This paper studies the internationalization possibilities of Zaask into Brazil and the USA. Through a PESTLE analysis the countries’ conditions are determined, while an industry analysis rates its attractiveness and a company and competitors analysis verify the resources and advantages of Zaask in the markets. The markets are attractive, but the company lacks at the moment the capacity to pursue this expansion. It is recommended that Zaask pursues a differentiation focus strategy in both markets with the development of new resources, but also consider other potential markets

Aims: The aims of this study were to analyse the changes in anxiety and depression symptoms from early pregnancy to 30 months postpartum according to gender and parity. Method: 129 couples (N = 258) recruited from an obstetrics unit completed self-report measures of anxiety and depression at each pregnancy trimester, childbirth, 3 and 30 months postpartum. Using multilevel modelling, piecewise dyadic growth curve models were performed, assessing time, gender and parity as predictors of anxiety and depression symptoms. Results: Anxiety and depression symptoms decreased from the rst trimester to 3 months postpartum and increased from 3 to 30 months postpartum, returning to the baseline levels in the overall sample. The symptoms were positively correlated within-dyad; in a given time point when a partner reported more symptoms, the other reported more symptoms as well. Changes in anxiety and depression symptoms over time were di erent according to gender and parity, especially from 3 to 30 months postpartum. Primiparous women revealed low stable symptoms, whereas multiparous women revealed the steepest symptoms increase (in comparison to primiparous men and women and multiparous men). Conclusions: This study corroborates the literature considering that the transition to parenthood can last until the child’s age of 2 or 3 years. Results point out that the risk for anxiety and depression symptoms increasing over the postpartum period is greater for multiparous and lesser for primiparous women. Future studies should explore the factors that contribute to the high risk of symptoms increase over the postpartum period for multiparous women. Screening and intervention should target couples and not only women.PTDC/SAU/SAP/116738/2010info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Currently, it becomes fundamental that enterprises combine their financial and economic objectives with the questions related to citizenship, business ethics and environmental preservation, and that they recognize the value of their Corporate Social Responsibility in order to deal with the constant challenges confronting them and maintaining a “positive image” with is Stakeholders. The present investigation focuses on the study of Corporate Social Responsibility, specifically on the relation between Perceptions of Social Responsibility (economic, legal, ethic and discretionary towards employees and discretionary towards the community dimensions) and age, sex and seniority variables of the employees. To measure the variables under study, the Corporate Citizenship Scale was used, being applied to an 106 employees sample from a retail sector company. The final results partially support the relation between some Social Responsibility dimensions and the variables sex and age of the employees. At the end, some considerations about future investigation proposals and limitations of this study are stated

Geopolymers as infill material for conservation of azulejos

The restoration materials currently used to fill gaps in architectural historical azulejos (e.g. lime or organic resin pastes) usually show serious drawbacks in terms of compatibility, effectiveness and durability. The existing solutions do not fully protect azulejos in outdoor conditions and frequently result in further deterioration. Geopolymers can be a potential solution for azulejo lacunae infill given the chemical-mineralogical similitude to the ceramic body, and also the durability and versatile range of physical properties that can be obtained through the manipulation of their formulation and curing conditions. This work presents and discusses the viability of the use of geopolymeric pastes to fill lacunae in azulejos or to act as “cold” cast ceramic tile surrogates reproducing missing azulejo fragments. The formulation of geopolymers, namely the type of activators, the aluminosilicate source, the amount of water (to meet adequate workability requirements) and curing conditions were studied. The need for post-curing desalination was also considered envisaging their application in the restoration of outdoor architectural historical azulejos frequently exposed to adverse environmental conditions. The possible advantages and disadvantages of the use of geopolymers in the conservation of azulejos are also discussed. Several techniques were used to study the chemical and physical behavior of geopolymers, namely FT-IR, XRD, MIP, SEM-EDS, WDXRF, electrical conductivity, open porosity, bending strength, adhesion strength, water vapour permeability, thermal expansion and hydric expansion. The results indicate that geopolymers are a promising material for restoration of azulejos, exhibiting some properties, such as adhesion to the ceramic substrate, higher than inorganic materials used nowadays, such as aerial lime based pastes

