    Fractal Analysis of Strain-Induced Microstructures in Metals

    The deformation of materials is a key topic for different industrial sectors. The correlation between specific thermomechanical processes, like extrusion, rolling or additive manufacturing, and the resultant material’s microstructure, is particularly interesting. In these thermomechanical processes, the microstructure of the materials depends mainly on the applied stress, the magnitude of strain achieved in a given time period, and the temperature. In the case of metals and alloys, plastic deformation can be described microscopically based on the dynamics of a huge population of moving dislocations. Plasticity is characterized at the mesoscale by the avalanche-like collective behavior of dislocations, which is a typical case of self-organized systems. Dislocations are organized into cells named grains or subgrains that greatly influence the mechanical behavior of metals and alloys. The existence of these fractal structures of dislocations in metals is well established. However, it is very complex to conduct a fractal analysis of these microstructures. This is actually done by looking for a compromise between a detailed description of the complex fractal microstructure and the development of a practical procedure that avoids unaffordable extensive characterization in a different time and spatial scales. Several cases will be described considering different alloys and experimental conditions

    Synthesis of Dipyridylaminoperylenediimide–Metal Complexes and Their Cytotoxicity Studies

    A new family of perylenediimide (PDI) silver and copper complexes has been successfully synthesized by reacting ortho- and bay-substituted (dipyrid-2′,2″-ylamino)perylenediimide ligands with metal phosphine fragments. The coordination of the metal center did not reveal a significant effect on the photophysical properties, which are mainly due to the PDI ligands, and in some cases quenching of the luminescence was observed. The antiproliferative effect of the free perylenediimide ligands and the metalloPDI complexes against the cervix cancer cell line HeLa was determined by MTT assay. The free perylenediimide ligands exhibited a moderate cytotoxic activity, but the coordination of silver or copper to the dypyridylamino fragment greatly enhanced the activity, suggesting a synergistic effect between the two fragments. In attempts to elucidate the cellular biodistribution of the PDIs and the complexes, a colocalization experiment using specific dyes for the lysosomes or mitochondria as internal standards revealed a major internalization inside the cell for the metal complexes, as well as a partial mitochondrial localization

    [ES] En este Trabajo Final de Master se aborda y explora el concepto de la imagen de la mujer en los videojuegos actuales, acotándola en algunas de las obras más populares entre los años 2018 y 2020. Se utilizará la propia representación femenina en el ámbito de los videojuegos como contexto, exponiendo un conjunto de estereotipos y de ideales tanto visuales como conceptuales que nos ayudarán a comprender en conjunto las diversas formas en las que se ha representado la figura de la mujer en este género a lo largo de los años con una visión crítica y feminista. Para ello se realizará un estudio de la presencia de la mujer en el arte, su revolución, influencia y diversos referentes que generaron un impacto en el ámbito artístico. La identidad femenina y de género, así como la propia comprensión del feminismo en el siglo XXI, será clave para generar un marco contextualizado acorde con los planteamientos de este trabajo. Se utilizarán referentes de interés como Nan Goldin, Paula Rego o Cindy Sherman entre otros, empleando sus obras como objeto de estudio. Se cuestionarán conceptos como los estereotipos, los cánones y la propia idealización de la figura femenina para comprender cómo se ha representado hasta ahora a la mujer y cómo ha influido en su imagen actual en medios como el videojuego, haciendo uso de diferentes referentes bibliográficos como El Género en Disputa (1990) de Judith Butler o diversas monografías escritas de autoras como Marina Amores, Teresa Alario o Amelia Valcárcel entre otros. Se tratará de igual forma la discriminación en la industria y sus consecuencias en las claves estéticas y conceptuales del videojuego, así como el espacio feminista y sus influencias en busca de una representación femenina alejada de convencionalismos obsoletos. Así pues, el fin de este estudio reside en comprobar, exponer y reafirmar esa presencia discriminatoria presente en el ámbito del videojuego, así como en señalar la mutación que antiguas formas de discriminación han tomado a lo largo de los años para pasar desapercibidas o ser toleradas en este género, y como ello afecta al apartado visual y artístico de las obras producidas.[EN] This Master's Final Paper addresses and explores the concept of the image of women in current video games, delimiting it in some of the most popular titles between the years 2018 and 2020. Female representation in the field of video games will be used as a context, exposing a set of stereotypes and both visual and conceptual ideals that will help us understand as a whole the various ways in which the figure of women has been represented in this genre over the years with a critical and feminist vision. To this end, a study will be made of the presence of women in art, their revolution, influence and diverse referents that generated an impact in the artistic field. The feminine and gender identity, as well as the understanding of feminism in the XXI century, will be key to generate a contextualized framework in accordance with the approaches of this work. We will use references of interest such Nan Goldin, Paula Rego or Cindy Sherman among others, using their work as an object of study. Concepts such as stereotypes, canons and the idealization of the female figure itself will be questioned to understand how women have been represented so far and how it has influenced their current image in media such as video games, making use of different bibliographical references such as Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity (1990) by Judith Butler or various monographs written by authors such as Marina Amores, Teresa Alario or Amelia Valcárcel, among others. Discrimination in the industry and its consequences in the aesthetic and conceptual keys of the video game will also be discussed, as well as the feminist space and its influences in search of a female representation away from obsolete conventionalisms. Thus, the purpose of this study is to verify, expose and reaffirm this discriminatory presence present in the field of video games, as well as to point out the mutation that old forms of discrimination have taken over the years to go unnoticed or be tolerated in this genre, and how this affects the visual and artistic section of the works produced.Garcés Fernández, L.     Estimate of soil hydraulic properties from disc infiltrometer threedimensional infiltration curve: theoretical analysis and field applicability

