Searching for olive mill waste water (OMWW) solutions: is there a potential on microalgae treatment?

    Get PDF
Olive Mill Waste Water (OMWW) is the principal industry extraction residue of olive oil and still one of the most serious environmental problems [1]. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability growth of Chlorella vulgaris under different OMWW concentrations and assess its phenolic content variations to get OMWW toxicity reduction

    Ten-year follow-up of a giant prolactinoma

Giant prolactinomas are rare pituitary tumours of which management can be a challenge. A 28-year-old man presented with headaches, visual impairment and behavioural changes. Clinically, the patient was found to have hypogonadism and bitemporal hemianopsia. A MRI demonstrated a pituitary tumour 76 mm in diameter and blood tests revealed a serum prolactin of 158 700 µU/mL (reference range 58-254). Initially, a craniotomy was performed. Immunohistochemistry of the tumour identified a prolactinoma with a high proliferative index and the patient was started on treatment with a dopamine agonist. A year later, neurological symptoms worsened due to regrowth of the lesion's cystic component, and so further surgery was performed. After 10 years of treatment with dopamine agonists, the prolactin levels decreased by 96.8%, there was an effective reduction in tumour size, and the neurological signs and symptoms resolved

Photoassociative creation of ultracold heteronuclear 6Li40K* molecules

We investigate the formation of weakly bound, electronically excited, heteronuclear 6Li40K* molecules by single-photon photoassociation in a magneto-optical trap. We performed trap loss spectroscopy within a range of 325 GHz below the Li(2S_(1/2))+K(4P_(3/2)) and Li(2S_(1/2))+K(4P_(1/2)) asymptotic states and observed more than 60 resonances, which we identify as rovibrational levels of 7 of 8 attractive long-range molecular potentials. The long-range dispersion coefficients and rotational constants are derived. We find large molecule formation rates of up to ~3.5x10^7s^(-1), which are shown to be comparable to those for homonuclear 40K_2*. Using a theoretical model we infer decay rates to the deeply bound electronic ground-state vibrational level X^1\Sigma^+(v'=3) of ~5x10^4s^(-1). Our results pave the way for the production of ultracold bosonic ground-state 6Li40K molecules which exhibit a large intrinsic permanent electric dipole moment.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, submitted to EP

Additive manufacturing of bioactive glass in a biodegradable matrix

Bioactive glass can induce a specific and fast response in the human body that supports tissue regeneration. It is possible to control the design of customized bioapplications with advanced technologies. Although currently used in research, only a few of these technologies have been approved by the FDA to be applied in Tissue Engineering. There is dedicated additive manufacturing equipment to manufacture biomaterials. Since they are emerging technologies in emerging fields of application it is necessary to study and develop formulations with suitable processing characteristics [1]. Formulations of bioactive glass (CaO·P2O5·MgO·SiO2 system) in two different biodegradable matrices (polylactide (PLA) and polycaprolactone (PCL)) were prepared and processed by material extrusion process, namely by Fused Filament Fabrication technique.. The polymer (PLA or PCL) involves bioactive particles in biocompatible media and allows to acquire extrudable skills. The formulations with different solid contents (20–50 wt.%) were prepared using a brabender mixer type and were characterized by different techniques (e.g., X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), melt flow index (MFI)). The inorganic particles influence the rheological and thermal properties of bioactive glass composites. The viscosity decreases with the increase of bioactive glass content in the polymer matrix. Mechanical standard samples and scaffolds were printed and characterized. Bioactive glass composites until 40 wt.% of solid content can be printed. The bioactive glass improves the mechanical resistance of composites compared to a neat polymer matrix. However, formulations with high bioactive glass solid content (50 wt.%) showed printing limitations by their brittleness and clogging tendency.publishe

High pressure cell for edge jumping X-ray absorption spectroscopy : Applications to industrial liquid sulfidation of hydrotreatment catalysts

International audienceA new analytical cell to perform liquid sulfidation of HDS catalysts in industrial conditions was developed. It enables the alternate recording of time-resolved Mo and Co K edges X-ray Absorption spectra of bimetallic catalysts under high pressure (30 bar) and temperature (350°C) during the same reaction. Thanks to this cell, a comparative study of the species formed upon gas (1 bar, 15% H 2 S/H 2) and liquid sulfidation (30 bar, H 2 /gas oil/4% DMDS) of a CoMoP/Al 2 O 3 HDS catalyst was carried out, together with a discussion on the evolution of the concentration profiles upon activation. Different Mo and Co-based chemical species are involved during gas and liquid sulfidation. On one hand, in industrial liquid sulfidation, polymolybdate species are transformed into depolymerized oxides, then into an oxysulfide, a MoS x species and finally into MoS 2. On the other hand, gas sulfidation skips the depolymerization process because of the immediate supply of H 2 S at the beginning of the process and proceeds under a stepwise transformation of oxide into oxysulfide, itself into MoS 3 species and finally into MoS 2. Cobalt species under gas sulfidation goes through a CoS 2 intermediate whereas in liquid sulfidation, it is a 4-fold coordinated Co oxide species. Irrespective to the activation route, mixture of Co 9 S 8 and CoMoS is obtained at advanced sulfidation stage (T> 200°C). Graphical Abstract Quick XAS in situ cell Raman Probe H 2 Gas oil + DMDS 350 C 30 bar Synchrotron radiation Co K edge Mo K edge DMDS decomposition CH 4 H 2 S 232 C 284 C 2 Highlights  A high pressure cell has been developed to study the liquid sulfidation of HDS catalyst by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy  Co and Mo local orders are studied alternatively during the same reaction  The sulfidation mechanism depends on the activation process  The sulfidation of Co and Mo in liquid phase mainly occurs when DMDS is decomposed into H 2 S between 225°C and 350°C. Gas sulfidation starts at room temperature and is completed at 400°

Low-cost multipurpose sensor network integrated with iot and webgis for fire safety concerns

    Get PDF
Fire emergencies cause severe damage to Brazilian federal universities. An appropriate and efficient tool to prevent or detect such events early is multisensory networks from the Internet of Things (IoT). In this study, we present the stages of development of a WebGIS system which integrates the IoT that allows the detection and helps manage such incidents. The approach consists of a network of multipurpose sensors that can identify different sources of fire hazards. If a potential source is registered, information about environmental conditions is transmitted in real-time to the system. Depending on the severity level, an alert is issued to WebGIS. Location is represented on a map. The entire system consists of single-board devices. Software components are based on open-source tools. The whole network only needs little power and, therefore, theoretically, could be carried out as an autonomous system powered by batteries. The entire system has been tested with flame, temperature, gas, smoke, and humidity sensors. The experiments allowed us to show its potential, formulate recommendations and indications for future studies