Molecular mechanisms of disiccation tolerance in Fucus

Intertidal algae (brown, red and green) are three understudied and independent multicellular lineages possessing related intolerant and desiccation tolerant species, making them good models for desiccation tolerance research. Recent focus on distribution of Fucus vesiculosus under climate change led us to determine the upper thermal limits of this brown algae, using physiological indicators and gene expression responses to describe the induction and thermal characteristics of the heat-shock response in diverse populations. Ambient temperatures were poor predictors of the heat-stress experienced by intertidal algae, instead the microhabitats created by the algal canopy modulated the local thermal environment and influenced the stress response. Surprisingly, in the hottest microhabitat algae appeared to be protected from thermal stress by fast and intense desiccation. Proteomic research in brown algae has recently been facilitated by genomic resources, complete genome sequencing of model species and large-scale transcriptomic resources from Fucus species, and by technical advances in work on organisms with similar interfering compounds. We tested and optimized a protein extraction protocol suitable for intertidal Fucus algae and used it to investigate differential expression of proteins in response to desiccation, both by conventional 2DE and by DIGE. No significant changes of the protein profiles were detected after desiccation or rehydration, suggesting the importance of constitutive tolerance mechanisms, minimizing the metabolic cost of gene expression, while the desiccated state provides protection against heat stress. Studies of distinct field environments (desiccation-prone or –protected), of sequential emersion stress exposure and of laboratory desiccation under controlled conditions, all failed to identify robust protein expression changes attributable to desiccation tolerance. We characterized the first extractable proteome of F. vesiculosus by LC-MS/MS identification and annotation against brown algal protein databases, with considerable success despite limited functional annotation in brown algae proteins, and the presence of multiple proteins in some spots.

The effect of excessive glutamate release on neuronal fitness, hyperactivity, and locomotor performance in a Drosophila model of Alzheimer’s Disease

Recent studies have shown that ectopic expression of the human Aβ42 (amyloid beta peptide) induces cell competition in the brain of a Drosophila model of Alzheimer’s Disease. Neurons that are less fit upregulate low fitness markers such as azot and FlowerLoseB, activating pathways that culminate in their death, which has surprisingly positive effects. These unfit neurons correspond at least in part to Aβ42-induced hyperactive neurons which localize to brain areas exhibiting large amounts of glutamate, issues that are also common in the brains of patients but remain not well understood. In this project, our aim was to uncover the relationship between glutamate accumulation and aberrant neuronal activity and to understand if neuronal silencing could rescue impaired locomotor activity seen in Aβ-expressing flies. We also aimed to understand if excess glutamate induces the upregulation of azot and FlowerLoseB in this context, since it is known that glutamate excitotoxicity contributes to neuronal death. We could not find an effective strategy for neuronal silencing that improves the locomotor performance of flies, nor establish a reliable model for the relationship between hyperactivity and excessive glutamate. Silencing hyperactive neurons through different strategies did not result in changes in glutamate levels and downregulating glutamate signalling with different RNAi lines against DVGLUT showed signs of increased hyperactivity, which would go against what is predicted in literature, but was not a reliable outcome. However, by treating AD model flies with memantine, a glutamate antagonist, we found an upregulation in azot and FlowerLoseB expression, which points to a role of excessive glutamate in modulating cell fitness in neurons and could provide further insights for the mechanisms of action behind the success of this drug in patients

Optimizing rearing and welfare in Senegalese sole (Solea senegalesensis) broodstock: effect of ambient light intensity and handling time on stress response

Broodstock rearing conditions and handling procedures should be optimized in aquaculture species in order to benefit fish welfare and guarantee optimal conditions for spawning. In teleosts, basal cortisol levels display daily rhythms, oscillating along the 24 h of the day. In this sense, handling fish at different moments of the day may lead to different stress responses. The present study aimed at investigating the optimal rearing conditions for Senegalese sole broodstock, considering ambient light intensity and handling time. The optimal light intensity (50, 100 or 200 lx) was investigated by measuring fish cortisol levels and monitoring locomotor activity rhythms under each intensity tested. Results showed a significant increase in cortisol levels of fish exposed to 200 lx, when compared to values obtained under 100 lx, accompanied by changes in locomotor activity rhythms in both tanks under study. These results suggested that 200 lx may be too high as light intensity for this species, whereas 100 lx seems to be more adequate. Also, daily rhythms of stress response were investigated in breeders from different origins (Wild and first generation, G1). Basal cortisol levels and cortisol stress response after an acute stressor (air exposure) were monitored at two distinct moments of the day (Mid-Light and Mid-Dark). Basal levels were higher during the day in the wild group, while G1 fish seemed to have lost the daily fluctuations in basal cortisol plasma levels, as well as their daily rhythms of locomotor activity. Both groups showed lower stress responses during night-time, an indication that this is an adequate period of the day to handle this species. Senegalese sole breeders born in captivity presented more pronounced stress responses when compared to wild fish, reflecting their different life history in terms of stress challenges.FP7/SME/2008/1; UID/Multi/04326/2019; DL 57/2016/CP1361/CT0007; DL 57/2016/CP1361/CT0033info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
