Changes on the nanostructure of cementitius calcium silicate hydrates (C-S-H) induced by aqueous carbonation
The nanostructure of the main binding phase of the hydrated cements, the calcium silicate hydrates (C-S-H), and their structural changes due to aqueous carbonation have been characterized using TEM, nitrogen physisorption, and SAXS. Synthetic C-S-H has been used for this purpose. Two different morphologies were identified, similar to the high density and low density C-S-H types. When submitting the sample to a CO 2 flux, the low density phase was completely carbonated. The carbonation by-products, calcium carbonate, and silica gel were also identified and characterized. The precipitation of the silica gel increased the specific surface area from 95 to 132 m 2/g, and its structure, formed by particles of ~5 nm typical radius, was observed by small angle X-ray scattering. In addition, the resistance of the high density C-S-H to carbonation is reported, and the passivating effect of the precipitated calcium carbonate is also discussed. Finally, the results have been compared with carbonation features observed in Portland cement carbonated experimentally at downhole conditions.
Effect of Water Activity on Reaction Kinetics and Intergranular Transport: Insights from the Ca(OH) 2 + MgCO 3 → CaCO 3 + Mg(OH) 2 Reaction at 1·8 GPa
The kinetics of the irreversible reaction Ca(OH)2 + MgCO3 → CaCO3 + Mg(OH)2 were investigated at high pressures and temperatures relevant to metamorphic petrology, using both in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and post-mortem analysis of reaction rim growth on recovered samples. Reaction kinetics are found to strongly depend on water content; comparable bulk-reaction kinetics are obtained under water-saturated (excess water, c. 10 wt %) and under intermediate (0·1–1 wt % water) conditions when temperature is increased by c. 300 K. In contrast, similar reaction kinetics were observed at ∼673 K and 823 K between intermediate and dry experiments, respectively, where dry refers to a set of experiments with water activity below 1·0 (no free water), as buffered by the CaO–Ca(OH)2 assemblage. Given the activation energies at play, this gap—corresponding to the loss of no more than 1 wt % of water by the assemblage—leads to a difference of several orders of magnitude in reaction kinetics at a given temperature. Further analysis, at the microscopic scale, of the intermediate and dry condition samples, shows that intergranular transport of calcium controls the reaction progress. Grain boundary diffusivities could be retrieved from the classic treatment of reaction rim growth rate. In turn, once modeled, this rate was used to fit the bulk kinetic data derived from X-ray powder diffraction, offering an alternative means to derive calcium diffusivity data. Based on a comparison with effective grain boundary data for Ca and Mg from the literature, it is inferred that both dry and intermediate datasets are consistent with a water-saturated intergranular medium with different levels of connectivity. The very high diffusivity of Ca in the CaCO3 + Mg(OH)2 rims, in comparison with that of Mg in enstatite rims found by earlier workers, emphasizes the prominent role of the interactions between diffusing species and mineral surfaces in diffusion kinetics. Furthermore, we show that the addition of water is likely to change the relative diffusivity of Mg and Ca in carbonate aggregates. From a qualitative point of view, we confirm, in a carbonate-bearing system, that small water content variations within the 0–1 wt % range have tremendous effects on both intergranular transport mechanisms and kinetics. We also propose that the water content dependent diffusivity of major species (Mg, Ca) in low-porosity metamorphic rocks is strongly dependent on the interaction between diffusing species and mineral surfaces. This parameter, which will vary from one rock-type to another, needs also to considered when extrapolating (P, T, t, xH2O) laboratory diffusion data to metamorphic processes
Presentation of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus 2 Infection as Cholestatic Jaundice in Two Healthy Adolescents

We describe 2 adolescents with cholestasis and hepatitis with mild presentation of severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 lacking typical symptoms. Our intention is to raise index of suspicion for testing and protective equipment use
Lateral variations in the signature of earthquake‐generated deposits in Lake Iznik, NW Turkey
Using lake-sediment cores to document past seismicity requires a comprehen- sive understanding of possible lateral variations in depositional processes. This study aims to reveal the lateral variations in earthquake-induced event deposits throughout Lake Iznik, a large lake located on the middle strand of the North Anatolian Fault. Based on stratigraphic, sedimentological and geochemical anal- yses of 14 sediment cores from two subbasins across the lake, five different types of event deposits (T1–T5) were identified and characterised. One event deposit type (T5) is restricted to a delta mouth, characterised by the occurrence of au- thigenic Fe-Mn carbonates and interpreted to result from flood events. The four other types of event deposits are characterised by their synchronicity between cores and their age consistency with historical earthquakes and are interpreted to be likely generated by earthquakes. The locally prominent 1065 CE historical earthquake that ruptured the sub-lacustrine Iznik Fault produced at least three different types of event deposits. One deposit type (T2) is only observed for this very local earthquake, implying that the type of event deposit might also depend on ground-motion parameters. At the lake scale, the occurrence of various event deposits depends on the flow distance from the source of sediment destabilisa- tions to the coring site

