    Attitudes of undergraduate nursing students to cultural diversity: (Portuguese-Spanish) in a transboundary context.

    Our main goal was to identify the attitudes of nursing students to cultural diversity in a healthcare setting, and find the potential relationship between this and the students' national background and their knowledge of cultural diversity. A descriptive observational study comparing two culturally different populations within a cross-border area (Algarve-Huelva) was conducted. The attitudes of the participants were measured across six categories: this study will describe the most significant ones. The cultural context is essential to the development of attitudes to immigration. Nursing care is a communicative act and encountering the "other" the core of the nursing professionals' work.     Análisis biomecánico de la carrera tras 40km de bici en competición

    En triatlón, una de las partes más duras y estratégicas del deporte es la transición del ciclismo a la carrera a pie. El principal problema de los estudios analizados es que han sido llevados a cabo en laboratorios, donde la poca especificidad de los tests utilizados representan un handicap. Tanto las variables fisiológicas (lactato y frecuencia cardiaca) como la velocidad muestran diferencias considerables entre los valores obtenidos en estudios de laboratorio y los obtenidos en competición. Por otro lado ya hay quien reclama la necesidad de realizar este tipo de estudios en situación real de competición, donde los triatletas se encuentran motivados plenamente y el esfuerzo es totalmente específico y máximo [1]. Por tanto, los objetivos del presente estudio fueron: a) analizar si existen diferencias en la biomecánica de carrera en comparando los valores obtenidos en competición con los de los estudios realizados en laboratorios; b) analizar si la eficiencia de carrera desciende en las primeras vueltas debido al ciclismo previo; y c) examinar las posibles diferencias que pudieran existir entre hombres y mujeres. Los resultados muestran diferencias significativas (p<0,05) entre géneros para la mayoría de las variables estudiadas. Asimismo, existen diferencias significativas (p<0,05) para la longitud de ciclo y la velocidad de los chicos entre vueltas.The most strategic part of a triathlon is the cycle-run transition. According to the references found in the bibliography it is important to remark that authors have used non-specific tests, because physiological (lactate and heart rate) and velocity variables have shown considerable differences between the values obtained from laboratory-based studies and those from real competition. However, there is a need to perform these kind of studies in competition, when the triathletes are highly motivated and the effort is maximum [1] Therefore, the objectives of the present study were: A) to analyze the kinematic changes in running pattern comparing competition with laboratory-based studies; B) to analyse if the running efficiency drops at the first laps due to the previous cycling; C) to examine the possible differences between men and women. The results show significant differences (p<0.05) between men and women in many of the variables studied. Also, significant differences (p<0.05) were found in men’s stride length and velocity between laps.Peer Reviewe

    Temperature and particle concentration influence on the complex viscous behavior of a hydrophilic fumed silica suspension

    Shear-thinning behavior (decrease of the apparent steady viscosity with shear) due to breaking of weak particle flocs and posterior alignment of individual particles in layers parallel to the flow direction is usually observed before the appearance of the shear-thickening behavior (increase of the apparent steady viscosity with shear). The shear-thickening behavior is mainly due to the dominant role played by hydrodynamic over Brownian and colloidal forces at relatively high shear. As a rule, the onset of shear-thickening behavior and the maximum viscosity value appear at lower shear rates when solid concentration increases, and temperature decreases. However, the influence of solid concentration and temperature on shear stress characteristic values have received less attention despite being the shear stress the true cause of microstructure changes that can provoke the appearance of the shear-thickening behaviour. A recently published empirical equation for the shear stress dependence of the steady viscosity of shear thickening fluids [T. Shende, V.J. Niasar, M. Babaei, J. Mol. Liq. 325 (2021) 115220] has been used for fitting experimental data (MARSIII, Thermo-Haake, Germany) of a hydrophilic fumed silica suspension (A200 (Evonik, Germany) in PPG400 (Sigma-Aldrich, Germany)). The influence of temperature (10,\ 30,\ 50,\ 70\degc) and solid concentration (10,\ 15,\ 20,\ 25%\ wt) on the shear-thickening behavior has been monitored recording their influence on the model parameters.Universidad de Málaga.     New database to select phase change materials: chemical nature, properties, and applications

