The optical companion to the binary millisecond pulsar J1824-2452H in the globular cluster M28
We report on the optical identification of the companion star to the
eclipsing millisecond pulsar PSR J1824-2452H in the galactic globular cluster
M28 (NGC 6626). This star is at only 0.2" from the nominal position of the
pulsar and it shows optical variability (~ 0.25 mag) that nicely correlates
with the pulsar orbital period. It is located on the blue side of the cluster
main sequence, ~1.5 mag fainter than the turn-off point. The observed light
curve shows two distinct and asymmetric minima, suggesting that the companion
star is suffering tidal distortion from the pulsar. This discovery increases
the number of non-degenerate MSP companions optically identified so far in
globular clusters (4 out of 7), suggesting that these systems could be a common
outcome of the pulsar recycling process, at least in dense environments where

The giant, horizontal and asymptotic branches of galactic globular clusters. I. The catalog, photometric observables and features
A catalog including a set of the most recent Color Magnitude Diagrams (CMDs)
is presented for a sample of 61 Galactic Globular Clusters (GGCs). We used this
data-base to perform an homogeneous systematic analysis of the evolved
sequences (namely, Red Giant Branch (RGB), Horizontal Branch (HB) and
Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB)). Based on this analysis, we present: (1) a new
procedure to measure the level of the ZAHB (V_ZAHB) and an homogeneous set of
distance moduli obtained adopting the HB as standard candle; (2) an independent
estimate for RGB metallicity indicators and new calibrations of these
parameters in terms of both spectroscopic ([Fe/H]_CG97) and global metallicity
([M/H], including also the alpha-elements enhancement). The set of equations
presented can be used to simultaneously derive a photometric estimate of the
metal abundance and the reddening from the morphology and the location of the
RGB in the (V,B-V)-CMD. (3) the location of the RGB-Bump (in 47 GGCs) and the
AGB-Bump (in 9 GGCs). The dependence of these features on the metallicity is
discussed. We find that by using the latest theoretical models and the new
metallicity scales the earlier discrepancy between theory and observations

Elementary analysis of the special relativistic combination of velocities, Wigner rotation, and Thomas precession
The purpose of this paper is to provide an elementary introduction to the
qualitative and quantitative results of velocity combination in special
relativity, including the Wigner rotation and Thomas precession. We utilize
only the most familiar tools of special relativity, in arguments presented at
three differing levels: (1) utterly elementary, which will suit a first course
in relativity; (2) intermediate, to suit a second course; and (3) advanced, to
suit higher level students. We then give a summary of useful results, and

Radio Timing and Optical Photometry of the Black Widow System PSR J1953+1846A in the Globular Cluster M71
We report on the determination of the astrometric, spin and orbital
parameters for PSR J1953+1846A, a "black widow" binary millisecond pulsar in
the globular cluster M71. By using the accurate position and orbital parameters
obtained from radio timing, we identified the optical companion in ACS/Hubble
Space Telescope images. It turns out to be a faint (m_F606W>=24, m_F814W>=23)
and variable star located at only ~0.06" from the pulsar timing position. The
light curve shows a maximum at the pulsar inferior conjunction and a minimum at
the pulsar superior conjunction, thus confirming the association with the
system. The shape of the optical modulation suggests that the companion star is
heated, likely by the pulsar wind. The comparison with the X-ray light curve
possibly suggests the presence of an intra-binary shock due to the interaction
between the pulsar wind and the material released by the companion. This is the
second identification (after COM-M5C) of an optical companion to a black widow
pulsar in a globular cluster. Interestingly, the two companions show a similar

Local temperature in quantum thermal states
We consider blocks of quantum spins in a chain at thermal equilibrium,
focusing on their properties from a thermodynamical perspective. Whereas in
classical systems the temperature behaves as an intensive magnitude, a
deviation from this behavior is expected in quantum systems. In particular, we
see that under some conditions the description of the blocks as thermal states
with the same global temperature as the whole chain fails. We analyze this
issue by employing the quantum fidelity as a figure of merit, singling out in
detail the departure from the classical behavior. The influence in this sense
of zero-temperature quantum phase transitions can be clearly observed within
this approach. Then we show that the blocks can be considered indeed as thermal
states with a high fidelity, provided an effective local temperature is
properly identified. Such a result originates from typical properties of
reduced sub-systems of energy-constrained Hilbert spaces. Finally, the relation
between local and global temperature is analyzed as a function of the size of

