    Tradition in Continuity: thermal monitoring in vernacular architecture of farmsteads from northeast Portuguese region of Trás-os-Montes

    The study focuses on the identification of a typology of vernacular architecture, characterized by dispersion and isolation on a territory usually associated with concentrated settlements. This paper aims to contribute for understanding how local factors (climate, economy, culture, etc.) influenced vernacular architecture in the northeast of Portugal by analysing the strategies and building solutions that enable it to cope with climatic adversities. Through in situ monitoring temperatures and relative humidity,is attempted to show the potential of the case studies in maintaining the indoor air temperatures within the boundaries of comfort even when the external temperatures are outside the boundaries

    Chylous Ascites due to Mantle Cell Lymphoma

    Chylous ascites is rare and results in accumulation of lymph in the abdominal cavity, due to several mechanisms. The ascitic liquid is milky because of the high concentration of triglycerides (>200 mg/dl). The higher incidence compared to the past is explained by increased survival of patients with cancer and more aggressive surgery. We describe the case of an 87-year-old man admitted to the geriatric ward due to general oedema, chylous ascites and loss of weight, explained by mantle cell lymphoma

    Muscle Activity During the Typical Water Polo Eggbeater Kick

    The muscle activity of the Tibialis Anterior, Gastrocnemius Medialis, Adductor Longus, Vastus Medialis, Tensor Fasciae Latae and Bíceps Femoris muscles in the typical water polo eggbeater kick were evaluated for four national level water polo players. The surface electromyographic (EMG) signals were collected during an intermittent protocol in which the basic position with arms up and horizontal position variants were performed. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics (including ANOVA) were calculated using the p \u3c .05 significance level. We observed that different muscles have different relevance during the eggbeater kick cycle, changing as a function of the movement phase. When comparing the studied three variations of eggbeater kick, differences were noticed within each phase: the outward phase and the power phase seem to impose higher muscular activity than the recovery phase for most of the studied muscles. Considering the eggbeater kick variations, arms up seems to determine higher EMG values while the basic position and the horizontal position seams to show similar EMG values

    O Projeto C4 – Crianças C com Ciência baseia-se na apropriação pelas crianças C de conceitos científicos e tecnológicos, não pela aquisição de conhecimentos per se mas sim pelo despertar do interesse para esses conceitos e pela pertinência e necessidade da sua aquisição. Durante o ano letivo 2017/2018 desenvolveram-se sessões de Tinkering com duas turmas de 1º ano da Escola da Lejana, em Faro. A avaliação feita na escola deu resultados bastante positivos, ainda sustentados pelo êxito das atividades desenvolvidas pelas crianças de etnia cigana para a comunidade em geral (https://www.facebook.com/criancasccomciencia/).     Effect of systemic administration of phytosterol on lacrimal quality of dogs

    The tear lipid layer (oily outer layer) reduces evaporation and prevents tear overflow. In dogs, reductions in the lipid components of this layer (cholesterol, triglycerides and phospholipids) can cause eye serious diseases. In this way, the tear crystallization test analyzes the lacrimal quality, however, it is less used in veterinary. As phytosterol reduces blood cholesterol, the objective of this study was to investigate, through the tear crystallization test, whether the systemic administration of this drug influences the lacrimal quality of healthy dogs and, in addition, to verify differences in the interpretation of the ophthalmic test between different evaluators. Eight beagles, healthy, of both sexes, young and adults, without clinical ophthalmic signs apparent were selected. Basal lacrimal samples (D0) were collected from the right and left eye of all animals with glass capillary tube and arranged on a glass slide for scanning the images and subsequent microscopic analysis. Subsequently, all were medicated with the phytosterol (Collestra® 650 mg: 1 capsule, orally, every 12 hours, for 15 days). After seven (D7) and fifteen (D15) days of this systemic administration, the tear crystallization test in both eyes of all dogs was again performed for statistical comparison with the baseline results. The photographs of the slides were classified by four evaluators (AV1 and AV2 with professional experience in ophthalmology and AV3 and AV4 without previous professional experience in ophthalmology), following standards established by Rolando (1984). The results were statistically verified by analysis of simple variance (ANOVA One-Way). There was no statistical difference in the tear crystallization test between the established periods and in relation to the different ophthalmic test evaluators (p≤0.05). Although phytosterols reduce blood cholesterol levels, it was observed in the present study that these drugs when administered systemically did not interfere in the tear lipid layer and, consequently, in the lacrimal quality of healthy dogs, and may be prescribed as lipid-lowering agents for patients with ocular diseases, especially the lacrimal ones

