Technological change, accident prevention and civil liability
The improvement of accident prevention technology in many fields of social life has spurred new challenges to the doctrinal tools of fault and strict based civil liability in the law of torts. Amid these challenges lies the identification of the proper scope of the respective criteria of liability in a changing factual environment, their suitability as doctrinal tools, as well as their actual application to concrete cases given the amount of information which would be needed to render adequate judgments. Precedents and old laws should be assessed with caution, taking into account the tacit cost-benefit analysis embedded in them, for they may or may not serve the interests of welfare maximization in an environment with constantly renewed accident prevention technology
imposto. O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar o efeito da privatização da empresa pública, (i)
quando a empresa líder é a empresa pública; e (ii) quando a empresa líder é a empresa
privada.
estudados. We consider a market in which a public firm and a private firm compete by deciding,
sequentially, the quantities to be produced. The government imposes a tax on the quantities,
according to a function that is a weighted sum of the welfare and the total revenue obtained by
applying this tax. The aim of this paper is to study the effect of privatization, (i) when the
leader is the public firm; and (ii) when the leader is a private firm. Furthermore, we do a
comparison between the results from the two models
Uncertainty in a mixed duopoly with quadratic costs
In this paper, we consider a mixed market with uncertain demand, involving one
private firm and one public firm with quadratic costs. The model is a two-stage game in which
players choose to make their output decisions either in stage 1 or stage 2. We assume that the demand is unknown until the end of the first stage. We compute the output levels at equilibrium in each possible role. We also determine ex-ante and ex-post firms’ payoff functions
Entre ellos, una especie de simbolismo para una 'eficacia política' manifiesta por la importante función de los espacios de culto en la formación de 'pais-de-santo' para que la religión pueda expandirse, mientras pretende «cambiar la mentalidad política y social» en países industrializados para que las relaciones globales de poder, sobre todo económicas y políticas, sean reconfiguradasThis study focuses on the construction of the 'self' into the 'afro-Brazilian' religions in Portugal from the role of symbolic inversion of the subaltern groups in society and/or in contexts of individual suffering in general, whose performance is developed through cultural expressions of the (re)construction of the world through the difficulties of everyday life. These religions have different formations observable in their rituals in Brazil, including in terms of identity end political assertion of social groups that recognized themselves in 'afro-referenced cultures'. These cults represent, for example, characters of the Brazilian colonial history through its 'spiritual entities'. However, I intend to focus on the manifestations of this process that seems to be the 'new establishment' of the transnationalization of these practices in Portugal, that into the 'new local' tend to reveal new elements. Among them a kind of symbolism for a 'political effectiveness' manifest thought the significance of the formation of 'pais-de-santo' (spiritual leaders) in search of expanding their ritual places of cult. Their purpose in the 'new local' of cult is to "change the mentality" and the social policy in "industrialized countries" viewing the construction of a new paradigm - especially social and political - in the relationship between countries of the North over countries of the Sout
O foco
caso, o biogásThe present work describes the construction of a didactic biodigester for the production of biogas to be
used at the Science Station - Itaipu Technological Park, destined for primary education students. The biodigesters
produce biogas employing anaerobic bacteria that perform the digestion of waste, such as food waste, decomposed
organic matter, among others. In addition to biogas, another by-product of anaerobic digestion is the biofertilizer,
used in agriculture as a nutrient-rich substrate for plants and vegetables. The final objective of the project is to obtain
a standardized biodigester model, which will not be used for large-scale production, but rather as an experimental
bench model, fostering the knowledge, technology, and teaching of renewable energies in different environments.
The focus of this research is to promote the knowledge diffusion, presenting to educators a form of science education
in a simple, didactic, visual and experienced way. The primary science education, precisely the teaching of alternative
forms of energy production, constitutes a crucial aspect in the popularization of science, in dynamic learning, looking
for the awareness of the importance of renewable energies and in reducing the environmental impact caused by
individuals in the environment. In addition to the study, a didactic model of biodigester was elaborated, and a
didactic primer was developed for students of primary education in order to expand and streamline knowledge about

Price-quantity-setting mixed duopoly models: market opening
Usually, market models analyse competition between firms with either quantity or price as decision’s variables. This paper considers mixed duopoly competitions in which a state-owned public firm and a private firm produce complementary goods. We analyse, separately, the model in which the state-owned public firm sets the price and the private firm chooses the output production; and the model in which the state-owned public firm sets the output production and the private firm chooses the price. By considering domestic and international models, we analyse the effects of opening the market to a foreign firm. We also compare the results obtained with different types of decision variables. This paper contributes to the understanding of the implications of firms’ decisions on social welfare. As a result, the paper shows that, in the domestic competition, social welfare is higher when the state-owned public firm sets price and the domestic private firm sets production outputs than in other competitions. Furthermore, when the market is opened to foreign firms, social welfare is higher when both firms set prices than in other competitions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Privatization and productive efficiency in an international Stackelberg mixed duopoly
We consider a Stackelberg mixed market in which a state-owned welfare-maximizing (domestic) public firm competes against a profit-maximizing (foreign) private firm. We suppose that the domestic firm is less efficient than the foreign private firm. However, the domestic firm can lower its marginal costs by conducting cost-reducing R&D investment. We examine the impacts of privatization on decisions upon cost-reducing R&D investment by the domestic firm and how these affect the domestic welfare. We show that privatization lowers productive efficiency of the domestic firm, regardless of whether the domestic firm is leader or follower. Furthermore, we also show that privatization of the domestic public firm deteriorates the domestic social welfare, regardless of whether the domestic firm is leader or follower.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
