Aqueous extracts from wood biotreated with the white-rot fungus Ceriporiopsis subvermispora were evaluated for their Fe3+- and Cu2+-reducing activities and their anti- or prooxidant properties in Fenton-like reactions to decolorize the recalcitrant dye Azure B. The decolorization of Azure B was strongly inhibited in the presence of 10% (v/v) wood extracts. Only 0.1% (v/v)-diluted extracts provided some enhancement of the Azure B decolorization. The iron-containing reactions decolorized more Azure B and consumed substantially more H2O2 than the reactions containing copper. This study demonstrates that water-soluble wood phenols exert anti- or prooxidant effects that depend on their concentration in the reactions and on the type of cation, Fe3+ or Cu2+, used to convert H2O2 to OH radicals. USE OF ADDITIVES IN THE WOOD BIODEGRADATION BY THE FUNGUS Ceriporiopsis subvermispora: EFFECT IN THE MANGANESE PEROXIDASE-DEPENDENT LIPID PEROXIDATION. Ceriporiopsis subvermispora is a selective fungus in the wood delignification and the most promising in biopulping. Through the lipid peroxidation initiated by manganese peroxidase (MnP), free radicals can be generated, which can act in the degradation of lignin nonphenolic structures. This work evaluated the prooxidant activity (based in lipid peroxidation) of enzymatic extracts from wood biodegradation by this fungus in cultures containing exogenous calcium, oxalic acid or soybean oil. It was observed that MnP significant activity is required to promote lipid peroxidation and wood delignification. Positive correlation between prooxidant activity x MnP was observed up to 300 IU kg(-1) of wood

    The annotation of continuous media

In principle, the presentation of continuous media is time-dependent. Examples of continuous media are audio, video and graphics animation. This work is on the support for the annotation of continuous media, or the integration of voice comments with continuous- media documents like music and video clips. This application has strict synchronisation requirements, both with respect to the media involved and to user interaction. The application involves functions such as storage, management, control of GUIs, and of continuous- medium devices. These are realised by components which can be distributed across a network. New models and architectures have been defined to enable open distributed processing of applications, that is, distributed processing independent of operating systems. Abstractions are provided, which facilitate the development of applications, and these execute supported by platforms that implement such open architectures. These architectures have been based on an object-based client/server model. Our work aims at exploring object-orientation, open distributed processing and some characteristics of continuous media, through the development and use of the proposed application. The application is designed as a set of objects with well-defined functions and which interact between themselves. A distinguishing feature of the application is that it involves reusable components and mechanisms. For example, a mechanism, which enables components to control logical clocks and synchronise them, is incorporated in the application in response to its synchronisation requirements. The implementation is based on ANSAware, a platform that supports open distributed processing and allows distributed objects to bind to each other, to interact with one another, and to exhibit concurrent activities. The performance of the implementation is examined with respect to the application’s response to user requests. Response times of operations such as play, pause, etc., are measured, and the final results are better than a defined maximum tolerance. An analysis of the development approach is made with respect to support for real-time activities in the application, and to software reuse in the model proposed. This thesis concludes by reviewing the suitability of the object-oriented approach for the development of distributed continuous media applications

O C.A.A. de resistência à compressão igual a 55 MPa apresentou menor retração e fluência básica que o C.A.A. de resistência 35 MPa.Abstract: This project analyzed, theoretically and experimentally, the mechanical and rheological behavior of the selfcompacting concrete (C.A.A.), specially its features according to slow deformation, shrinkage and creep, and its applicability in precast elements. Two compositions of concrete of different classes of resistance were developed, 35 MPa and 55 MPa. In the stage of the dosage, the procedures of the method REPETTE-MELO were used, rheometrical tests, fluidness tests and Mini-Slump were carried out on the pastes and the mortars, and control tests, such as Slump-Flow, funnel V test, box L, box U and tube U, and mechanical properties tests, such as tensile strength, compression strength and elasticity module were used to define the C.A.A. feature. The evaluation of the concrete behavior by creep happened at ages of 7, 14, 28, and 56 days, according to NBR 8224 (ABNT, 1983), and by shrinkage according to MERCOSUL NM 131:9. The experimental results were compared with values from conventional concrete available in the literature. All tests were performed at CESP Civil Engineer Laboratory, and at Hydrology Laboratory of the UNESP in Ilha Solteira-SP. In the fast deformation study, traction tests in flexion were performed at 28 and 56 days. The creep coefficients were calculated either through experimental values as by the NBR 6118 and compared each other, showing a good correlation, with differences smaller than 10% for all ages. The composition of self-compacting concrete was established for evaluation, in partnership with precast elements company Protendit of São José do Rio Preto-SP, where were shaped beams, in real scale, which showed better finishing and they showed themselves 50% more economical regarding labor, when compared with conventional concrete beam. The results reached show that the compositions of self-compacting concrete present higher values of shrinkage and creep when compared with conventional concrete of same strength. The C.A.A. that presented compression strength equal to 55 MPa showed a lower shrinkage and basic creep that C.A.A. strength of 35 MPa.DoutoradoEdificaçõesDoutor em Engenharia Civi

Cooperative UAV–UGV autonomous power pylon inspection: an investigation of cooperative outdoor vehicle positioning architecture

    Get PDF
Realizing autonomous inspection, such as that of power distribution lines, through unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems is a key research domain in robotics. In particular, the use of autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles to execute the tasks of an inspection process can enhance the efficacy and safety of the operation; however, many technical problems, such as those pertaining to the precise positioning and path following of the vehicles, robust obstacle detection, and intelligent control, must be addressed. In this study, an innovative architecture involving an unmanned aircraft vehicle (UAV) and an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) was examined for detailed inspections of power lines. In the proposed strategy, each vehicle provides its position information to the other, which ensures a safe inspection process. The results of real-world experiments indicate a satisfactory performance, thereby demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed approach. This research was funded by National Counsel of Technological and Scientific Development of Brazil (CNPq). Systematic Review and Critical Analysis of Cost Studies Associated with Parkinson's Disease

    Get PDF
Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disease worldwide, affecting more than four million people. Typically, it affects individuals above 45, when they are still productive, compromising both aging and quality of life. Therefore, the cost of the disease must be identified, so that the use of resources can be rational and efficient. Additionally, in Brazil, there is a lack of research on the costs of neurodegenerative diseases, such as PD, a gap addressed in this study. This systematic review critically addresses the various methodologies used in original research around the world in the last decade on the subject, showing that costs are hardly comparable. Nonetheless, the economic and social impacts are implicit, and important information for public health agents is provided.Hosp Israelita Albert Einstein, Programa Posgrad, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo UNIFESP, Movement Disorders Dept Neurol, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo UNIFESP, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilHosp Israelita Albert Einstein, Neurol Program, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilMovement Disorders Department in Neurology, Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP), São Paulo, SP, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP), São Paulo, SP, BrazilWeb of Scienc
