In this study, the differentiation status of preschool children's adaptation to school according to their relationship with teachers was examined. The study participants consisted of 326 children aged 60-72 months and 21 preschool teachers in different preschool educational institutions affiliated to the Provincial Directorate of National Education in Konya, Turkey. The School Adaptation Teacher Assessment Scale and Teacher-Student Relationship Scale were utilized to collect the research data. In the evaluation of the research data, firstly, teacher-child relationship scores were divided into groups for cluster analysis: conflictual/non-conflictual, dependent/ independent, and close/distant teacher-child relationship. The data gathered were analyzed using the independent-samples t-test. The results of the study revealed that the level of school adaptation of the children who had close, non-conflictual, and independent relationships with their teachers differed significantly from that of children who had distant, conflictual, and dependent relationships with their teachers. Positive teacher-child relationships reflected positively on the level of the child's school adaptation level. Teachers should establish close relationships with children in order to facilitate their adaptation to the school in the preschool period

This article deals with the exergy analysis and evaluation of broccoli in three different drying systems. The effects of drying air temperature on the exergy destruction, exergy efficiency, and exergetic improvement potential of the drying process were investigated. The exergy destruction rate for the drying chamber increased with the rise in the drying air temperature at 1.5 m/s, both in the tray and the heat pump dryer. The highest exergy efficiency value was obtained as 90.86% in the fluid bed dryer in comparison to the other two drying systems and the improvement potential rate was the highest in the heat pump dryer during drying of broccoli at the drying air temperature of 45°C and the drying air velocity of 1.0 m/s. © 2010 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC

The knowledge and attitudes of breast self-examination and mammography in a group of women in a rural area in western Turkey

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer appears to be a disease of both the developing and developed worlds. Among Turkish women, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. The aims of this cross-sectional study were to determine levels of knowledge about breast cancer and to evaluate health beliefs concerning the model that promotes breast self- examination (BSE) and mammography in a group of women aged 20–64 in a rural area of western Turkey. METHODS: 244 women were recruited by means of cluster sampling in this study. The questionnaire consisted of sociodemographic variables, a risk factors and signs of breast cancer form and the adapted version of Champion's Health Belief Model Scale (CHBMS). Bivariate correlation analysis, Chi square test, Mann-Whitney U test and logistic regression analysis were performed throughout the data analysis. RESULTS: The mean age of the women was 37.7 ± 13.7. 49.2% of women were primary school graduates, 67.6% were married. Although 76.6% of the women in this study reported that they had heard or read about breast cancer, our study revealed that only 56.1% of them had sufficient knowledge of breast cancer, half of whom had acquired the information from health professionals. Level of breast cancer knowledge was the only variable significantly associated with the BSE and mammography practice (p = 0.011, p = 0.007). BSE performers among the study group were more likely to be women who exhibited higher confidence and perceived greater benefits from BSE practice, and those who perceived fewer barriers to BSE performance and possessed knowledge of breast cancer. CONCLUSION: By using the CHBMS constructs for assessment, primary health care providers can more easily understand the beliefs that influence women's BSE and mammography practice

The purpose of the study was to examine the validity and reliability of Social Emotional Well Being and Resilience Scale (PERIK) to measure so-cial-emotional well-being and resilience in Turkish preschool children. Two independent samples of four to six year children were used. Sample 1 served as the calibration sample to explore the most appropriate structure of the PERIK-T (227 children). Sample 2 served as the validation sample (227 children). A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to test the stability of the original factor structure of the six-factor PERIK. Concluding that 36 item PERIK did not fit the data obtained from Turkish sample, an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted to further explore the factor structure of the PERIK that better represented the sample data. The results of EFA suggested a six-factor 30 item solution. This 30 item model was subsequently cross-validated with the second sample (n= 227). The results of the second CFA showed a good fit to the data. Scale scores showed a relatively high internal consistency and item-total correlations ranging from .47 to .76. To provide evidence for criterion-related validity of the PERIK, reported differences or relations in terms of gender and age are referenced

WOS: 000263703200011Recently, the interest in olive leaf has increased due to its high phenolic content. It has a high potential for industrial exploitation in food industry and the main process in olive leaf treatment is drying. Drying affects the product quality and is an energy-intensive process, so the use of heat pumps in drying processes that have low operating cost has attracted the attention of the investigators. In this study, response surface methodology was used to optimize operating conditions of drying of olive leaves in a pilot-scale heat pump conveyor dryer. The independent variables were air temperature, air velocity, and process time, and the responses were total phenolic content and antioxidant activity loss, final moisture content, and exergetic efficiency. Optimum operating conditions were found to be temperature of 53.43C, air velocity of 0.64 m/s, process time of 288.32min. At this optimum point, total phenolic content loss, total antioxidant activity loss, final moisture content, and exergetic efficiency were found to be 9.77%, 44.25%, 6.0% (w.b.), and 69.55%, respectively.Ege University Scientific ResearchEge University [2007/MUH/30]; Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK)Turkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Arastirma Kurumu (TUBITAK)This study is a part of the M.
