Advanced Coordinated Beamforming for the Downlink of Future LTE Cellular Networks
Modern cellular networks in traditional frequency bands are notoriously
interference-limited especially in urban areas, where base stations are
deployed in close proximity to one another. The latest releases of Long Term
Evolution (LTE) incorporate features for coordinating downlink transmissions as
an efficient means of managing interference. Recent field trial results and
theoretical studies of the performance of joint transmission (JT) coordinated
multi-point (CoMP) schemes revealed, however, that their gains are not as high
as initially expected, despite the large coordination overhead. These schemes
are known to be very sensitive to defects in synchronization or information
exchange between coordinating bases stations as well as uncoordinated
interference. In this article, we review recent advanced coordinated
beamforming (CB) schemes as alternatives, requiring less overhead than JT CoMP
while achieving good performance in realistic conditions. By stipulating that,
in certain LTE scenarios of increasing interest, uncoordinated interference
constitutes a major factor in the performance of CoMP techniques at large, we
hereby assess the resilience of the state-of-the-art CB to uncoordinated
interference. We also describe how these techniques can leverage the latest
specifications of current cellular networks, and how they may perform when we
consider standardized feedback and coordination. This allows us to identify
some key roadblocks and research directions to address as LTE evolves towards

Response of an artificially blown clarinet to different blowing pressure profiles
Using an artificial mouth with an accurate pressure control, the onset of the
pressure oscillations inside the mouthpiece of a simplified clarinet is studied
experimentally. Two time profiles are used for the blowing pressure: in a first
set of experiments the pressure is increased at constant rates, then decreased
at the same rate. In a second set of experiments the pressure rises at a
constant rate and is then kept constant for an arbitrary period of time. In
both cases the experiments are repeated for different increase rates. Numerical
simulations using a simplified clarinet model blown with a constantly
increasing mouth pressure are compared to the oscillating pressure obtained
inside the mouthpiece. Both show that the beginning of the oscillations appears
at a higher pressure values than the theoretical static threshold pressure, a
manifestation of bifurcation delay. Experiments performed using an interrupted
increase in mouth pressure show that the beginning of the oscillation occurs
close to the stop in the increase of the pressure. Experimental results also
highlight that the speed of the onset transient of the sound is roughly the
same, independently of the duration of the increase phase of the blowing

Discrete complex analysis on planar quad-graphs
We develop a linear theory of discrete complex analysis on general
quad-graphs, continuing and extending previous work of Duffin, Mercat, Kenyon,
Chelkak and Smirnov on discrete complex analysis on rhombic quad-graphs. Our
approach based on the medial graph yields more instructive proofs of discrete
analogs of several classical theorems and even new results. We provide discrete
counterparts of fundamental concepts in complex analysis such as holomorphic
functions, derivatives, the Laplacian, and exterior calculus. Also, we discuss
discrete versions of important basic theorems such as Green's identities and
Cauchy's integral formulae. For the first time, we discretize Green's first
identity and Cauchy's integral formula for the derivative of a holomorphic
function. In this paper, we focus on planar quad-graphs, but we would like to
mention that many notions and theorems can be adapted to discrete Riemann
surfaces in a straightforward way.
In the case of planar parallelogram-graphs with bounded interior angles and
bounded ratio of side lengths, we construct a discrete Green's function and
discrete Cauchy's kernels with asymptotics comparable to the smooth case.
Further restricting to the integer lattice of a two-dimensional skew coordinate
system yields appropriate discrete Cauchy's integral formulae for higher order

