Measurement of Social Capital and Growth: an Economic Methodology
This paper develops a measure of social capital based on economic relationships and analyzes its effects on growth. Investment in social capital is modeled by using the conceptual framework for measuring physical capital services. The measure of social capital depends on expectations of income, its investment cost, inequality in society, the density of trust networks, the size of the social network and the rate of depreciation of social capital. With this methodology a database is constructed for 23 OECD countries covering the period 1970-2001 and the positive effect of social capital on economic growth is tested.Social capital, Investment, Social networks, Economic Growth
Case report: Clitoromegaly as a consequence of Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia. An accurate medical and surgical approach
We present a case of a woman with a history of Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) diagnosed at the age of 12, who was referred to our unit for surgical treatment. Despite the initial diagnosis was an indirect inguinal hernia, it was a misdiagnosis. Once in our service, this was corrected into clitoromegaly secondary to CAH. Physical examination and imaging test discarded other abnormalities, such as secondary effects androgenization. Regarding surgical treatment, the techniques used were Spencer and Allen combined with Kumar, which are the most used for clitoroplasty but also less used in Peru.Revisión por pare

The synaptic vesicle protein CSP alpha prevents presynaptic degeneration
Cysteine string protein α (CSPα)—an abundant synaptic vesicle protein that contains a DNA-J domain characteristic of Hsp40 chaperones—is thought to regulate Ca2+ channels and/or synaptic vesicle exocytosis. We now show that, in young mice, deletion of CSPα does not impair survival and causes no significant changes in presynaptic Ca2+ currents or synaptic vesicle exocytosis as measured in the Calyx of Held synapse. At 2–4 weeks of age, however, CSPα-deficient mice develop a progressive, fatal sensorimotor disorder. The neuromuscular junctions and Calyx synapses of CSPα-deficient mice exhibit increasing neurodegenerative changes, synaptic transmission becomes severely impaired, and the mutant mice die at ∼2 months of age. Our data suggest that CSPα is not essential for the normal operation of Ca2+ channels or exocytosis but acts as a presynaptic chaperone that maintains continued synaptic function, raising the possibility that enhanced CSPα function could attenuate neurodegenerative diseases

Toll-like receptor stimulation differentially regulates vasoactive intestinal peptide type 2 receptor in macrophages
Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) was originally isolated as a vasodilator intestinal peptide, then as a neuropeptide. In the immune system, VIP is described as an endogenous macrophage-deactivating factor. VIP exerts its immunological actions in a paracrine and/or autocrine manner, through specific receptors. However, very little is known about the molecular regulation of VIP type 2 receptor (VPAC2) in the immune system. We now report that different toll-like receptor (TLR) ligands selectively regulate the VPAC2 receptor gene and show a gene repression system controlled by key protein kinase signalling cascades in macrophages. VPAC2 gene expression is regulated by gram-positive (TLR2 ligands) and gram-negative bacteria wall constituents (TLR4 ligands). Moreover, VPAC2 is tightly regulated: TLR2- or TLR2/6- but not TLR2/1-mediated mechanisms are responsible for the induction of VPAC2. TLR stimulation by viral or bacterial nucleic acids did not modify the VPAC2 mRNA levels. Remarkably, imiquimod – a synthetic TLR7 ligand – led to a potent up-regulation of VPAC2 gene expression. TLR5 stimulation by flagellin present in gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria did not affect VPAC2 mRNA. The p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) activity accounted for the TLR4-mediated induction of VPAC2 gene expression. Surprisingly, our data strongly suggest for the first time a tightly repressed control of VPAC2 mRNA induction by elements downstream of MAPK kinase 1/2, PI3K/Akt, and particularly Jun-NH2-terminal kinase signalling pathways
Functional toll-like receptor 4 overexpression in papillary thyroid cancer by MAPK/ERK-induced ETS1 transcriptional activity
Emerging evidence suggests that unregulated Toll-like receptors (TLRs) signaling promotes tumor survival signals, thus favoring tumor progression. Here, the mechanism underlying TLR4 overexpression in papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTCs) mainly harboring the BRAFV600E mutation was studied. TLR4 was over expressed in PTCs compared to non-neoplastic thyroid tissue. Moreover, paired clinical specimens of primary PTC and its lymph node metastasis showed a significant up regulation of TLR4 levels in the metastatic tissues. In agreement, conditional BRAFV600E expression in normal rat thyroid cells and mouse thyroid tissue up regulated TLR4 expression levels. Furthermore, functional TLR4 expression was demonstrated in PTC cells by increased NF-κB transcriptional activity in response to the exogenous TLR4-agonist lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Of note, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) data analysis revealed that BRAFV600E-positive tumors with high TLR4 expression were associated with shorter disease-free survival. Transcriptomic data analysis indicated a positive correlation between TLR4 expression levels and MAPK/ERK signaling activation. Consistently, chemical blockade of MAPK/ERK signaling abrogated BRAFV600E-induced TLR4 expression. A detailed study of the TLR4 promoter revealed a critical MAPK/ERK-sensitive Ets binding-site involved in BRAFV600E responsiveness. Subsequent investigation revealed that the Ets-binding factor ETS1 is critical for BRAFV600E-induced MAPK/ERK signaling-dependent TLR4 gene expression. Together, these data indicate that functional TLR4 over expression in PTCs is a consequence of thyroid tumor-oncogenic driver dysregulation of MAPK/ERK/ETS1 signaling.Fil: Peyret, Victoria.
Martín Arroyo, M.; Fernandez García, I.; Gonzalez Perea, R.; García Morillo, J.; Rodríguez Díaz, J.; Camacho Poyato, E.; Montesinos Barrios, P.
