Combining abilities and heterotic groups in Pisum sativum L.

    Get PDF
The objective of this research was to investigate the use of heterosis and estimates of the general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) for yield and the yield-related traits for identifying suitable parents and forming heterotic groups for pea- breeding programs. Seventy-six F1 hybrids derived from crosses between nineteen female lines and four male testers were evaluated during two seasons. Estimates of variance due to GCA and SCA effects and their relationship revealed predominantly additive effects for all traits. Parents with higher GCA values were "ZAV20" (female parent) and "ZAV23" (male parent). The cross "ZAV5 x ZAV23" showed the highest value for seed yield. Days to flowering and number of seeds per plot were the variables with the highest values for broad and narrow-sense heritability (0.93 and 0.65, respectively), indicating that these traits are highly heritable. The highest best parent heterosis for seed yield was observed in the "ZAV17 x DDR14" hybrid. Four heterotic groups were formed and validated by estimating the intra and inter group heterosis.Fil: Espósito, María Andrea. Universidad Nacional de Rosario. Predicting short-period spectral ordinates of hybrid ground shaking prediction tools: a comparative benchmark

    Get PDF
In this paper, a comparative perspective is provided on the efficiency and drawback of hybrid techniques to produce broad-band (BB) seismic time-histories, based on physics-based numerical simulations. The recently developed ANN2BB technique (Paolucci et al., 2018) is put under focus: it exploits Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to predict short-period response spectra, feeding the algorithm with the low frequency outcome numerical simulations and producing hybrid broad-band (0-30 Hz) timehistories. The robustness of the methodology is argued by inputting correlated (from observations) and uncorrelated long-period spectral ordinates into the ANN predictive tool to draw an uncertainty map of possible predictions and test its sensitivity in relationship with the a priori accuracy numerical simulations

Key factors for a continuous improvement process

    Get PDF
The goal of this work was to examine the content of continuous improvement strategies, taking into account the important role they play in building competitiveness. This paper argues that several specific issues must be taken into account in order to reach successful outcomes. This work starts with a literature review on the matter. On this basis, we designed a survey administered to a group of 30 large companies, each of which is renowned leader in Argentina. Finally, we compared the development of continuous improvement process in companies with very effective results and with scarce results. Differences that emerged from this comparison enabled us to identify critical factors for achieving a successful improvement process. As there are no recent researches on continuous improvement programs in Argentina, this paper contributes to recognizing and systematizing what has been done, comparing it with theoretical framework and uncovering research gaps for future studies. However, further research must confirm these findings and move forward on the analysis of intangible factors, like: internal communications, climate, culture, self reflexion, consensus, etc

A test platform for dependability analysis of SoCs Exposed to EMI and radiation

    Get PDF
With the IEC 62.132 proposal, the roadmap for standardization of Electromagnetic (EM) immunity measurement methods has reached a high degree of success. The same understanding can be taken from the MIL-STD-883 H for Total Ionizing Dose (TID) radiation. However, no effort has been made to measure the behavior of electronics operating under the combined effects of both, EM noise and TID radiation. For the reasons pointed out, the combined-effect measurements should be mandatory when dealing with Systems-on-Chip (SoCs) devoted to critical applications. In this paper, we present a configurable platform devoted to perform combined tests of EM immunity and TID radiation of SoCs according to the international standards.Fil: Benfica, Juliano. A rapid method to increase the number of F1 plants in pea (Pisum sativum) breeding programs.

    Get PDF
In breeding programs, a large number of F2 individuals are required to perform the selection process properly, but often few such plants are available. In order to obtain more F2 seeds, it is necessary to multiply the F1 plants. We developed a rapid, efficient and reproducible protocol for in vitro shoot regeneration and rooting of seeds using 6-benzylaminopurine. To optimize shoot regeneration, basic medium contained Murashige and Skoog (MS) salts with or without B5 Gamborg vitamins and different concentrations of 6-benzylaminopurine (25, 50 and 75 μM) using five genotypes. We found that modified MS (B5 vitamins + 25 μM 6-benzylaminopurine) is suitable for in vitro shoot regeneration of pea. Thirty-eight hybrid combinations were transferred onto selected medium to produce shoots that were used for root induction on MS medium supplemented with α-naphthalene-acetic acid. Elongated shoots were developed from all hybrid genotypes. This procedure can be used in pea breeding programs and will allow working with a large number of plants even when the F1 plants produce few seeds.Fil: Espósito, María Andrea. Fibromyalgia: description of the syndrome in athletes and its implications

    Get PDF
Fibromyalgia syndrome is a very common feature in the daily practice of rheumatologists. Therapy is based on the use of analgesics, anti-depressants, and other drugs. Many physicians indicate exercise, stretching, and relaxing programs as adjuvant therapies. It was surprising to find fibromyalgia in well-trained athletes. The syndrome, however, appears in athletes that reported recurrent tendon-muscle lesions. In this study, the authors analyzed a group of gymnastics and track and field athletes involved in competitive training. They found a significant incidence of the syndrome (7 in 20 subjects) in this group. This is an important finding, since fibromyalgia causes muscular pain and stiffness, and can predispose the athletes to muscle lesions and damage. Another important point regarding the syndrome is that some of its symptoms are related to overtraining and to the chronic fatigue syndrome. Therefore, the authors suggest that there is an important connection between those aspects.

Assessing the influence of around-source deep crustal heterogeneities on the seismic wave propagation by 3-D broad-band numerical modelling

    Get PDF
Tectonic and seismic activities induce crustal rock fracturing in the immediate surroundings of buried fault discontinuities. The heterogeneous nature of this 3-D scatter distribution leaves a high-frequency footprint on the recorded wave-field at surface. This study represents an attempt to clarify the complex relationship between the propagated wave-field and the statistical properties of the regional medium. This objective is pursued by inspecting the broadband (0-25Hz) synthetic wave-forms obtained by sourceto-site 3-D numerical simulations in regional-size scenarios. The presented numerical study compares the major differences obtained when including heterogeneous properties in the model. Coda-waves are analysed and the high-frequency attenuation is assessed by computing the k coefficient for different source-station configurations. This work was performed using HPC resources from the Mésocentre computing center of CentraleSupélec and École Normale Supérieure Paris-Saclay (http://mesocentre.centralesupelec.fr/)
