Five locations in the central Bay of Bengal (BoB) along a longitudinal transect at 88E were sampled during the Fall Intermonsoon, 2002 for mesozooplankton biomass, abundance, groups and copepod species composition. Stations at 9N and 18N had signatures of cold-core eddies. Despite the notion that biological productivity in the BoB is poor, the mesozooplankton biomass (57-185 mM C m–2) and abundance (33-171 [× 103] individuals m–2) in the upper 1000 m were high and are close to the annual averages reported from the central Arabian Sea. The cold-core eddy at 9N led to elevated chlorophyll a (maximum 0.4 mg m–3) and mesozooplankton biomass up to 36 mg C m–3 in the mixed layer. The biomass at the other cold-core eddy station at 18N was not as high as that at 9N, due to lower chl a levels apparently due to light limitation caused by turbidity. Based on the spatial distribution of copepods (\u3e70% of the total mesozooplankton abundance), the 9N station and the 18N and 20N stations differed completely from the in-between stations at 12N and 15N. While the number of copepod species was the highest at 9N, diversity and evenness were the lowest due to the predominance of Oncaea venusta (26%) and Paracalanus indicus (25%). The lowest species richness with highest evenness was observed at 18N probably due to the oxygen depletion at shallower depths (5 μM between 80 and 500 m). Species richness and diversity were the highest at the noneddy location 12N, where biomass (60 mM C m–2) and abundance (70 × 103 individuals m–2) were lower. Of the eight most abundant species, Oncaea venusta (21%), Paracalanus indicus (19%), P. aculeatus, Oithona similis, Corycaeus danae and Eucalanus monachus were abundant in the upper 200 m of the two cold-core eddy stations, whereas Pleuromamma indica and Lucicutia flavicornis were abundant throughout the upper 1000 m north of 15N. Though many groups (26) and as many as 170 copepod species were recorded during this study, copepod species richness diminished with the dwindling dissolved oxygen concentrations north of 15N. It is inferred that in the intensely stratified surface waters of the central BoB, cold-core eddies are important for promoting considerable biological production

Possui um catálogo de exposição, intitulado, Heimweh!, apenas consultável na biblioteca da FBAUL (cota TES 352 (1))Tese de mestrado, Estudos curatoriais, 2010, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Belas ArtesThis MA thesis describes the work of Alda Veronica Galsterer as an independent curator working in Portugal, specifically mapping her first exhibition from conception to organization and through to production. Titled “Heimweh/Saudade. Young German and Portuguese artists looking for a new dialectic between Heimweh and Saudade”, her first show was held at the off-space Plataforma Revólver (September 24th - November 7th, 2009). Drawing upon her own experience, the author seeks to develop useful guidelines for other young independent curators. First introduced to the idea and concept behind the exhibition, the reader will then be familiarized with the path towards achieving the ultimate goal of opening the exhibition – including essential steps along the way, such as production, fundraising and finance, insurance, transport, text writing, installation, etc. The reader will learn about parallel activities implemented by the curator to dynamize the exhibition: guided tours, a catalogue launch and a panel discussion, chaired by the curator herself. A chapter dedicated to the critique of this exhibition, aims to familiarize the reader with the expectations of all those involved in the project and how these expectations were met. The conclusion of this thesis offers detailed guidelines for young independent curators at the beginning of their career

Identificando o assunto dos documentos em coleções textuais utilizando termos compostos

    Get PDF

The complexity of social practices in social housing is the result not only of the created urban environment, with the combination of social inequality, peripheral inclusion and insecurity, but mainly of the administration and maintenance of this inequality. The article demonstrates that the modus operandi of building housing complexes, without paying attention to social practices and without encouraging social groups to be actors in their own contexts, is a practice that needs to be overcome. There is a need to consider the social relationship created and made possible by open spaces, which need to be thought of for social practice, and to avoid limitations of social practices, which lead to (dis)practice, a concept presented in this article. It seeks to illustrate the importance of considering social practices and the design of open spaces in social housing policies. It is recognized that, although these are not sufficient to resolve the various issues arising in contexts of urban and social vulnerability, they are key to enabling greater changes

Imaging Features And Treatment Of An Intradural Lumbar Cystic Schwannoma.

