The present study aimed to assess the seven major losses in production processes of a small company through the Lean Management System. Following an exploratory methodology, qualitative, through a case study in which they were cross-analyzed of information obtained through observation, visits in the company, interviews with managers, and an application of a checklist for implementation of lean practices. The results of the main losses were shown in a case study in relation to the national context of technology for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), moving over a field of study still open and needed in Brazil. It was emphasized the fact that the company adopts some practices of lean production associated with pushed practices, in a production composition that is traditional in this kind of industry. In this context, the main losses identified – overproduction, processing, waiting, inventory, defective products – are consistent with the reality of weakness in the integration with the supply chain, the balancing of production and continued production

Dynamic stabilization of L2 periodic orbits using attitude-orbit coupling effects

Numerical explorations show how the known periodic solutions of the Hill problem are modified in the case of the attitude-orbit coupling that may occur for large satellite structures. We focus on the case in which the elongation is the dominant satellite?s characteristic and find that a rotating structure may remain with its largest dimension in a plane parallel to the plane of the primaries. In this case, the effect produced by the non-negligible physical dimension is dynamically equivalent to the perturbation produced by an oblate central body on a masspoint satellite. Based on this, it is demonstrated that the attitude-orbital coupling of a long enough body may change the dynamical characteristics of a periodic orbit about the collinear Lagrangian points

Constructal Design of Elliptical Conduits for Cooling of Gas Turbine Blades with External Thermal Barrier Coating

Gas turbines (GTs) are thermal machines used to transform the energy released in combustion with a hydrocarbon into mechanical power, in order to drive a machine or generate thrust in aircraft. The critical issue in the GT design are the parts exposed to extreme mechanical and thermal conditions, e.g., the first row of turbine blades. The GT thermal efficiency is limited by the maximum temperature the blade materials can withstand without softening or creeping. Currently, the maximum operating temperature is above the softening point of the blade material thanks to techniques of ceramic coatings of low thermal conductivity, called Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC), and techniques of blade cooling. The internal cooling of blades involves conduits inside them for air that comes from a bleed in an intermediate compressor stage. The air bleeding is around 3 to 5% of the main GT flow. This air and the heat flow that it receives are not used to generate power, so it is necessary to optimize the cooling techniques in order to control the temperature using the least amount of air and minimum heat flux evacuated, for holding the GT overall efficiency high. The present work studies the internal cooling of Elemental Gas Turbine Blade (EGTB) with a fixed thickness of the TBC and the optimization of the conduit shape and position over a cross section in 2D. The optimization is carried out by exhaustive searching method based on the Constructal Theory. The optimization of the position, size, and aspect ratio of EGTBs was done for two types of standard elliptical conduits of different geometries, uniformly distributed. Two different objective functions are analyzed: minimum maximum temperature on the metal and maximum heat evacuation efficiency. The outcome of this work establishes that the use of elliptical conduits of aspect ratio 2:5 leads to improvement in the thermal performance of cooled blades. As compared with circular conduits of the same area, elliptical conduits allow transfer of a greater amount of heat; with a correct design, they enable a lower maximum temperature on the metal. Besides, the constructal designs obtained in this study for the minimum maximum relative temperature ˜ T max or maximum heat evacuation efficiency ξ were not identical.

Phenotypic effects of different doses of physical and chemical mutagens in cotton plants

Induced mutation techniques have been effectively used to obtain new variability in crop plants. Mutations are the primary source of genetic variability and therefore, some control over their frequency can be considered a valuable tool for plant breeding. Mutagens can be grouped into two broad categories according to their nature: physical and chemical. Doses must be optimized to increase the chances of generating mutants and achieve a population of mutagenized plants that allow a successful selection of mutants of interest. The aim of this study was to test the sensitivity of different mutagenic agents on Guazuncho 3 variety cotton seeds. Four doses of each treatment were evaluated and different phenotypic traits were recorded. The greatest effects on germination percentage, germination velocity index, plant survival and somatic effects were observed in treatments with ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) as the doses increased. Lower but significant effects were recorded in sodium azide (SA) treatments and no significant differences were observed for X-rays and combined treatments (SA+X-rays). The effects on growth rate were significant in chemical treatments with R2 = 0.84 for SA and R2 = 0.97 for EMS. In addition, it was observed that the EMS and X-rays treatments caused a greater number of off-type plants and chlorotic irregular-shaped spots. The results of this preliminary study determined the mutagens doses to be used on Guazuncho 3 cotton seeds, to generate an M1 population for developing a mutation breeding program.
