Geography in university academic degrees in Spain: teaching and curricula

    Get PDF
The adaptation of the Spanish university system to the European Higher Education Area [EHEA] has led to the reorganization of the higher education system in Spain. In this context, the article discusses the existence of Geography in the different curricula of academic degrees, in Geography degrees and Land-Use Planning degrees, as the most common denominator, and in other academic degrees of the different branches of knowledge in which the main fields of study are grouped: Arts and Humanities, Social and Legal Sciences, Sciences and Engineering and Architecture. Due to the long well-established relationship, a special mention should be made to the teaching of Geography in the Teacher Training Schools, which are now Education Faculties

Representational task formats and problem solving strategies in kinematics and work

Previous studies have reported that students employed different problem solving approaches when presented with the same task structured with different representations. In this study, we explored and compared students’ strategies as they attempted tasks from two topical areas, kinematics and work. Our participants were 19 engineering students taking a calculus-based physics course. The tasks were presented in linguistic, graphical, and symbolic forms and requested either a qualitative solution or a value. The analysis was both qualitative and quantitative in nature focusing principally on the characteristics of the strategies employed as well as the underlying reasoning for their applications. A comparison was also made for the same student’s approach with the same kind of representation across the two topics. Additionally, the participants’ overall strategies across the different tasks, in each topic, were considered. On the whole, we found that the students prefer manipulating equations irrespective of the representational format of the task. They rarely recognized the applicability of a ‘‘qualitative’’ approach to solve the problem although they were aware of the concepts involved. Even when the students included visual representations in their solutions, they seldom used these representations in conjunction with the mathematical part of the problem. Additionally, the students were not consistent in their approach for interpreting and solving problems with the same kind of representation across the two topical areas. The representational format, level of prior knowledge, and familiarity with a topic appeared to influence their strategies, their written responses, and their ability to recognize qualitative ways to attempt a problem. The nature of the solution does not seem to impact the strategies employed to handle the problem

An Illustrated Methodology for Evaluating ASR Systems

Proceeding of: 9th International Workshop on Adaptive Multimedia Retrieval (AMR 2011) Took place 2011, July, 18-19, in Barcelona, Spain. The event Web site is http://stel.ub.edu/amr2011/Automatic speech recognition technology can be integrated in an information retrieval process to allow searching on multimedia contents. But, in order to assure an adequate retrieval performance is necessary to state the quality of the recognition phase, especially in speaker-independent and domainindependent environments. This paper introduces a methodology to accomplish the evaluation of different speech recognition systems in several scenarios considering also the creation of new corpora of different types (broadcast news, interviews, etc.), especially in other languages apart from English that are not widely addressed in speech community. This work has been partially supported by the Spanish Center for Industry Technological Development (CDTI, Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade), through the BUSCAMEDIA Project (CEN-20091026). And also by MA2VICMR: Improving the access, analysis and visibility of the multilingual and multimedia information in web for the Region of Madrid (S2009/TIC-1542).Publicad

A multi-resolution and multivariate analysis of the dynamic relationships between crude oil and petroleum-product prices

This paper proposes the use of a novel multivariate, dynamic approach wavelet local multiple correlation (WLMC) (Fernández-Macho, 2018) to analyse the relationship between oil time series in the time-scale domain. This approach is suitable for use with energy data of any kind that change over time and involve heterogeneous agents who make decisions across different time horizons and operate on different time scales. The study of the links between multivariate oil time series is of great importance in energy research, e.g., it is extremely important for petroleum industry refiners and investors to know the relationships and margins between output prices and crude oil costs. The estimation of wavelet correlations in a multivariate framework between such prices is a suitable way to analyse crude oil and petroleum products as a system. To exemplify the use of WLMC, we analyse the relationships between the prices of seven commodities: West Texas Intermediate crude oil and six distilled products (conventional gasoline, regular gasoline, heating oil, diesel fuel, kerosene and propane) from 10/06/2006 to 17/01/2017. The results reveal that the wavelet correlations are strong throughout the period studied and there is a strong decay in correlation values from 2013 to 2015. The most plausible explanation for this decay is overproduction of tight oil in the U.S. and a slowdown in global demand for oil. Furthermore, our results also reveal that heating oil, diesel and kerosene maximise the multiple correlation with respect to the other oil variables on different scales, indicating that these products are the most dependent variables in the crude-product/price system. WLMC offers new opportunities for applications in energy research and other fields. © 2018 Elsevier Lt