    Arbustus unedo essence: morphological and genetic characterization of the strawberry tree of Castelo de Paiva

    O medronheiro é um arbusto da região mediterrânica que pode ser encontrada por todo o país. Ao contrário do que verifica na região sul do país, no concelho de Castelo de Paiva é atribuída uma reduzida importância económica a esta espécie. Com o intuito de preservar e potenciar a produção desta espécie e contribuir para a dinamização da economia do concelho, procedeu-se à caracterização morfológica e genética de uma amostra da população de medronheiros de Castelo de Paiva. A caracterização morfológica e genética foi realizada para um total de 10 genótipos. Para tal recolheram-se 70 folhas aleatoriamente em cada árvore. Em 40 folhas mediu-se o comprimento, largura, comprimento do pedúnculo, peso fresco, peso seco e determinou-se a área foliar. Dos caracteres morfológicos analisados, aqueles que se revelaram mais úteis na distinção dos vários genótipos foram: comprimento do pedúnculo, peso fresco e peso seco. As restantes 30 folhas foram utilizadas para a caracterização genética. Esta caracterização foi realizada recorrendo a um marcador de DNA, ISSR. Os 5 primeiros exemplaresutilizados na técnica de ISSR demonstraram-se polimórficos. Os resultados da caracterização genética sugerem que a variabilidade genética na população é média a alta.The strawberry tree is a shrub native in the Mediterranean region and it can be found throughout Portugal. Unlike the case in the southern region of the country, in Castelo de Paiva a minor economic importance is given to this species. In order to preserve, to enhance the production of this species and to contribute to the boosting of the economy of the region, we proceeded to the characterization of a small sample population of this fruit tree of Castelo de Paiva in what concerns to its morphology and genetics. The morphological and genetic characterization was performed for a total of 10 genotypes. For this, 70 leaves were randomly collected from each tree. For 40 leaves, it was measured the length, the width, the peduncle length, the wet weight, the dry weight and determined the leaf area. Of the morphological characteristics analyzed, the ones that proved most useful in distinguishing the various genotypes were: the length peduncle, the wet weight and the dry weight. The remaining 30 leaves were used in the genetic characterization. This characterization was performed using a DNA marker, the ISSR. The 5 primers used in the ISSR technique proved to be polymorphic. The results from the genetic characterization suggest that variability in population genetics is medium to high

Allied to this, sustainable developments are playing an increasingly important role in the textile industry. Such concerns led to a new development strategy based on the valorization of bio-based wastes and by-products of different industries, inserting this in the circular economy paradigm. These bio-based wastes and by-products come from several industries, as the agri-food industry. These resources present an enormous potential for valorization in the textile finish due to their intrinsic properties (antimicrobial, prebiotic, antioxidant activity, among others). This chapter will review the latest innovation and textile product development through different by-products and wastes, their main properties and characteristics and the advantages that they offer to the textile industry

    Expedição ao Sítio Histórico e Patrimônio Cultural Kalunga: um Relato de Experiência

