    The usefulness of chelation therapy for the remission of symptoms caused by previous treatment with mercury-containing pharmaceuticals: a case report

    Introduction: A great deal of data regarding the toxicology of mercury has been recently reported. Although the most common human exposures to mercury are currently mercury vapour from amalgam tooth fillings, methylmercury from seafood and ethylmercury as a preservative in vaccines, in the past mercury compounds have been used in the treatment of syphilis. Case presentation: Mercury intoxication was found in a 67 year-old Italian man affected by neurological symptoms of apparently unknown origin. The patient developed syphilis forty years ago and then underwent therapy with mercurials to treat his chronic bacterial infection. We treated the patient with disodium edetate chelation therapy. Six months after the beginning of the therapy, the patient's neurological symptoms began to decrease, and were completely cured after two years of therapy. Conclusion: This case supports the use of chelation therapy with disodium edetate to remove damages caused by mercury intoxication

    Modifying material properties within a specific spatial region is a pivotal stage in the fabrication of microelectronic devices. Laser annealing emerges as a compelling technology, offering precise control over the crystalline structure of semiconductor materials and facilitating the activation of doping ions in localized regions. This obviates the necessity for annealing the entire wafer or device. The objective of this review is to comprehensively investigate laser annealing processes specifically targeting the crystallization of amorphous silicon (Si) and silicon carbide (SiC) samples. Silicon finds extensive use in diverse applications, including microelectronics and solar cells, while SiC serves as a crucial material for developing components designed to operate in challenging environments or high-power integrated devices. The review commences with an exploration of the underlying theory and fundamentals of laser annealing techniques. It then delves into an analysis of the most pertinent studies focused on the crystallization of these two semiconductor materials

    Modeling grape taste and mouthfeel from chemical composition

    9openInternationalInternational coauthor/editorThis research aims at predicting sensory proprieties generated by the phenolic fraction (PF) of grapes from chemical composition. Thirty-one grape extracts of different grape lots were obtained by maceration of grapes in hydroalcoholic solution; afterward they were submitted to solid phase extraction. The recovered PFs were reconstituted in a wine model. Subsequently the wine models, containing the PFs, were sensory (taste, mouthfeel) and chemically characterized. Significant sensory differences among the 31 PFs were identified. Sensory variables were predicted from chemical parameters by PLS-regression. Tannin activity and concentration along with mean degree of polymerization were found to be good predictors of dryness, while the concentration of large polymeric pigments seems to be involved in the “sticky” percept and flavonols in the “bitter” taste. Four fully validated PLS-models predicting sensory properties from chemical variables were obtained. Two out of the three dimensions could be satisfactorily modeled.
