sentido
The predictors of financial well-being and its impact on overall well-being: the case of Portugal
Although overall well-being is a well study phenomenon, financial well-being only recently
has taken interest in the research field. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to understand the
relation between financial well-being, its predictors (financial status, financial behaviour,
financial knowledge and financial attitudes) and overall well-being. Additionally, hypotheses
were tested with age, gender, household income and area of residence. It was used the
quantitative method to gather the data, and to analyse it, the SPPS through linear regression
analysis, mediation analysis, independent t-test and an anova test. Regarding the results, the
financial status is the only positive and significant impactor on financial well-being and the
latter has a significant positive relation with overall well-being. It was also found that financial
well-being was a mediator between financial status and overall well-being. Overall, the other
predictors did not show a significant effect. Moreover, higher household incomes contribute to
increase the financial well-being. Plus, I found that there were differences in financial wellbeing between groups. For example, the older you get does not necessarily implies a higher
financial satisfaction. Overall, men appear to have a higher financial well-being than women.
In sum, these results show a multidisciplinary concept of overall well-being and that
individuals prioritise financial security over the other components. In terms of practical
implications, this research is relevant because it highlights the evidence of financial status’
importance in predicting financial well-being, as well as the role of household income for
individual financial satisfaction.
financeiro, comportamento financeiro, conhecimento financeiro e atitudes financeiras) e o
bem-estar geral.
significativo. Além disso, elevado rendimento familiar contribui para aumentar o bem-estar
financeiro.
No
financeira individual
Self-Criticism, Neediness, and Distress Among Women Undergoing Treatment for Breast Cancer: A Preliminary Test of the Moderating Role of Adjustment to Illness
A diagnosis of cancer can be extremely stressful, and for that reason, cancer patients’ adjustment has been widely studied. Little is known, however, about how patients’ personality vulnerabilities affect their adjustment to cancer. The present study examined the moderating role of several psychological strategies of adjustment to cancer in the associations between the personality predispositions of self-criticism and neediness and distress among women diagnosed with breast cancer. Portuguese women who had been diagnosed with breast cancer for the first time (n _ 50) completed the Depressive Experiences Questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and the Mini-Mental Adjustment to Cancer Scale questionnaires. Both self-criticism and neediness were found to be associated with increased levels of distress, with a stronger association observed for neediness. Hierarchical regressions indicated that more adaptive adjustment to cancer (i.e., low levels of helplessness/hopelessness, low levels of anxious preoccupation, high levels of fatalism, and high levels of fighting spirit) moderates
the association between neediness and distress. There was no evidence that any of the adjustment variables had any mediating effect on the relationship between the personality variables (self-criticism and neediness) and distress. Results are discussed in the context of personality vulnerability and maladaptive psychological response to the disease as a stressful life event. Implications for treatment are discussed. Though promising, the results are preliminary and more research on larger samples is warranted
as restrições financeiras impedem o crescimento e a internacionalização das empresas;
conseguinte, poderem vir a diminuir as restrições financeiras, melhorando a saúde financeira
dessas empresas.
(INE) e referentes a dados económico-financeiros e a exportações. A metodologia escolhida
The purpose of the following dissertation is to verify the existing relationship between
Exports and Financial Restrictions of the Industrial Companies of the Portuguese Textile
Sector.
The majority of the existing theoretical and empirical literature regarding international
finances tends to claim that financial restrictions prevent the growth and the
internationalization of companies; however, there are few authors that can prove empirically
and explain why do exports have the potential to increase the companies’ access to foreign
financial funds and, as a consequence, decrease their financial restrictions, increasing the
financial health of these companies. In this dissertation, to study the problems previously
mentioned, the empirical analysis will be made through the conjoined use of two micro-
economical databases (from the 1996-2003 period), provided by the National Statistics
Institute (INE) and pertaining to financial-economical data and exports. The chosen
methodology for the measurement of the financial restrictions starts with the creation of a
financial score, in lieu of the proposal from Musso and Schiavo, (2008). With this
dissertation, we seek to discover what is the score of financial restrictions felt by the
companies in our sample, to evaluate to what extent are financial restrictions a hindrance to
the beginning of activity, and to verify if exports effectively improve the companies’ financial
health. From our collected results, through regression analysis, we suggest the idea that there
is in fact an auto-selection from the less financially restricted companies towards future
exporting activity, and also that the new exporting companies show improvement in their
financial situation

Mirror mirror on the wall, is creativity making me a networker at all? The role of political skills on the relationship between creative role identity and personal networking
JEL Classification System: M13 – Business Administration: New Firms, Startups; M12 – Business Administration: Personnel ManagementCreativity and networking are typically modeled, respectively, as outcome and antecedent variables of organizational phenomena; however, the conditions for the reverse model are under-explored, as is the effect of political skills in this relation. Accordingly, drawing on role identity and social competence theories, the current study argues that personal networking benefits of creative role identity and political skills, through a mediation effect of the latter variable. Using primary data gathered from 107 members of 50 startups operating in Portugal, the study findings indicate that creative role identity has a positive relation with political skills, and confirmed that political skills will have a positive impact on personal networking. Also, our study found an indirect effect of political skills on the relationship between creative role identity and personal networking. The variability between startups also indicates that second level variables should be accounted in the model. At the end of the study, insights on the implications of these findings and directions for future research were discussed.

Developing a business intelligence initiative in higher education
ACM Classification: H.4.2 Types of Systems – Decision SupportIn nowadays, Business Intelligence (BI) is one of the most important areas for managers and their organizations, whose investments on this type of projects are increasing. The decision-making process has become crucial to be more competitive, and higher education institutions (HEIs) are not an exception. For the last years, HEIs from all over the world have started to apply BI to their educational and decision-making challenges. In 2013, the BI Task Force from EUNIS (European University Information Systems) surveyed several HEIs to understand the maturity of their BI systems. The results revealed inconsistencies, raising the doubt about the comprehension of BI concepts. Considering this survey and its basis on maturity models, this dissertation analyses the existing models regarding higher education. Understanding the difficulties in answering the EUNIS survey from a perspective of two Portuguese universities is also a goal. It was created a feedback survey, whose results revealed it was a positive experience, although the lack of clarification of BI concepts was underlined.
Thinking about other universities starting their BI journey, it was developed a kit proposal that clarifies concepts and best practices for this sector. It was validated by the two universities mentioned above, which will be starting their initiative in January 2015. This validation was made through an interview, and the feedback was encouraging. Having a guidance to be methodical in this phase was highlighted, as well as the presentation of real success cases that allow to understand what other institutions do on their daily basis.
