The quantum ground state of self-organized atomic crystals in optical resonators

    Get PDF
Cold atoms, driven by a laser and simultaneously coupled to the quantum field of an optical resonator, can self-organize in periodic structures. These structures are supported by the optical lattice, which emerges from the laser light they scatter into the cavity mode, and form when the laser intensity exceeds a threshold value. We study theoretically the quantum ground state of these structures above the pump threshold of self-organization, by mapping the atomic dynamics of the self-organized crystal to a Bose-Hubbard model. We find that the quantum ground state of the self-organized structure can be the one of a Mott-insulator or a superfluid, depending on the pump strength of the driving laser. For very large pump strengths, where the intracavity intensity is maximum and one would expect a Mott-insulator state, we find intervals of parameters where the system is superfluid. These states could be realized in existing experimental setups.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

Non-linear optics with two trapped atoms

We show theoretically that two atomic dipoles in a resonator constitute a non-linear medium, whose properties can be controlled through the relative position of the atoms inside the cavity and the detuning and intensity of the driving laser. We identify the parameter regime where the system operates as a parametric amplifier, based on the cascade emission of the collective dipole of the atoms, and determine the corresponding spectrum of squeezing of the field at the cavity output. This dynamics could be observed as a result of self-organization of laser-cooled atoms in resonators.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure

The experience that is part of the activities of innovative educational project contemporary art space as resource Teaching in Early Childhood Education , developed during 2011-2012 . the whose main objectives were , first , to work in Education Artistic experiences through contemporary art in other contexts and for another , build roads and collaboration between three institutions . El objetivo del tratamiento fisioterápico por medio de miofeedback fue el de obtener la oclusión del párpado izquierdo y posibilitar la disociación de ambos párpados, objetivo logrado al cabo de 30 sesiones de tratamiento.[Abstract] In September 1994 a patient was admitted to our unit o/ the School o/ Physical Therapy o/ A Coruña, Spain, after surgery in December 1990 for neuroma o/the VIII cranial pair, confirmed as total by electromyography In January 1994, the left temporal muscle was transposed to obtain dynamic suspension o/ the buccal commissure and ocular occlusion during mastication. The school burnout of children, defined as physical and mental exhaustion due to a lack of adjustment to the educational context, constitutes a serious problem in contemporary education. Thus, the determination of the elements that influence it and the possible strategies for avoiding it are key in the process of improving children’s well-being. A descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 569 children aged 8 to 13 at eight primary education schools in Granada (Spain). With the aim of examining the association between the possible exhaustion of children and planned tutoring and guidance activities, a structural equation model (SEM) as the analytical technique was used. The results show good fit indices for the model (comparative fit index (CFI) = 0.955; normalised fit index (NFI) = 0.956; incremental fit index (IFI) = 0.946; root mean squared error approximation (RMSEA) = 0.089), which reflects the need for tutoring and guidance activities that are infused throughout the entire teaching process in order to preserve children’s well-being.XXVI Program for supporting practical teaching, Vice-Rectorate for Teaching and Learning, University of Granada (Spain) 625/E/

Observational study[Abstract] Purpose: To describe the epidemiology of critical disease in HIV-infected patients during the current highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) era and to identify hospital mortality predictors. Methods: A longitudinal, retrospective observational study was made of HIV-infected adults admitted to the ICU in two Spanish hospitals between 1 January 2000 and 31 December 2014. Demographic and HIV-related variables were analyzed, together with comorbidities, severity scores, reasons for admission and need for organ support. The chi-squared test was used to compare categorical variables, while continuous variables were contrasted with the Student's t-test, Mann-Whitney U-test or Kruskal-Wallis test, assuming an alpha level=0.05. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to calculate odds ratios for assessing correlations to mortality during hospital stay. Joinpoint regression analysis was used to study mortality trends over time. Results: A total of 283 episodes were included for analyses. Hospital mortality was 32.9% (95%CI: 21.2-38.5). Only admission from a site other than the Emergency Care Department (OR 3.64, 95%CI: 1.30-10.20; p=0.01), moderate-severe liver disease (OR 5.65, 95%CI: 1.11-28.87; p=0.04) and the APACHE II score (OR 1.14, 95%CI: 1.04-1.26; p<0.01) and SOFA score at 72h (OR 1.19, 95%CI: 1.02-1.40; p=0.03) maintained a statistically significant relationship with hospital mortality. Conclusions: Delayed ICU admission, comorbidities and the severity of critical illness determine the prognosis of HIV-infected patients admitted to the ICU. Based on these data, HIV-infected patients should receive the same level of care as non-HIV-infected patients, regardless of their immunological or nutritional condition.[Resumen] Objetivos. Incluimos 283 episodios.

Quantum stability of self-organized atomic insulator-like states in optical resonators

We investigate a paradigm example of cavity quantum electrodynamics with many body systems: an ultracold atomic gas inside a pumped optical resonator. In particular, we study the stability of atomic insulator-like states, confined by the mechanical potential emerging from the cavity field spatial mode structure. As in open space, when the optical potential is sufficiently deep, the atomic gas is in the Mott-like state. Inside the cavity, however, the potential depends on the atomic distribution, which determines the refractive index of the medium, thus altering the intracavity field amplitude. We derive the effective Bose-Hubbard model describing the physics of the system in one dimension and study the crossover between the superfluid -- Mott insulator quantum states. We determine the regions of parameters where the atomic insulator states are stable, and predict the existence of overlapping stability regions corresponding to competing insulator-like states. Bistable behavior, controlled by the pump intensity, is encountered in the vicinity of the shifted cavity resonance.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures. Replaced with revised version.
