Some Critical Reflections on Lifelong Learning Policy in Turkey

    Get PDF
This paper discusses the Lifelong Learning Strategy document which was on the agenda during the European Union harmonization process of Turkey. The public policies in the document, regarding non-formal and adult education, will be analyzed. Lifelong Learning strategy became a current issue in the last stage of neoliberal transformation of education and occurs within the context of neoliberal transformation which began many years ago in the educational field. At the same time, Lifelong Learning also contains some dimensions which strengthen liberalization and commercialization in formal education. Neoliberal transformation of education has been expressed through “structured adjustment program,” directives of the World Bank imposed over thirty years and through the European Union”s “harmonization” process enforced steadily within the past 10 years. During this process, although transformation of formal education was given priority and the adult education field kept its character with the globalization discourse, terms such as “learning society” and “knowledge society” were imposed, while commodification in adult and non-formal education fields was not a large factor. Thus market driven vocational training discourses were not regulated properly through non formal education. The strategy document actually was formulated to reorganize this field. This article analyzes the effects of neoliberal globalization over adult education in Turkey, including reflections on the interconnection of this document with general European Lifelong Learning policies

Exact analytical solution to the relativistic Klein-Gordon equation with non-central equal scalar and vector potentials

We present an alternative and simple method for the exact solution of the Klein-Gordon equation in the presence of the non-central equal scalar and vector potentials by using Nikiforov-Uvarov (NU) method. The exact bound state energy eigenvalues and corresponding eigenfunctions are obtained for a particle bound in a potential of V(r,θ)=αr+βr2sin2θ+γcosθr2sin2θV(r,\theta) = \frac{\alpha}{r} + \frac{\beta}{r^2\sin ^2\theta} + \gamma \frac{\cos \theta}{r^2\sin ^2\theta} type.Comment: 12 pages, accepted for publication in Journal of Mathematical Physic

Psychiatric Disorders in Children and Adolescents with Epilepsy

    Get PDF
Epilepsy is a chronic disease with a high morbidity. Many recent studies have shown that psychiatric disorders are commonly encountered in children and adolescents with epilepsy. Depression, anxiety disorders and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are among the most common psychiatric disorders. Many factors, including demographic variables, epilepsy related factors and psychosocial factors, have been suggested to have a role on the development of psychiatric disorders in epilepsy. In the management of psychiatric comorbidities, cooperation between disciplines, education of the patient and family and psychosocial support are of vital importance. Recent studies have shown that some psychotropic agents can be used with a generally high safety and efficacy in children and adolescents with epilepsy

This study aims to examine general trends in the postgraduate thesis on sexual education carried out in Turkey. Document analysis as one of the qualitative research methods was used in the study. Thesis were obtained by searching “sexual education” keyword in National Thesis Center of YOK (Turkey Higher Education Council). Based on the search, 17 theses between the years of 1990 and 2018 were obtained and included in the study. Thesis were examined with content analysis based on certain criteria including year, university, institute, department, title of thesis supervisor, research method, data collection tool, data analysis method, sample group, research subject and province. Results were presented with tables and figures showing the frequencies and percentages. Results showed that most of thesis were carried out in Institute of Educational Sciences and department of psychology. Quantitative research method and scales were the most frequently used research method and data collection tool. Mostly, sample group of thesis consisted of teachers.  Article visualizations

    Students' awareness of reading strategies

Cataloged from PDF version of article. This study investigated (a) the university students’ existing reading strategy repertoires, (b) the impact of instruction in top-down reading strategies on their strategic performance, (c) the strategies that students were able to apply in their reading processes, and (d) the relationship between the students’ reported frequency of strategy use and the employment of strategies in their reading practice. The study was conducted with 20 intermediate level students and their classroom teacher in the School of Foreign Languages at Erciyes University in the spring semester of 2006. After the first administration of the Reading Strategy Questionnaire, a threeweek explicit strategy instruction in top-down reading strategies was provided. Following the treatment, the same questionnaire was administered a second time in order to determine the effects of the consciousness-raising program. Think-aloud protocols and post-treatment interviews conducted with 5 volunteer students enriched the study with qualitative data. The statistical correlation of the pre- and post-questionnaires showed that there were significant increases in the means of top-down strategies after the treatment while a slight decrease occurred in students’ bottom-up strategy use. However, think-aloud protocols demonstrated that students tended to use bottom-up strategies more in their reading practice. These findings were also supported by the interviews.Kantarcı, FevziyeM.S