Optical and Near-Infrared UBVRIJHK Photometry for the RR Lyrae stars in the Nearby Globular Cluster M4 (NGC 6121)
We present optical and near-infrared UBVRIJHK photometry of stars in the
Galactic globular cluster M4 (NGC 6121) based upon a large corpus of
observations obtained mainly from public astronomical archives. We concentrate
on the RR Lyrae variable stars in the cluster, and make a particular effort to
accurately reidentify the previously discovered variables. We have also
discovered two new probable RR Lyrae variables in the M4 field: one of them by
its position on the sky and its photometric properties is a probable member of
the cluster, and the second is a probable background (bulge?) object. We
provide accurate equatorial coordinates for all 47 stars identified as RR
Lyraes, new photometric measurements for 46 of them, and new period estimates
for 45. We have also derived accurate positions and mean photometry for 34 more
stars previously identified as variable stars of other types, and for an
additional five non-RR Lyrae variable stars identified for the first time here.
We present optical and near-infrared color-magnitude diagrams for the cluster
and show the locations of the variable stars in them. We present the Bailey
(period-amplitude) diagrams and the period-frequency histogram for the RR Lyrae
stars in M4 and compare them to the corresponding diagrams for M5 (NGC 5904).
We conclude that the RR Lyrae populations in the two clusters are quite similar
in all the relevant properties that we have considered. The mean periods,
pulsation-mode ratios, and Bailey diagrams of these two clusters show support
for the recently proposed "Oosterhoff-neutral" classification.Comment: 33 pages, 16 figures, 7 table
New exactly solvable relativistic models with anomalous interaction
A special class of Dirac-Pauli equations with time-like vector potentials of
external field is investigated. A new exactly solvable relativistic model
describing anomalous interaction of a neutral Dirac fermion with a
cylindrically symmetric external e.m. field is presented. The related external
field is a superposition of the electric field generated by a charged infinite
filament and the magnetic field generated by a straight line current. In
non-relativistic approximation the considered model is reduced to the

Torsional nodeless vibrations of quaking neutron star restored by combined forces of shear elastic and magnetic field stresses
Within the framework of Newtonian magneto-solid-mechanics, relying on
equations appropriate for a perfectly conducting elastic continuous medium
threaded by a uniform magnetic field, the asteroseismic model of a neutron star
undergoing axisymmetric global torsional nodeless vibrations under the combined
action of Hooke's elastic and Lorentz magnetic forces is considered with
emphasis on a toroidal Alfv\'en mode of differentially rotational vibrations
about the dipole magnetic moment axis of the star. The obtained spectral
equation for frequency is applied to -pole identification of
quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) of X-ray flux during the giant flares of SGR
1806-20 and SGR 1900+14. Our calculations suggest that detected QPOs can be
consistently interpreted, within the framework of this model, as produced by
global torsional nodeless vibrations of quaking magnetar if they are considered
to be restored by the joint action of bulk forces of shear elastic and magnetic

Discovery of three new millisecond pulsars in Terzan 5
We report on the discovery of three new millisecond pulsars (namely
J1748-2446aj, J1748-2446ak and J1748-2446al) in the inner regions of the dense
stellar system Terzan 5. These pulsars have been discovered thanks to a method,
alternative to the classical search routines, that exploited the large set of
archival observations of Terzan 5 acquired with the Green Bank Telescope over 5
years (from 2010 to 2015). This technique allowed the analysis of stacked power
spectra obtained by combining ~206 hours of observation. J1748-2446aj has a
spin period of ~2.96 ms, J1748-2446ak of ~1.89 ms (thus it is the fourth
fastest pulsar in the cluster) and J1748-2446al of ~5.95 ms. All the three
millisecond pulsars are isolated and currently we have timing solutions only
for J1748-2446aj and J1748-2446ak. For these two systems, we evaluated the
contribution to the measured spin-down rate of the acceleration due to the
cluster potential field, thus estimating the intrinsic spin-down rates, which
are in agreement with those typically measured for millisecond pulsars in
globular clusters. Our results increase to 37 the number of pulsars known in
Terzan 5, which now hosts 25% of the entire pulsar population identified, so
