Poliquetos (Annelida: Polychaeta) como indicadores biológicos de contaminación marina: casos en Colombia

    Get PDF

Lean Thinking to Foster the Transition from Traditional Logistics to the Physical Internet

This paper studies the relationship between Lean paradigms and the Physical Internet (PI). Lean thinking is a philosophy that allows one to obtain the right amount of the right items in the right place at the right time; it seeks to minimize waste and is flexible to change. In fact, applying Lean not only helps to reduce costs, but it also adds value and improves results across the supply chain. By using a value stream map, we can map the process from the supply chain to the customer, while trying not to add value activities. Such activities include excessive production, overstorage, waiting times poorly adjusted to needs, defects and rejects that require reprocessing, and, finally, unnecessary transport and movements. Storage, waiting times, and unnecessary transport and movements are at the core of the PI. A value stream map can also help to identify empty transport and unnecessary CO(2)emissions. This study analyzes value stream mapping as a tool that can enable the objectives of the different Alliance for Logistics Innovation through Collaboration (ALICE) roadmaps for logistics innovation to be achieved, and can also allow PI principles to be reached on the established dates

The anti-skid resistance of six coatings (Alfa, Beta, Gamma, Lambda, Mu and Theta) designed for outdoor wood flooring were tested in chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) and pine (Pinus pinaster Ait.) using a Portable Skid Resistance Tester according to standard ENV 12633. Film thickness, coating retention level, and presence of mineral particles were determined for each coating. Furthermore, the liquid water absorption coefficient of chestnut was determined in accordance with standard UNE-EN 1609, to relate all parameters. The highest value of skid resistance in both chestnut and pine was obtained with coating Mu (49.75) and coating Gamma (53.16), respectively. Film thickness and coating retention level were consistently higher for pine than for chestnut. Gamma presented the highest presence of minerals. For chestnut the absorption coefficient of liquid water in the tangential direction was 0.0056 ± 0.0010 kg·m-2·s-0.5, considerably lower than the value found for pine: 0.011 kg·m-2·s-0.5. The different performance of the system wood-coating, and consequently the anti-skid resistance, was attributed to the absorption properties of the different species

1 poster presented at the 24th International ICFMH Conference, Food Micro 2014, 1-4 Septembre, Nantes, FranceIn the present study, three different mixed·species Listeria monocytogenes-carrying blofilms previously isolated from surfaces of seafood, meat and dairies Industrial environments were selected in order to test the efficiency of cleanlng and disinfection procedures based on the combination of an enzymatic solution, followed by a treatment with benzalkonium chloride (BAC). Biofilm samples were cultured onto AISI-316 type stainless steel 1 cm2 coupons In a batch system at 25° C. The effect of sequential exposure to different concentrations of Pronase- BAC, Cellulase - BAC or DNAsel - BAC solutions was then assessed in mature biofilms after 168 hours using an orthogonal first order experimental design. Samples were stained using FilmTracerTM LIVE/DEAD Blofllm viability kit (lnvitrogen} and the efficiency of each treatment was then determined by epifluorescence mlcroscopy and subsequent image anatysls of 25·field mosaics representing a total surface of 1.92 mm2, so as to quantify the total area occupied by living and damaged cells attached to the surface. Significant empirical equations obtained reveals that synergistic effects between Pronase - BAC on biofilms coming from flsh and dairy industries obtaining almost a total cell detachment in the latter case. No significant effect was observed among the Cellulase - BAC procedures in the experimental DNAse - BAC against biofilms coming from fish and dairy industries compared with the other two combinations enzyme- benzalkoniom chloride was also demonstrated even with no effect against the consortium isolated from meat industry These results show how the usage of customised treatments combining commerclally available enzymes with classical chemlcally-based disinfection procedures may represent an attractive and efficient alternative against bacterial blofilms present in the food IndustryThis research was financially supported by the Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (ENZYMONO, AGL2010-22212-C02-12). Clarifying the concept of chronic kidney disease for non-nephrologists

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) expands the prior concept of chronic renal insufficiency by including patients with relatively preserved renal function, as assessed by the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), as even these early CKD stages are associated with an increased risk for all-cause death and cardiovascular death, CKD progression and acute kidney injury. A decreased eGFR (3 months. However, when eGFR is 60 mL/min/1.73m2, an additional criterion is required to diagnose CKD. In a recent clinical trial published in The New England Journal of Medicine, all 6190 participants were reported to have CKD: 47% had Stages 1 and 2 CKD and 53% had Stage 3 CKD. This illustrates a widespread misunderstanding of the concept of CKD. Moreover, CKD categories in this study were assigned based on the estimated creatinine clearance. Since both estimated creatinine clearance and creatinine clearance overestimate eGFR, this illustrates another frequent misunderstanding: equating GFR with creatinine clearance. In this commentary, we clarify the concept of CKD and of CKD categories for non-nephrologists. Assigning a diagnosis of CKD to a patient with normal renal function and absence of other evidence of CKD may have negative consequences for the individual (e.g. insurance and others) as well as for the medical community at large by creating confusion about the concept. This research was supported by FIS PI16/02057, ISCIII-RETIC REDinREN RD016/0009 FEDER funds, Sociedad Española de Nefrología, Fundación Renal Iñigo Ávarez de Toledo (FRIAT), ISCIII Rio Hortega (MVPG) and Comunidad de Madrid Biomedicina B2017/BMD-3686 CIFRA2-CM

Decline in fertility induced by economic recession in Spain

    Get PDF
OBJECTIVE: To describe trends in fertility in Spain before (pre-recession; 1998-2008) and during (recession period; 2009-2013) the economic crisis of 2008, taking into account women's age and regional unemployment in 2010. METHOD: The study consisted of a panel design including cross-sectional ecological data for the 17 regions of Spain. We describe fertility trends in Spain in two time periods, pre-recession (1998-2008) and recession (2009-2013). We used a cross-sectional, ecological study of Spanish-born women to calculate changes in fertility rates for each period using a linear regression model adjusted for year, period, and interaction between them. RESULTS: We found that compared to the pre-recession period, the fertility rate in Spain generally decreased during the economic recession. However, in some regions, such as the Canary Islands, this decrease began before the onset of the recession, while in other regions, such as the Basque country, the fertility rate continued to grow until 2011. The effects of the recession on the fertility rate are clearly observed in women aged 30-34 years. CONCLUSIONS: The current economic recession has disrupted the positive trend in fertility that began at the start of this century. Since Spain already had very low fertility rates, the further decline caused by the economic recession could jeopardize the sustainability of welfare-state systems