    Today, thermal energy storage materials are proposed as a promising solution to increase the energy efficiency in building sector and to reduce the total energy demand because building sector accounts up to 34% of total energy consumption. Under this situation, phase change materials (PCM) are well-considered as materials to store energy allowing high energy densities (between 50 and 600 MJ/cm3). Available materials to be used as PCM for building application in literature were added to a database for to be used with CES Selector software. More than three hundred PCM whit phase change temperatures between −50 °C and 150 °C and considering commercial and non-commercial PCM were listed and classified by their properties and the values available of the materials have been introduced in this database. The main objective of this study is to generate a PCM database and draw on it in order to facilitate the selection of the most suitable PCM depending on the building application.The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Commission Seventh Framework Programme (FP/ 2007-2013) under grant agreement no.     Drought and Forest Decline in the Iberian Peninsula: A Simple Explanation for a Complex Phenomenom?

    Different episodes of forest decline have been reported in several areas of the Northern Hemisphere during the 20th century. The explanation of this process included anthropogenic (air pollution), biotic (pathogens) and climatic factors. Among the climatic factors, the effects of acute or chronic droughts have been the most common explanation for the massive dieback observed. In the Iberian Peninsula, besides the pathogenic explanation which gives a paramount relevance to the fungus Phytophtora cinnamomi in many situations, the role of an increment in aridity (chronic) or the consequences of severe droughts (acute) have been empirically supported. The evident synchronism between forest decline and abnormally adverse climatic conditions, in addition to the reversibility of the process when precipitation intensity increased, are two major arguments for supporting the climatic involvement in the phenomenon. Nevertheless, the two most affected species in the episodes of oak decline in the Iberian Peninsula were Quercus ilex and Q. suber, which are representatives of the so called Mediterranean woody flora and which have been considered as more drought resistant than the temperate oak species that co-occur in this territory. The climatic complexity ofthe Iberian Peninsula, the many mechanisms for coping with water stress that have been described within the sclerophyllous Mediterranean flora and the effects of human management partially explain this paradox. Other forest species have also been affected by massive decline. Pinus sylvestris and Abies alba, which have their southern distribution limit in the mountain ranges of the Iberian Peninsula, are two examples of this situation. Both cases, besides the inmediate effects of some climatic perturbations, need the incorporation of different predisposing factors – mainly historical aspects to obtain a complete image of the process

    Critical properties of the four-state Commutative Random Permutation Glassy Potts model in three and four dimensions

    We investigate the critical properties of the four-state commutative random permutation glassy Potts model in three and four dimensions by means of Monte Carlo simulation and of a finite size scaling analysis. Thanks to the use of a field programmable gate array we have been able to thermalize a large number of samples of systems with large volume. This has allowed us to observe a spin-glass ordered phase in d=4 and to study the critical properties of the transition. In d=3, our results are consistent with the presence of a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, but we cannot exclude transient effects due to a value of the lower critical dimension slightly below 3.Comment: 9 pages, 8 Postscript figure

    El osteosarcoma perióstico es un sarcoma raro que asienta en la superficie del hueso. Aunque algunos autores lo incluyen en los osteosarcomas yuxtacorticales sus peculiaridades clínicas, radiológicas y anatomopatológicas entre ellos que llevan a diferencias en el tratamiento y pronóstico le otorgan personalidad propia. Presentamos un caso clínico de osteosarcoma perióstico en un varón de 18 años, a nivel de fémur. Se realiza una revisión de la bibliografía, señalando las principales características de esta entidad.Periosteal osteosarcoma is a rare malignant neoplasm located on bone surface. Although some authors include it among juxtacortical osteosarcoma, its clinical feature, imaging studies findings and histologic patterns which lead to differences in the treatment and prognostic, give to it a peculiar identity.