Spinal schwannomas are frequently observed among patients treated in a reference neurosurgery center. Cystic spinal schwannomas, however, are very scantly found. Due to its indolent behavior and benign course, the diagnosis of schwannomas may pose a challenge to the care giver, and the imaging findings can be misleading. In this article, we illustrate an example of a pauci-symptomatic 55 year-old male patient whose complaint was solely a non specific lumbar pain. Investigation revealed a large cystic lesion comprising the lower lumbar intradural space. He was then treated with microneurosurgical technique involving complete removal of the tumor and reconstruction of the dura mater. Histological and immunohistochemical diagnosis were consistent with cystic schwannoma. The patient presented with complete recovery of his symptom. In this article we aim to emphasize the clinical presentation and treatment of lumbar spine schwannomas, and to illustrate the imaging findings within this uncommon case.63681-

Triterpenes and the Antimycobacterial Activity of Duroia macrophylla

    Get PDF
Duroia macrophylla popularly known as “cabeça-de-urubú,” “apuruí,” or “puruí-grande-da-mata” occurs in the Amazon Forest. Its leaves and branches were collected twice and extracted with dichloromethane and methanol. All extracts were subjected to phytochemical investigation and terpenes and flavonoids were found in all dichloromethane and methanol extracts, respectively. Methanol extracts from both branches (1st collection) and leaves (2nd collection) presented hydrolyzed tannins, yet alkaloids were only detected in the dichloromethane and methanol extracts from branches at the 2nd collection. Phenol compounds were found in both dichloromethane extracts' collections. The action of every extract was assayed against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (RMPr, H37Rv, and INHr strains), showing that the dichloromethane extract from leaves (1st collection) has the major biological activity, with a MIC of 6.25 μg/mL for the INHr strain, 25.0 μg/mL for the RMPr strain, and ≤6.25 μg/mL for the H37Rv strain. The chromatographic fractioning of the dichloromethane extract from leaves (1st collection) yielded the isolation of two triterpenes: oleanolic and ursolic acids, which were identified by NMR analysis and reported for the first time in the Duroia genus

Green, transparent and flexible electrolyte films composed of a Bombyx mori silk fibroin (SF) host biopolymer doped with glycerol (G), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO, D) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([Bmim]PF6) ionic liquid (IL), were synthesized. The materials were represented by the notation SF@GD@ILx (x = 15, 20 and 30 is the mass ratio of SF/[Bmim]PF6 in %). SF@, SF@G, SF@D and SF@GD samples were also prepared. DMSO was found to play a dual-role, acting as solvent of [Bmim]PF6, and enhancing ionic conductivity. DMSO, alone or combined with [Bmim]PF6, led to the increase of the mean roughness and induced the formation of more ordered Silk II conformations (beta-sheets). No structural modifications were detected in the SF@GD@ILx samples upon increasing the temperature up to 100 degrees C. The highest ionic conductivity was exhibited by the IL-rich sample SF@GD@IL30 (1.07 and 4.61 mS cm(-1), at 22 and 100 degrees C, respectively). In the [Bmim]PF6-doped electrolytes "free" and coordinated PF6- ions coexist. The weight losses occurring below 200 degrees C involved essentially the release of adsorbed water and DMSO. The suitable mechanical properties, high ionic conductivity and good electrochemical stability suggest that these electrolytes are attractive candidates for application in electrochemical devices.Veronica de Zea Bermudez would like to express her gratitude to Professor Michel Armand who, during her PhD thesis at Grenoble (1989-1992), was an endless source of ideas that made her work productive and stimulating.
