Interactive tabletops for architectural visualization: combining stereoscopy and touch interfaces for cultural heritage

This paper presents an interactive apparatus to didactically explore Alberti's treatise on architecture, De re aedificatoria, as generative design systems, namely shape grammars. This apparatus allows users to interactively explore such architectonical knowledge in both appealing and informal ways, by enabling them to visualize and manipulate in real-time different design solutions. The authors identify the difficulties on encoding the architectural knowledge of a parametric design model into an interactive apparatus to be used by laypeople. At last, the authors discuss the results of a survey conducted to users that interacted with the prototype in order to assess its ability to communicate the knowledge of an architectural language.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT)Escola de Arquitectura da Universidade do MinhoThis work was partially supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT): doctoral grants SFRH/BD/69910/2010, SFRH/BD/88040/2012 and SFRH/BD/91372/2012, and projects MIVis PTDC/EIA-EIA/104031/2008, Alberti Digital PTDC/AUR-AQI/108274/2008, TECTON-3D PTDC/EEI-SII/3154/2012 and Pest OE/EEI/LA0021/2013

Measurement: concepts, methods and practice within an electronic book

This work reports on a novel use of Information and Communication Technologies for composing an electronicbook on the measurement field. The e-book "Laboratórios de Instrumentação para Medição/Laboratories of Instrumentation for Measurement" is written in Portuguese and in English. Dealing with concepts, methods, procedures and hands-on activityit combines sketches, figures, animations, videos and remote and virtual labs on the measurement area, integrating many types of multimedia within the written material. The main goal of this work is to push the users to experimental practice so as to improve the conceptual knowledge, to identify many error sources when measuring and clarify how to minimize them. The online experiments related with different subjects within the e-book are accessible for any interested user. All other setups described in the work are described in full detail in order to be easily reproduced by anyone, anywhere, and making it possible to easily replicate the experimental activity

On the way for a better methodology in teaching/learning instrumentation for measurements at mechanical engineering Compulsory Syllabus

Instrumentation for Measurements is a course of 3rd year, 2nd semester, in the 5-year Mechanical Engineering degree, run at Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto (FEUP) under the responsibility of the first author, in which around 60% of the time is devoted to 'hands on' laboratory activity, involving a large number of students. The teachers team of this course has a broad rangecurricular training, not only in their different degrees butalso in several post graduate fields of specialisation. Thisbrings a transversal perspective, which is very importantwhen dealing with the teaching/learning of multidisciplinary matters.Continuous (theoretical and experimental) assessment hasbeen used during the last 4 years. It has been carefullyplaned and programmed at the very beginning of thesemester, exploring different student capabilities, eitherindividually or in group. This paper presents the methodologies that were used andcomments their advantages and disadvantages.Index Terms - Teaching/learning methodologies, hands onlaboratory, continuous assessment, experimental training