Stool Xpert® MTB/RIF test for the diagnosis of childhood pulmonary tuberculosis at primary clinics in Zimbabwe.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of Xpert® MTB/RIF on stool samples from children with clinical suspicion of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) at primary care clinics. DESIGN: A cross-sectional diagnostic evaluation enrolling 5-16 year olds from whom one induced sputum (IS) sample was tested for microbiological TB confirmation. Results of a single stool sample tested using Xpert were compared against microbiologically confirmed TB, defined as a positive result on sputum microscopy and/or culture and/or IS Xpert. RESULTS: Of 222 children enrolled, 218 had complete microbiological results. The median age was 10.6 years (interquartile range 8-13). TB was microbiologically confirmed in 19/218 (8.7%) children. Of these, respectively 5 (26%), 9 (47%) and 15 (79%) were smear-, culture- and IS Xpert-positive. Stool Xpert was positive in 13/19 (68%) microbiologically confirmed cases and 4/199 (2%) microbiologically negative cases. Stool Xpert detected 76.9% (10/13) of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected and 50% (3/6) of non-HIV-infected children with microbiologically confirmed TB (P = 0.241). CONCLUSION: Stool Xpert is a potential alternative screening test for children with suspected TB if sputum is unavailable. Strategies to optimise the diagnostic yield of stool Xpert assay need further study
Carrier-induced ferromagnetism in p-Zn1-xMnxTe
We present a systematic study of the ferromagnetic transition induced by the
holes in nitrogen doped Zn1-xMnxTe epitaxial layers, with particular emphasis
on the values of the Curie-Weiss temperature as a function of the carrier and
spin concentrations. The data are obtained from thorough analyses of the
results of magnetization, magnetoresistance and spin-dependent Hall effect
measurements. The experimental findings compare favorably, without adjustable
parameters, with the prediction of the Rudermann-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY)
model or its continuous-medium limit, that is, the Zener model, provided that
the presence of the competing antiferromagnetic spin-spin superexchange
interaction is taken into account, and the complex structure of the valence
band is properly incorporated into the calculation of the spin susceptibility
of the hole liquid. In general terms, the findings demonstrate how the
interplay between the ferromagnetic RKKY interaction, carrier localization, and
intrinsic antiferromagnetic superexchange affects the ordering temperature and
the saturation value of magnetization in magnetically and electrostatically

Ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)N epilayers versus antiferromagnetic GaMnN clusters
Mn-doped wurtzite GaN epilayers have been grown by nitrogen plasma-assisted
molecular beam epitaxy. Correlated SIMS, structural and magnetic measurements
show that the incorporation of Mn strongly depends on the conditions of the
growth. Hysteresis loops which persist at high temperature do not appear to be
correlated to the presence of Mn. Samples with up to 2% Mn are purely
substitutional GaMnN epilayers, and exhibit paramagnetic
properties. At higher Mn contents, precipitates are formed which are identified
as GaMnN clusters by x-ray diffraction and absorption: this induces a
decrease of the paramagnetic magnetisation. Samples co-doped with enough Mg
exhibit a new feature: a ferromagnetic component is observed up to
K, which cannot be related to superparamagnetism of unresolved magnetic

Disaster Operations Management: an Empirical Study from Thailand
Disasters have unpredictable and deleterious impacts on modern societies. While recent operations management research has increasingly focused on disaster operations, only a few studies have examined the recovery phase of post-disaster operations. This research presents an overview of Disaster Operations Management as well as an empirical study using econometrics analysis to examine the recovery phase of post-disaster operations. The results suggest that when resources are scarce, at a strategic level we need to understand where to begin when planning the recovery process. This study is an exploratory analysis of the question of how flooding affects per capita income in areas with different levels of industrialization. We developed multiple regression models using panel data from Thailand to examine this effect, finding that flooding in a previous year has a positive effect on areas with a low level of industrialization, but a negative one on highly industrialized areas, meaning the residents of the latter are affected differently. Our results suggest the level of industrialization impacts the effectiveness of the recovery process. Finally, we discuss the implications of the study as well as suggestions for future research
Approximation of conformal mappings using conformally equivalent triangular lattices
Consider discrete conformal maps defined on the basis of two conformally
equivalent triangle meshes, that is edge lengths are related by scale factors
associated to the vertices. Given a smooth conformal map , we show that it
can be approximated by such discrete conformal maps . In
particular, let be an infinite regular triangulation of the plane with
congruent triangles and only acute angles (i.e.\ ). We scale this
