crassiuscula) is a traditional forage species used for centuries in the Canary Islands (Méndez and Fernández 1990), that has increasingly attracted interest from researchers in regions with Mediterranean-type climates from Spain, Italy, Israel, Greece, Portugal, Morocco, Turkey and Australia. In 2000, Australian pasture researchers started a large and systematic screening process that evaluated about 720 species of exotic and native legumes, grasses and herbs for adaptation and productivity in Mediterranean and temperate environments (Real et al. 2011). Tedera was one of the few novel perennial legumes to show potential for domestication (Real et al. 2008; Real et al. 2011). Now an international multidisciplinary team has come together to take tedera forward towards commercial adoption by farmers in Mediterranean-type environments. This paper provides a technical update and discussion on all research aspects conducted by the tedera research team up to February 2013

    Tenfold Magnetoconductance in a Non-Magnetic Metal Film

    We present magnetoconductance (MC) measurements of homogeneously disordered Be films whose zero field sheet conductance (G) is described by the Efros-Shklovskii hopping law G(T)=(2e2/h)exp(To/T)1/2G(T)=(2e^2/h)\exp{-(T_o/T)^{1/2}}. The low field MC of the films is negative with G decreasing 200% below 1 T. In contrast the MC above 1 T is strongly positive. At 8 T, G increases 1000% in perpendicular field and 500% in parallel field. In the simpler parallel case, we observe {\em field enhanced} variable range hopping characterized by an attenuation of ToT_o via the Zeeman interaction.Comment: 9 pages including 5 figure