The definitive version is available at: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/18780296/19/supp/CThis paper describes a new method (NSQE) to estimate soil hydraulic properties (sorptivity, S, and hydraulic conductivity, K) from full-time cumulative infiltration curves. The technique relies on an inverse procedure involving the quasi-exact equation of Haverkamp et al. (1994). The numerical resolution is described and the sensitivity of the method is theoretically evaluated, showing that the accuracy of the estimates depends on the measured infiltration time. A new procedure to detect and remove the effect of the contact sand layer on the cumulative infiltration curve is also given. The method was subsequently compared to the differentiated linearization procedure (DL), which calculate K and S from the simplified Haverkamp et al. (1994) equation, valid only for short to medium times. A total of 264 infiltration measurements performed with a 10cm diameter disc under different soil conditions were used. Compared to the DL procedure, field measurements showed that the NSQE method allowed better estimates of soil hydraulic properties, independently on the infiltration noise and the presence of contact sand layer. Overall, although comparable S values were estimated with both methods, the longer infiltration times allowed by the proposed method made this procedure more accurate estimations of K.     Biodiversity patterns of free-living marine nematodes in a tropical bay: Cienfuegos, Caribbean Sea

    Spatial and temporal biodiversity patterns of free-living marine nematodes were studied in Cienfuegos Bay, a tropical semi-enclosed basin in the Caribbean Sea. Taxonomic (to species level) and functional (biological trait) approaches were applied for describing the assemblage structure and relating it to abiotic environment based on a sampling scheme in six subtidal stations and three months. Biological trait approach added relevant information to species pattern regarding relationships between diversity patterns and the abiotic environment. The most common morphotypes were deposit feeding nematodes, with colonising abilities of 2–3 (in a scale from 1 to 5), tail conical cylindrical or filiforme and body slender; and their abundance were correlated with depth, organic matter and silt/clay fraction. In spite of a high turnover of species, functional diversity of assemblages did not change notably in space and time. A result probably due to sampling of the habitat pool of species and to low heterogeneity of the studied muddy bottoms. Chemical pollution (organic enrichment and heavy metals) and hydrodynamic regime possibly drove the biodiversity patterns. Spatial distribution of assemblages support the existence of two well differentiated basins inside the bay, the northern basin more polluted than the southern one. The low hydrodynamic regime would determine a poor dispersion of nematodes resulting in high spatial variance in the assemblage structure; and also the associated hypoxic conditions and pollutants in sediments can explain the dominance of tolerant nematode species such as Daptonema oxycerca, Sabatieria pulchra, Terschellingia gourbaultae, and Terschellingia longicaudata. A comparison of spatial– temporal patterns of biodiversity between Cienfuegos Bay and other semi-enclosed bays in temperate regions suggests several similarities: nematode assemblages are strongly influenced by anthropogenic disturbance, temporal trends are weak or overridden by spatial ones, and few cosmopolitan genera/ species tolerant to pollution and hypoxic conditions are dominant

    Extension of Santa Cristina's seaside promenade over its eastern dyke

    [Resumen:] Las obras que se describen en este TFG afectan al extremo Este de la playa de Santa Cristina, término municipal de Oleiros, provincia de A Coruña. Con ellas se conseguiría la ampliación del paseo marítimo que, en la actualidad, por su extremo Este remata a la altura de la calle Polvorín, en la zona antiguamente ocupada por el embarcadero de la lancha de pasajeros que hacía el trayecto entre esta playa y la ciudad de A Coruña. En esa zona existen dos diques escollera rectilíneos y paralelos entre sí; un espigón que nace al final del paseo y muy próximo nace otro exento, sin conexión con tierra. Se pretende unir ambos diques por sus extremos más próximos mediante una pasarela peatonal y habilitar sus plataformas superiores para prolongar el paseo existente. Las obras descritas no afectarían a su función de control de la dinámica litoral y sin embargo añadirían un atractivo especial a esa zona con un paseo que se adentraría en el mar un centenar de metros. Por otra parte, con pequeñas y económicas intervenciones futuras se podría añadir un pequeño pantalán para uso de pequeñas embarcaciones deportivas o de paseo. Todo ello contribuiría a hacer más atractiva la playa y zonas de esparcimiento adyacentes para la población local y visitante. Las obras propuestas comenzarían por la adecuación de la plataforma superior de los diques mediante la construcción de una losa base de hormigón armado para regularizar la superficie de escollera y conformar los viales del paseo. Como remate de ambas losas y en sus extremos más próximos se construiría la cimentación y estribos de apoyo de la pasarela peatonal que las uniría sin apoyos intermedios y daría continuidad a todo el paseo. La distancia a salvar entre diques da como resultado una pasarela de 38.40 m de luz entre apoyos y una sección de 4.00x3.00 m. Sus amplias dimensiones proporcionan una sección con mejor comportamiento resistente y la continuidad del paseo sin angosturas que hace más agradable el paseo peatonal. La estructura base de la pasarela se compone de dos celosías laterales tipo Pratt con sus cordones superior e inferior unidos por vigas traveseras que en la base dan apoyo a un tablero construido con viguetas y entablado de madera. El conjunto está diseñado con perfiles metálicos huecos de sección rectangular que dan una imagen limpia y de ligereza a la pasarela y leve impacto visual en el paisaje. Los viales quedarían acabados en hormigón fratasado y con tratamiento superficial antideslizante y todo el perímetro del paseo se protegería con barandillas de acero inoxidable, incluso el tablero de la pasarela. El conjunto se complementa con bancos, papeleras, luminarias y demás mobiliario urbano que hace más cómodo y agradable el uso y disfrute del paseo.Traballo fin de grao (UDC.ETSECCP).