    The Kalunga Historical and Cultural Heritage Site (SHPCK) is located in the northeast of Goiás and is considered one of the best-preserved areas of native Cerrado in all of Brazil. This is due to local geographic characteristics and mainly to the sustainable character of agricultural production by the traditional peoples who inhabit the region. In addition to having a vast preserved territory, the Kalungas have unique traditional knowledge about local plants. Due to biodiversity, they have access to herbal plants that can be used in human and animal food. However, the number of species of toxic plants may also considered high. With this report we aim to describe the unique experience that was the Expedition to the Kalunga Historical and Cultural Site and Heritage, as well as to emphasize the importance of the toxic plants of the Cerrado and the appreciation of traditional knowledge.A Comunidade Quilombola Kalunga fixou-se no Sítio Patrimônio Histórico e Cultural Kalunga (SHPCK), localizado no nordeste do estado de Goiás, e é considerada uma das áreas mais bem preservadas de Cerrado nativo em todo o Brasil. Isso se deve à dificuldade de acesso, às características geográficas locais e também ao caráter sustentável da produção agropecuária do povo quilombola que habita a região. Além de possuírem vasto território preservado, os Kalungas detêm conhecimento tradicional singular sobre as plantas locais e, graças à biodiversidade do Cerrado, eles têm acesso a plantas fitoterápicas e que podem ser utilizadas na alimentação humana e animal. No entanto, o número de espécies de plantas tóxicas também pode ser considerado elevado.     MAMMALS IN PORTUGAL : A data set of terrestrial, volant, and marine mammal occurrences in P ortugal

    Mammals are threatened worldwide, with 26% of all species being includedin the IUCN threatened categories. This overall pattern is primarily associatedwith habitat loss or degradation, and human persecution for terrestrial mam-mals, and pollution, open net fishing, climate change, and prey depletion formarine mammals. Mammals play a key role in maintaining ecosystems func-tionality and resilience, and therefore information on their distribution is cru-cial to delineate and support conservation actions. MAMMALS INPORTUGAL is a publicly available data set compiling unpublishedgeoreferenced occurrence records of 92 terrestrial, volant, and marine mam-mals in mainland Portugal and archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira thatincludes 105,026 data entries between 1873 and 2021 (72% of the data occur-ring in 2000 and 2021). The methods used to collect the data were: live obser-vations/captures (43%), sign surveys (35%), camera trapping (16%),bioacoustics surveys (4%) and radiotracking, and inquiries that represent lessthan 1% of the records. The data set includes 13 types of records: (1) burrowsjsoil moundsjtunnel, (2) capture, (3) colony, (4) dead animaljhairjskullsjjaws, (5) genetic confirmation, (6) inquiries, (7) observation of live animal (8),observation in shelters, (9) photo trappingjvideo, (10) predators dietjpelletsjpine cones/nuts, (11) scatjtrackjditch, (12) telemetry and (13) vocalizationjecholocation. The spatial uncertainty of most records ranges between 0 and100 m (76%). Rodentia (n=31,573) has the highest number of records followedby Chiroptera (n=18,857), Carnivora (n=18,594), Lagomorpha (n=17,496),Cetartiodactyla (n=11,568) and Eulipotyphla (n=7008). The data setincludes records of species classified by the IUCN as threatened(e.g.,Oryctolagus cuniculus[n=12,159],Monachus monachus[n=1,512],andLynx pardinus[n=197]). We believe that this data set may stimulate thepublication of other European countries data sets that would certainly contrib-ute to ecology and conservation-related research, and therefore assisting onthe development of more accurate and tailored conservation managementstrategies for each species.     Pervasive gaps in Amazonian ecological research

    Biodiversity loss is one of the main challenges of our time,1,2 and attempts to address it require a clear un derstanding of how ecological communities respond to environmental change across time and space.3,4 While the increasing availability of global databases on ecological communities has advanced our knowledge of biodiversity sensitivity to environmental changes,5–7 vast areas of the tropics remain understudied.8–11 In the American tropics, Amazonia stands out as the world’s most diverse rainforest and the primary source of Neotropical biodiversity,12 but it remains among the least known forests in America and is often underrepre sented in biodiversity databases.13–15 To worsen this situation, human-induced modifications16,17 may elim inate pieces of the Amazon’s biodiversity puzzle before we can use them to understand how ecological com munities are responding. To increase generalization and applicability of biodiversity knowledge,18,19 it is thus crucial to reduce biases in ecological research, particularly in regions projected to face the most pronounced environmental changes. We integrate ecological community metadata of 7,694 sampling sites for multiple or ganism groups in a machine learning model framework to map the research probability across the Brazilian Amazonia, while identifying the region’s vulnerability to environmental change. 15%–18% of the most ne glected areas in ecological research are expected to experience severe climate or land use changes by 2050.