Factors Influencing Mental Health Service Utilization by Children with Serious Emotional and Behavioral Disturbance: Results from the LAMS Study
The official published article is available online at http://doi.org/10.1176/appi.ps.62.6.650.OBJECTIVE: To describe service utilization of a cohort of children with emotional and behavioral disorders who visited outpatient mental health clinics in four Midwest cities. METHOD: Data come from the Longitudinal Assessment of Manic Symptoms (LAMS) Study. 707 youth (ages 6–12 years) and their parents completed diagnostic assessments, demographic information and an assessment of mental health service utilization. Analyses examined the relationship of demographics, diagnoses, impairment, and comorbidity to the type and level of services utilized. RESULTS: Service utilization is multimodal with half of the youth receiving both outpatient and school services during their lifetime. Non-need factors including age, sex, race, and insurance, were related to types of services used. Youth diagnosed with a bipolar spectrum disorder had higher utilization of inpatient services and two or more services at one time compared to youth diagnosed with depressive or disruptive disorders. More than half of youth diagnosed with bipolar or depressive disorders had received both medication and therapy during their lifetime whereas for youth diagnosed with a disruptive disorder therapy only was more common. Impairment and comorbidity were not related to service utilization. CONCLUSIONS: Use of mental health services for children begins at a very young age and occurs in multiple service sectors. Type of service use is related to insurance and race/ethnicity, underscoring the need for research on treatment disparities. Contrary to findings from results based on administrative data, medication alone was infrequent. However, the reasonably low use of combination therapy suggests that clinicians and families need to be educated on the effectiveness of multimodal treatment
Diagnosis and Complications of Cushing's Syndrome: A Consensus Statement
In October 2002, a workshop was held in Ancona, Italy, to reach a Consensus on the management of Cushing's syndrome. The workshop was organized by the University of Ancona and sponsored by the Pituitary Society, the European Neuroendocrine Association, and the Italian Society of Endocrinology. Invited international participants included almost 50 leading endocrinologists with specific expertise in the management of Cushing's syndrome. The consensus statement on diagnostic criteria and the diagnosis and treatment of complications of this syndrome reached at the workshop is hereby summarized
Demographic and clinical correlates of autism symptom domains and autism spectrum diagnosis
Demographic and clinical factors may influence assessment of autism symptoms. This study evaluated these correlates and also examined whether social communication and interaction and restricted/repetitive behavior provided unique prediction of autism spectrum disorder diagnosis. We analyzed data from 7352 siblings included in the Interactive Autism Network registry. Social communication and interaction and restricted/repetitive behavior symptoms were obtained using caregiver-reports on the Social Responsiveness Scale. Demographic and clinical correlates were covariates in regression models predicting social communication and interaction and restricted/repetitive behavior symptoms. Logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic curve analyses evaluated the incremental validity of social communication and interaction and restricted/repetitive behavior domains over and above global autism symptoms. Autism spectrum disorder diagnosis was the strongest correlate of caregiver-reported social communication and interaction and restricted/repetitive behavior symptoms. The presence of comorbid diagnoses also increased symptom levels. Social communication and interaction and restricted/repetitive behavior symptoms provided significant, but modest, incremental validity in predicting diagnosis beyond global autism symptoms. These findings suggest that autism spectrum disorder diagnosis is by far the largest determinant of quantitatively measured autism symptoms. Externalizing (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and internalizing (anxiety) behavior, low cognitive ability, and demographic factors may confound caregiver-report of autism symptoms, potentially necessitating a continuous norming approach to the revision of symptom measures. Social communication and interaction and restricted/repetitive behavior symptoms may provide incremental validity in the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder
